Guest Post by Matthias Scherer\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/01\/tourist-in-bogota-going-back-to-the-country-of-my-birth-guest-post-by-matthias-scherer\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bogot\u00e1<\/a> and is 200 metres underground. Just hearing that, as we walked into the cavernous tunnel made me sweat.<\/p>\n<p>The cathedral was carved out of the mountain in the 1930s by the miners working in the area as a sanctuary and a place of prayer. It was then later refurbished and restructured into the Cathedral it is today.<\/p>\n<p>In <a title=\"500 Reasons We Love Colombia (Our 500th Post!)\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/02\/500-reasons-we-love-colombia-our-500th-post\/\" target=\"_blank\">Colombia<\/a>, La Catedral de Sal is a place of pilgrimage. The busiest day of the year is <a title=\"Semana Santa In Colombia: What We\u2019ll Be Doing\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2012\/04\/semana-santa-in-colombia-what-well-be-doing\/\" target=\"_blank\">Easter<\/a> but every day, especially Sundays, the cathedral is filled with thousands of visitors from around the country and the world. I headed along on a Sunday and it was busy &#8211; go early if you pay a visit!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6861\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6861\" style=\"width: 362px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/02\/licking-walls-and-talking-to-god-la-catedral-de-sal-zipaquira\/2012-11-11-11-51-05\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6861\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6861\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/2012-11-11-11.51.05-e1361200716112.jpg\" alt=\"La Catedral de Sal, Zipaquira\" width=\"362\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6861\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">La Catedral de Sal, Zipaquira<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>An illuminated pathway guided the way through the underground holy space and stations of the cross, each designed by different artists, point us in the right direction.\u00a0I don&#8217;t know if it was the darkness, the large amount of people, the memorial for killed miners or the large glowing crosses that did it, but walking through this dimly-lit underground sacred area is pretty unnerving. I just wanted to sit in the pews gazing at the salty ceiling.<\/p>\n<p>And yes, given it is a salt mine everything is pretty much carved out of salt. I may have licked the wall just to make sure.<\/p>\n<p>The town of Zapiqu\u00edra is also a gorgeous town the spend the day walking around.
