"Miradas": Photos of Colombia's Chocó by Stephanie Ascanio

Stephanie Ascanio is a Colombian photographer interested in documenting the daily life of urban spaces that surround her. Throughout her career she has created various photographic series. Many of them have led to exhibitions. One of her favorites is “Perspectives”, the photographic series of a job that lasted several months in Chocó and had as it’s theme portraits of Afro-Colombians in the region. Ascanio identified with “Perspectives”, the beginning of her style as a photographer and her interest in portraying the everyday. She then traveled to Mexico where she found in the colors and textures of the cities, strong cultural traditions. She currently runs her own commercial photography business and continues to manage her own artistic projects.

Stephanie Ascanio es una fotógrafa colombiana interesada en documentar la cotidianidad de los espacios urbanos que la rodean. A lo largo de su trayectoria ha realizado diversas series fotográficas. Muchas de ellas, han motivado exposiciones. Una de sus favoritas es “Miradas”, la compilación de un trabajo que se extendió durante varios meses en el departamento del Chocó y tuvo como temática el retrato de afrocolombianos de la región. Ascanio identifica con “Miradas”, el inicio de su estilo como fotógrafa y de su interés por retratar lo cotidiano. Posteriormente, viajó a México en donde encontró dentro de los colores y las texturas de las ciudades, fuertes tradiciones culturales. Actualmente dirige su propia empresa de fotografía comercial y continúa gestionando sus propios proyectos artísticos.

“Perspectives” is a photographic series from the Colombian Pacific region, seeking to capture the charisma, sense and soul of it’s inhabitants, the region’s most precious resource. From the early sixteenth century, African slaves who arrived in what is now Colombia began to mix with the indigenous, Spanish and Creole people to define what is a great part of the Colombian ethnic identity. However, for centuries their important cultural role in what we define today as Colombia has been refuted and misjudged. The truth is that this legacy is undeniable. This photographic work brings to life the Pacific region through faces and eyes that serve as proof of the powerful visual identity of the Afro-Colombian population in this region. The portraits are accompanied by texts of Afro-Colombian poetry.

“Miradas” es una serie de fotografías que fueron realizadas en el Pacífico Colombiano, buscando plasmar el carisma, el sentir y el alma de sus habitantes, el recurso más preciado de la región. Desde principios del siglo XVI, los esclavos africanos que llegaron a lo que actualmente es el país, comenzaron a mezclarse con los indígenas, españoles y criollos para definir lo que es buena parte de la identidad étnica colombiana. Sin embargo, durante siglos se ha negado y juzgado equivocadamente su importante papel cultural de lo que hoy definimos como Colombia. Lo cierto es que su legado es indudable. Este trabajo fotográfico se aproxima a la vida en el pacífico por medio de rostros y miradas que sirven como prueba visual de la poderosa identidad de la población Afrocolombiana de esta región. Los retratos van acompañados de textos de poesía Afrocolombiana.
