{"id":9416,"date":"2013-08-06T11:35:38","date_gmt":"2013-08-06T16:35:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/?p=9416"},"modified":"2016-05-04T16:42:55","modified_gmt":"2016-05-04T21:42:55","slug":"the-trendy-travellers-guide-to-colombian-fusion-music-guest-post","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/08\/the-trendy-travellers-guide-to-colombian-fusion-music-guest-post\/","title":{"rendered":"The Trendy Traveller&#8217;s Guide to Colombian Fusion Music (Guest Post)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The musical tapestry of Colombia is an incredibly rich and diverse one \u2013 reflective of the diverse cultures and peoples of Colombia. <strong>It is one of the many things I love about Colombia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>That tapestry is much more diverse than most people know about.<\/p>\n<h3>New forms of Colombian music<\/h3>\n<p>Traditional forms of Colombian music, or the more popular mainstream ones, are well-known throughout the world:\u00a0\u00a0Salsa \u2013 Merengue \u2013 Cumbia \u2013 Vallenato &#8211; Reggaeton.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>There is also a long list of lesser known <a title=\"From the Archives \u2013 A Brief Introduction to Colombian Music: From Champeta to Cumbia\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/02\/from-the-archives-a-brief-introduction-to-colombian-music-from-champeta-to-cumbia\/\" target=\"_blank\">traditional Colombian music genres<\/a><\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a0Porro \u2013 Palenque \u2013 Champeta \u2013 Currulao \u2013Merecumbe.\u00a0\u00a0You will find all of those styles of music and more in Colombia \u2013 made and played by incredible artists.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>I love it all.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Colombian rock music, metal music, jazz music, reggae music, electronic music and more, can also be found.<\/p>\n<p>Importantly, what you will also find in Colombia (but just need to know to look) is <strong>contemporary Colombian music<\/strong> that doesn\u2019t fit into any of those neat musical genre boxes&#8230;Music with different flavours that combines a bit of this genre with a bit of that genre.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GUce8hNtO4s\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center>There are many <strong>Colombian bands creating really fantastic and unique music<\/strong> by mixing traditional forms of Colombian music with jazz, funk, soul, drum and bass, reggae, dub, hip hop and electronic music.\u00a0\u00a0I call it Colombian \u2018fusion music\u2019 \u2013 and it is an alternative music scene to popular mainstream Colombian music.<\/p>\n<h3>Love affair with the music of Colombia<\/h3>\n<p>When I first came to Colombia in 2007, I found what are now the better known Colombian fusion bands:\u00a0\u00a0Bomba Estereo \u2013 Sidestepper &#8211; Systema Solar &#8211; and Choc Quib Town.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>I fell in love with the unique and interesting sounds in the music<\/strong> they were making, and wanted more of it.<\/p>\n<p>I have been searching for, and finding other Colombian fusion music ever since.<\/p>\n<p>I buy some Colombian music CD\u2019s that I hear about on-line, from my home base in Australia. Better than that though, is going to the right music stores whenever I visit Colombia \u2013 and getting <strong>a bag of Colombian musical goodies to take home with me.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Where to find the latest Colombian bands<\/h3>\n<p><strong>The best music store I have found in Colombia<\/strong> for buying Colombian fusion music is <strong>Musiteca in Bogota (Cra 8, # 18-81, Local 203)<\/strong>.\u00a0Musiteca has the biggest selection of Colombian bands \u2013 lots of fusion music \u2013 and independent music direct from the artist to the store, so you might not find it anywhere else.\u00a0\u00a0Go in and tell the owner Cesar what types of music you like, and he will give you a pile of CD\u2019s to listen to.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Live music shows are the ultimate musical experience for me though<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0When I come to Colombia, and anywhere else in the world I go, I look for those live experiences.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/omDyhLL4C5o\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center>There are lots of live fusion music gigs to be found in Colombia\u2013 at bars, cultural spaces and the many Colombian festivals throughout the year.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Most Colombian fusion bands are based in Bogota, but you will also find them in most other Colombian cities.<\/p>\n<p>The bigger and more obvious places to look for fusion music bands are at festivals like <strong>Rock al Parque, Hip Hop al Parque, and Festival Centro.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are a few bars in Bogota that support original music and have very regular live gigs \u2013 Latino Power Bar (Calle 58 # 13 -88\u00a0); \u00a0<a title=\"5 Nightspots You Have to Visit in Bogot\u00e1 Before You Leave\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/07\/5-nightspots-you-have-to-visit-in-bogota-before-you-leave\/\" target=\"_blank\">A Seis Manos (Calle 22 # 8-60)<\/a>; and <a title=\"What\u2019s On in Bogot\u00e1: Wednesday Night at Quiebracanto\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2011\/06\/whats-on-in-bogota-wednesday-night-at-quiebracanto\/\" target=\"_blank\">Quibra Canto (Carrera 5 # 17-76)<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0There are bigger venues like El Teatro Metro en El Centro. Also check the program for regular concerts at la Fundacion Gilberto Alzate Avendano.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In Medellin keep an eye out for the weekly gigs at 3 Cordilleras<\/strong>. If you\u2019re in town when la Feria de Las Flores is on in August, make sure you check out Parque Cultural Nocturno where you will generally always find some contemporary Colombian fusion music.<\/p>\n<h3>Go ahead &#8211; have a listen<\/h3>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CASTs396ikY\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center><strong>Colombian fusion music is awesome and unique<\/strong>.
