Colombia 2 – 0 Bolivia, vamos!

Colombia continue to impress in the 2011 Copa América, having progressed from the group stages with a 2-0 victory over Bolivia. The victory sends them through on top of their group with 7 points from their 3 fixtures, topping tournament favorites Argentina.

Radamel Falcao celebrates his opening goal against Bolivia

Colombia were fancied to progress having drawn Bolivia and an under-par Costa Rica in their group, but the real shock of the group has been Argentina’s continued underperforming. The hosts will play Costa Rica later today and, if they fail to win, could be knocked out in the opening stages.

As for Colombia, robust performances in their first two matches made them favourites to progress and their performance against Bolivia has impressed critics, especially the performance of Radamel Falcao, who is said to be a target for London club Chelsea.

The beginning of the match saw little in the way of chances, with both teams seemingly more content to try to hold possession and defend. As the match continued, however, Colombia became more and more dominant, and finally broke the deadlock when Dayro Moreno slotted an inch-perfect through ball to Falcao, who remained composed and slotted the ball away coolly.

This left Bolivia’s chances of progressing in tatters and their anxieties reached a head in the 26th minute when Pablo Armero was brought down by Santos Amador with a rash tackle for a clear penalty. Falcao stepped up and placed the ball calmly in the centre of the goal.

Falcao also carved a couple more chances for himself with inventive runs, but couldn’t find the final touch to complete his hatrick. Nonetheless, his performance and the performance of Colombia as a whole did enough to impress, and give the Colombian fans even more hope that their team are capable of even more in the tournament.

Tonight Argentina face Costa Rica to decide who else will progress from the group.

Exactly. Colombia all the way… But Uruguay a more realistic bet, Ryan and I agree.
