For many people, Colombia is the first place they come to having done a trip through Central America. I meet many people who have done this (and many people who have subsequently decided to stay in Colombia, but that’s a different story) and I also hear from many people wondering how to do it.

The worst way and a way you absolutely shouldn’t consider is by land! Looking at the map of America you might be tempted into thinking the trip across the continent would be amazing and relatively easy. Amazing, yes, but easy no. The stretch between Panama and Colombia is one of the most dangerous places on earth and should be avoided at all costs.

Instead, go by boat. This involves charting a sailboat via Panama’s San Blas islands before landing in the beautiful, enchanting city of Cartagena. Finding a boat isn’t hard since several run the route and are open and willing to help backpackers (in exchange for a little money, of course!). Additionally, if you’re staying in a hostel they will undoubtedly be in contact with someone who can take you.
The boat will sail past (and stop on) some incredible islands, most almost empty aside from coral, palm trees and golden sands. You’ll spend around 3 days (depending on the boat) relaxing in the islands as the crew do… whatever it is they do. You can catch up on the sun, read, relax and reflect.

After this the boat will set sail again, this time for Cartagena where your journey ends. All in all the journey should take around 5 days, and should cost around $400. Cartagena is a beautiful, enchanting city and the perfect introduction to Colombia’s colorful culture. Enjoy!
