Colombia World Cup 2011: Cali

Today in our Colombia Travel Blog we’re beginning our countdown to the U20s FIFA World Cup which begins on the 29th of July in Medellín when England takes on Korea. We’re going to be focusing on the cities in which the tournament will be taking place in order to help you get the most out of the Colombia World Cup and your time in Colombia, if you’re lucky enough to be joining the fiesta. First up, Cali.

The Cristo Rey spectacularly lit up

Cali is properly know as Santiago de Cali and is the capital of the Calle del Cauca department. It’s Colombia’s third largest city, cheekily referred to by residents the country’s capital of salsa.

Cali also has the distinction of being Colombia’s sporting capital, since it boasts the best infrastructure for sports and has hostel many international sporting events.

Those heading to the World Cup in Cali can expect to find themselves in a very green, very warm city where salsa dominates both day and night. Caleños are notoriously warm, kind people and will undoubtedly extend an unforgettable welcome to all who travel to their city. So long as you’re prepared to dance…

Both America de Cali and Deportivo Cali, the cities teams, are successful in Colombian football, with America de Cali one of the two most decorated teams in the country (along with Bogotá’s Millionarios). The city is crazy about football and the tournament will be passionately followed all around the city.

If you’re heading to the World Cup in Cali you’ll find your best slice of nightlife along the Avenida Sexta, also known as ‘Party Street’. For a quieter night, you could try Bourbon Street (Calle 17N 8N-45), which is popular with expats. For a nice lunch, try Baharoque (Calle 2 No. 4-23), where you’ll find a nice atmosphere and a cheap, filling meal awaits you.

If you’re visiting Cali, we strongly recommend a visit to the Calima Lake, an impressive artificial lake located about an hour from the city.

Cali will host Uruguay, New Zealand, Portugal and Cameroon in the opening stages of the tournament as well as a 2nd round game and a quarter final.
