You’ve probably heard of the Tomatina Festival in Buñol, Spain, before. It’s kind of a big deal. It’s that festival where a crowd of people systematically turn themselves into a giant tomatoey pizza (although not a Colombian pizza, which remain suspiciously tomato-free). It’s basically an excuse to chuck food around and not get in trouble for it. And who hasn’t dreamed about that at least once…?
Well, anything Spain can do, so can Colombia! This weekend (and Monday…it’s a holiday after all) sees the Colombian version of La Tomatina return to the pretty Boyaca pueblo of Sutamarchán. This festival has been held annually since 2004 (we even wrote a post about it in 2012…see), and 2014 will be the biggest incarnation of La Tomatina yet.
It’ll be a great, and pretty unusual, weekend: booze and food-fights by day, music and dancing (and more booze) by night. What’s not to like?
You can get to Sutamarchán really easily from Bogota using public transport. It’s conveniently located about 4 hours from the capital, and near to Tunja and Villa de Leyva if you fancy taking in some more beautiful Boyaca towns over the same weekend. Just remember to wash off the tomato smell first…
