My first trip was when I was 15 months old. During 90 days I toured Europe with my parents, I think it was at that moment when the passion for traveling awoke in me.
Then came vacations in different places… my parents and I share that constant desire for adventure and different cultures, so I was able to visit various paradises. But for some reason it was Brazil that always attracted me mysteriously; their culture, their joy, their different colors and “sotaques”. I think that’s why, after finishing my career in advertising, even knowing it was not just working as an advertiser what filled me completely, I packed my bags and went to Brazil. What was supposed to be a month became my life. Six years later I decided, finally, to return to the country where I was born and make a “normal life”.
But my adventurous spirit was not satisfied, and so I started working in cruise ships. Working on a cruise has, like everything, its pros and cons. Life is, if I may use that word, “hard”. Working hours are long, the sea is not always as quiet as the one on “Love Boat”, and it’s really not usual in a “normal life” to make drills 2 or 3 times a week to learn what to do in case you have to go to the lifeboats or if your “home” is going to catch on fire! The pay is very good, which makes it very tempting. Here are the pros. It is very interesting and fun, of course, going to sleep in Spain and waking up in France for example, all this without ever having moved from your room/cabin. It is great wonder around, in these small doses of time (often not too many hours in each port) interesting streets, learn a lot, get to really know the region.
However, I think that the best thing are the friends you make, it´s a little corny but, they become your family. Friends to whom sometimes, you have to say goodbye sooner than you wanted, because the turnover is constant, but there will come others from which you will also learn. Some of these will be for life. It’s those friends with the ones you that create strong ties, authentic ties. Ties sometimes also based on that same passion for travel and adventure. Ties created by shared moments, some hilarious, others difficult.
Of course I should also say to the one that decides to engage in this lifestyle, that you will get up one day to go to work and you´ll be back home after 6 months. Of course, you will also miss a lot of things: weddings, birthdays, births… you lose those small daily happenings. But back to what I was saying about the ties. When the bonds are strong and love is big, nothing is lost, on the contrary, it`s enriched. You will return with thousands of pictures and stories to tell and share.
