La Pola is a hero of Colombian independence, and her story is not only fascinating in itself, but in the course of Colombia&#8217;s rich history, too. One of the most important figures in South American history.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Manuela Saenz<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3162\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3162\" style=\"width: 221px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/saenz.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3162\" title=\"Manuela Saenz\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/saenz.jpg\" alt=\"Manuela Saenz\" width=\"221\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3162\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Manuela Saenz<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Often overlooked by history books, Manuela Saenz is another woman that plays an integral part in South America&#8217;s history. As the partner of Simon Bolivar, she played a crucial role in the independence effort and prevented Bolivar from being\u00a0assassinated\u00a0(after which she got the nickname &#8216;The Liberator of The Liberator). And that&#8217;s not to mention the 69 other female athletes who, together with these 4, made up 73 of Colombia&#8217;s 147 Olympic athletes. She&#8217;s now a Grammy-nominated and Latin Grammy winning musical artist, responsible for some of the biggest tunes to come out of Colombia in years! Add in her amazing talent\u00a0and all-round strong female image and Goyo is certainly a cracking role model for all Colombian women out there&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Ingrid Betancourt<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3164\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3164\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/ingrid-localizada-748221.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3164\" title=\"Ingrid Betancourt\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/ingrid-localizada-748221-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Ingrid Betancourt\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/ingrid-localizada-748221-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/ingrid-localizada-748221.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3164\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ingrid Betancourt<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Betancourt is a controversial figure, to say the least. She spent years captive under the control of the FARC after being captured. Some say she was brave to go, others say she was irresponsible. Upon her release the nation celebrated, but she subsequently attempted to sue the State of Colombia and therefore alienated herself from Colombians in general. Although we preferred her when she was a dark-haired and a little more of an enigma, she&#8217;s still vitally important thanks to her extensive charity work, as well as the fact she raises the profile of the country. Once Marcela was in Egypt speaking to a tour guide. For many of us it&#8217;s our first introduction of women&#8217;s culture and\u00a0matriarchy\u00a0in Colombia.<\/p>\n<p>Our favorites: The enigmatic Sierva Mar\u00eda from <em>Of Love and Other Demons<\/em>, Mama Grande from <em>Los Funerales de la Mama Grande<\/em> <em>and Others<\/em> and the stubborn Fermina Daza from <em>Love In the Time of Cholera.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Fanny Mikey<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3168\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3168\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/43274_164038_34.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3168\" title=\"Fanny Mikey\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/43274_164038_34.jpg\" alt=\"Fanny Mikey\" width=\"600\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/43274_164038_34.jpg 600w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/43274_164038_34-300x140.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3168\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fanny Mikey<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Unfortunately we lost Fanny Mikey 4 years ago, but her legend lives on. You&#8217;ve almost certainly heard her voice, however. As the brash, iconic singer of Bomba Estereo, Saumet is important because she and her band are showing the world&#8217;s masses just how diverse and exciting Colombia&#8217;s independent music scene is.
