If Medell\u00edn had its way, however, that would all change.<\/p>\n<p>Tango has always been popular in the &#8216;City of Eternal Spring&#8217;, however its iconic status in the city was cemented in 1935 when, in a plane crash in Medell\u00edn, Carlos Gardel died.\u00a0Among the rumours and\u00a0controversy\u00a0about where he was born (France, Argentina, Uruguay or even Colombia), the fact that he died in Medell\u00edn is crucial to locals. This gives them reason to celebrate his life, and the life of tango, and gives a certain amount of legitimacy to Medell\u00edn being claimed by some as the &#8216;Tango Capital of the World&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Buenos Aires, we&#8217;re sure, begs to differ.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3226\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3226\" style=\"width: 504px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/tango.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-3226 \" title=\"Tango on the streets of Buenos Aires\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/tango.jpg\" alt=\"Tango on the streets of Buenos Aires\" width=\"504\" height=\"365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/tango.jpg 720w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/tango-300x217.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3226\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tango on the streets of Buenos Aires<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Nonetheless, it&#8217;s true to say that in Medell\u00edn you&#8217;ll hear a great deal of tango. Among the usual fixtures of Colombian radio, tango has found a way into the playlists. Not only that, but the city is home to many famous tango clubs which are famous for their strong traditions and dedication to the tango tradition.<\/p>\n<p>One such club, and perhaps the most famous, is Salon Malaga. Open since 1957, it&#8217;s considered the center of tango in the city and is a must visit for any tango aficionados that <a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/tours\/medellin\" target=\"_blank\">travel to Medell\u00edn<\/a>.\u00a0There are plenty of other places to visit, however, including Casa Gardeliana. Certainly the tango you encounter feels less tourist-driven than in Buenos Aires, but whether that&#8217;s enough for the city to take the crown we&#8217;re not sure.
