Being a vegetarian in a strictly meat-eating country such as Colombia can be extremely difficult. Especially since eating generous helpings of meat is pretty much one of Colombia’s favourite past-times and an almost compulsory part of Colombian food. But if you are a vego and want a daily dose of greens while living or travelling in Colombia, then here are some delicious places you should visit.
Maha Veg

This place has got to be one of my personal favourites. They have the most delicious smoothies I have ever tasted in Colombia (and that really is saying something) and make use of so-called “super food” ingredients (are we the only ones imagining an apple in a cape?) including macca and spirulina. This restaurant has been serving up healthy vegetarian and vegan food since 2008 and is a must-visit spot for any vegetarians despairing at the shocking lack of vegetables involved in most Colombian food. Head over for their lunch special which includes soup, a main dish, dessert and juice for around $8,000. Nice. And, as if delicious vego food wasn’t enough, they also give yoga and meditation classes upstairs. Can’t get much healthier than that.

Pita Wok

Not just for vegetarians, Pita Wok Specialises in Middle-Eastern inspired food, with plenty of tasty vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. While I am perhaps not the world’s greatest fan (my picky Arab tastebuds are rarely satisfied by Arabic food in Colombia), there is no denying that the ingredients are fresh, the spices are original and, well, I can’t argue with Pita Wok’s loyal regulars. Try the Mixto Vegeteriano, a plate full of salad, rice, falafel, tofu and tahini – all for $8,500. The limonada con hierbabuena is delicious too!

Casita hOMe Yoga

Ok, while this is not techinally a restaurant or even a café, Casitah hOMe Yoga has the tastiest vegan cake anywhere in Bogotá. This beautiful yoga space in Chapinero was set up by gorgeous yogis Zarah and Diego who teach classes from their own home. After an intimate and spiritual yoga class, get your hands on some delicious vegan cake for just $5,000. The perfect way to end a class and start the rest of your day.

Clearly, there is more to Colombian food than just chicken, chicharrón and chorizo – you just have to search a little harder for it. There are plenty more vegetarian restaurants opening all the time in Bogotá, so keep your eyes peeled for some healthy vegetable goodness. For more vegetarian options, check out this site.
