Here&#8217;s my take on Bogot\u00e1&#8217;s oldest barrio.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You know you\u2019re living in La Candelaria when you have to quickly cross the road to get out of the way of a pack of llamas walking towards you. But it takes a while.<\/p>\n<p>After my first <a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/tour\/bogota-short-breaks\/\" target=\"_blank\">tour of La Candelaria<\/a>, I knew this was the place for me. The cobbled streets, the brightly coloured buildings, the small, dimly-lit restaurants and cafes, the students walking around talking about something that sounded interesting but that I couldn\u2019t really understand. Yep, La Candelaria, I am going to make you home, is what I thought.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4773\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4773\" style=\"width: 653px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Candelaria-3-Sarah-Duncan.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4773\" title=\"Bogot\u00e1's Historical City Centre La Candelaria \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Candelaria-3-Sarah-Duncan.png\" alt=\"Bogot\u00e1's Historical City Centre La Candelaria\" width=\"653\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Candelaria-3-Sarah-Duncan.png 653w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Candelaria-3-Sarah-Duncan-300x185.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 653px) 100vw, 653px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4773\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bogot\u00e1&#8217;s Historical City Centre La Candelaria<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>La Candelaria is the oldest barrio in Bogot\u00e1 \u2013 it\u2019s where it all started way back in 1538. There are centuries-old churches on street corners, old colonial-style houses with opened doors to sneak a peek through, dark narrow walkways where lovers canoodle and buildings steeped in history and nostalgia for another time.<\/p>\n<p>But how do you go about finding a place to live around here? Well, when in doubt \u2013 Google. After visiting seven different apartment blocks, share houses, and even share rooms in family homes, my two friends and I decided on the first place we saw \u2013 an old home on a quiet street on the not so touristy side of the barrio.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4772\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4772\" style=\"width: 661px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Candelaria-2-Sarah-Duncan.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4772\" title=\"Colonial Building in La Candelaria\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Candelaria-2-Sarah-Duncan.png\" alt=\"Colonial Building in La Candelaria\" width=\"661\" height=\"409\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Candelaria-2-Sarah-Duncan.png 661w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Candelaria-2-Sarah-Duncan-300x185.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 661px) 100vw, 661px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4772\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Colonial Building in La Candelaria<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Here, there aren\u2019t so many restaurants and students \u2013 more families and small tiendas. And I love it that way. But one word of warning, before moving into a new place, always, always ask if there is hot water, or you might have to schedule visits to the local gym to use their showers, not that I would do that.<\/p>\n<p>There might be a lack of hot water, but what there is not a lack of in La Candelaria are great places to eat.
