You\u2019d think I might take it as an insult, but actually it seemed like a pretty good idea at the time.\u00a0I was in Tena, just out of La Mesa, about 60km from Bogot\u00e1, and I was spending the day hiking, abseiling, rock-hopping and swimming with a group of friends.<\/p>\n<p>We were in search of a waterfall in the area and our friend Hector, who\u2019s an outdoor education teacher in Bogot\u00e1, said he knew how to get there and that there were great places to do some abseiling along the way. Since we were keen to escape the city for the weekend, we\u2019d packed our bags, loaded our tents into the car and off we went in search of a waterfall and a slower pace.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4892\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4892\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/SanAntonio1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4892\" title=\"Driving through Tena\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/SanAntonio1.jpg\" alt=\"Driving through Tena\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/SanAntonio1.jpg 700w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/SanAntonio1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4892\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Driving through Tena<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As we drove down a dirt road and past the only tienda we had seen for kilometres, we came to a bridge. <em>The waterfall is that way<\/em>, Hector said pointing at the riverbed bellow.\u00a0We strapped on our abseiling gear, harnesses and helmets and jumped from the bridge, lowering ourselves down onto the rocks.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4894\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4894\" style=\"width: 525px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/SanAntonio3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4894\" title=\"Taking a peek over the edge\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/SanAntonio3.jpg\" alt=\"Taking a peek over the edge\" width=\"525\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/SanAntonio3.jpg 525w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/SanAntonio3-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4894\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Taking a peek over the edge<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Now, when people talk about taking the path less travelled, I am pretty sure this is what they meant. We weren\u2019t on a path, we were making our own and the locals were coming out of their homes to check out what on earth we were doing.<\/p>\n<p>Once all 7 of us made it down, we meandered along the creek bed, climbing the large rocks with careful footing and an adventurer\u2019s pace.<\/p>\n<p>As we climbed out of the river and through the scrub that surrounded us, the handsome cliffs of Tena closed in and shadowed us with their enormity.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4896\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4896\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/SanAntonio5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4896\" title=\"The spectacular cliffs\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/SanAntonio5.jpg\" alt=\"The spectacular cliffs\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/SanAntonio5.jpg 700w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/SanAntonio5-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4896\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The spectacular cliffs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Over some rocky terrain, down a hill and past a couple of cows, we found the waterfall. And it was spectacular. The sound it made as the water splashed off the surface of the rocks, the feel of it on our skin.
