Ants & Refajo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Thank God it\u2019s Friday! And to celebrate (and really slow us down before we play football this afternoon), Paul and I have decided to introduce to you some of the weird and wonderful \u2018delicacies\u2019 which Colombians keep telling us we must<\/em> try. However, we\u2019re honest guys, so instead of just writing a casual introduction to all of these wondrous taste sensations we\u2019re actually going out into Bogota to find them and taste them for ourselves.<\/p>\n

So, here are our thoughts on some of Colombia\u2019s more acquired tastes\u2026<\/p>\n

\"'Get<\/a>
‘Get it down, son!’<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Refajo: 50\/50 mix between Aguila beer and Colombiana soda\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n

What the Colombians say: <\/strong>German: \u201cRefajo without the Colombiana just isn\u2019t refajo <\/em>[Editor: Makes sense\u2026]. Refajo is the best drink to accompany a good Sunday barbeque.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n

Paul: <\/strong>This a bit like a shandy\u2026<\/p>\n

Chris: <\/strong>But not really\u2026.<\/p>\n

Paul<\/strong>: I can imagine enjoying this on a paseo <\/em>to somewhere hot.<\/p>\n

Chris<\/strong>: Or in a British beer garden\u2026I could see it catching on. I\u2019d have to agree with German about the BBQ thing\u2026<\/p>\n

Chris’ turn<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Paul<\/strong>: It\u2019s actually pretty good\u2026I\u2019m enjoying it.<\/p>\n

Chris<\/strong>: It\u2019s a bit like Irn Bru, but alcoholic\u2026.Scottish market perhaps?<\/p>\n

Paul: <\/strong>Still, I\u2019ll be having this again.<\/p>\n

Hot Chocolate and Cheese: A mug of steaming hot chocolate with a big lump of white cheese in it\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Anticipation…<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

What the Colombians say: <\/strong>Lucia:\u201cIt\u2019s great to get rid of the cold. It\u2019s the perfect combination for either breakfast or at night. And there\u2019s nothing better if you visit Bogota than to enjoy it in the Pasteleria La Florida, which has the best Santafere\u00f1o chocolate in the city.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Chris: <\/strong>You know, I really like this. I honestly didn\u2019t think I would, but it works\u2026<\/p>\n

Paul: <\/strong>What, no way?! These are two things that should never be mixed!<\/p>\n

\"Dubious...\"<\/a>
Dubious…<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Chris: <\/strong>I agree in theory, but it actually tastes good.<\/p>\n

Paul: <\/strong>I\u2019m not convinced\u2026The cheese melts into a gooey mess, and now my formerly delicious hot chocolate has bits in it.<\/p>\n

Chris: <\/strong>Best of both worlds mate!<\/p>\n

De Todito: Like a greatest hits collection but with crisps. One bag, 4 kinds of crisp!<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Perfect bar snack…<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

What the Colombians say: <\/strong>Leidy:<\/em>\u201cThe best flavours of Colombia in one packet. Delicious!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Paul: <\/strong>Awesome. Really, really awesome. Now this is what I\u2019m talking about. The only way this could be better is if it has Chipsticks in it\u2026<\/p>\n

Chris: <\/strong>Or Space Invaders, but the Bacon Fries are a nice addition.<\/p>\n

Paul: <\/strong>For those reading this blog travelling to Colombia, I can\u2019t recommend this snack highly enough. In fact, I\u2019m thinking about becoming rich back home by exporting it.<\/p>\n

Lovin’ it<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Chris: <\/strong>I\u2019m in [in a Duncan Bannatyne voice]<\/em>. But do you think the British public could handle such a profusion of deliciousness?<\/p>\n

Paul: <\/strong>In one word: Yes, definitely!<\/p>\n

Chris<\/strong>: This is so much better than a standard multipack…all in one is definitely the way forward!<\/p>\n

Paul<\/strong>: Frazzles are back in my life…<\/p>\n

Ice Cream and Cheese \u2013 Yes you heard correctly!<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n

What the Colombians say: <\/strong>Jhon: “Que rico! I’m not sure if foreigners will like it, but it’s my favourite.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Before the anger started…<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Chris: <\/strong>I could handle the hot chocolate, but this is just too much!<\/p>\n

Paul: <\/strong>It\u2019s an abomination!<\/p>\n

Chris: <\/strong>Are we going to offend people with this post?<\/p>\n

Paul: <\/strong>They\u2019ve already offended me with their bizarre flavour combinations.<\/p>\n

Chris & Paul: <\/strong>[Laughing]<\/em><\/p>\n

Not happy…<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Chris: <\/strong>Say no more. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Paul: <\/strong>No wait. It\u2019s interesting and I guess you could get used to it, but really this isn\u2019t my cup of tea\u2026I\u2019m just gonna scrape the cheese off and eat the ice cream.<\/p>\n

Hormigas Culonas: Literally \u2018Big Bottomed Ants\u2019. Served whole and fried. It\u2019s getting intense! <\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n

What the Colombians say: <\/strong>Valentina: \u201cIf you\u2019re going to call yourself a traveller then you have to try these. They are a delicacy in Santander.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

There’s no way I’m eating all of these…<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Paul: <\/strong>I\u2019m dubious Chris, I\u2019m really dubious.<\/p>\n

Chris: <\/strong>Me too Paul, me too.<\/p>\n

Paul: <\/strong>Do you want to go first?<\/p>\n

Really unsure…<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Chris: <\/strong>Not really. Same time?<\/p>\n

Silence. Intense stares. Finally, on the count of 3 both of us reluctantly crunch down an ant.<\/em><\/p>\n

Paul: <\/strong>Hmmm\u2026not\u2026bad\u2026<\/p>\n

Chris: <\/strong>I can\u2019t really decide what they taste of\u2026but it\u2019s not actually unpleasant\u2026a bit like bacon<\/p>\n

Paul: <\/strong>If I focus on the flavour they\u2019re quite enjoyable, but I can\u2019t get the image of Flik from \u2018A Bug\u2019s Life\u2019 out of my head\u2026plus I\u2019ve got bits of ant stuck in my teeth\u2026<\/p>\n

Chris: <\/strong>Pint?<\/p>\n

Paul: <\/strong>Or\u2026refajo?<\/p>\n

It’s just like the pub…sort of<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

And so our story ends, like so many have back home: in a pub (except it\u2019s a tienda<\/em>), with a pint (but not really), and some salty bar snacks (but they\u2019re ants). It\u2019s happened\u2026we\u2019ve gone native.<\/p>\n
