I seriously started thinking on not only moving, but actually settling down in Bogota. I was already getting a little bored of Buenos Aires, a city I used to love with passion but that – to me- now lacked the Latin, unpretentious and relaxed vibe I was looking for. This time, as an adult, the decision of leaving all the many good things I had behind wasn’t that easy but I have always trusted my instinct and it was shouting to me that I had to come here, and so I did.

Marcela and JL in Boyaca

This, of course, is in no small part to my wife, Marcela. We met years ago via Facebook (an interesting story in itself which we’ll have more on later…) and things have just grown and grown since then. In her, and in Colombia, I saw a home for the rest of my life. I left my former job as a part-owner of one of the biggest travel companies in South America and risked it all to come here and help Marcela take See Colombia Travel to the next level . I have never been happier with any other decision I’ve taken in my life.

Jon’s Story

My story, although strange, I’m sure is not unique here. I met my girlfriend, who happens to be Colombian, in the UK literally days before she had to return to Bogota. We had only one formal date before she left which went so well that it seemed only natural for me to immediately book my flights for a 3 week holiday in Colombia. During those 3 weeks we travelled the length and breadth of the country and somewhere along the way I fell in love with the place and the girl. Moving here shortly after was a big decision, but not a difficult one. That was almost one year ago to the day.

Better than being on Skype

We’ve now been living together in Bogota for the last 7 months and are about to share our second Valentines Day together (although the fact the first one was shared over Skype killed the romance a little), and we really couldn’t be happier. I guess I feel pretty lucky, not only to have found her but to be living in this country. I don’t understand why more people haven’t done it….

Sara’s Story

They say that rules are made to be broken.

In my adult life, I have always said I wouldn’t do two things: Move somewhere because of a guy or have a long distance relationship. As I traveled around Central America last year my thoughts about these two self-imposed rules were reinforced and upheld.

That is, of course, until I met Felipe.

Sara and Felipe at Monserrate

We were both working on an island in Panama and met the last weekend I lived there. I was leaving in order to travel to Colombia, where he happened to be from, and where he happened to be returning two weeks after I left. We made plans to meet up, and I visited him in his hometown of Manizales. We had a great time, but I had to return to the US after spending less than a week with him. I boarded the overnight bus for Bogota and thought to myself how unfortunate it was that we were from different parts of the world. After all, how could a relationship work several thousand miles apart?

Well, I returned to Colorado, and we surprisingly stayed in frequent contact. I didn’t feel like being in my country. And at the same time, I was really digging this boy. So, as fate or chance would have it, I decided to take a leap and move to Colombia and see where this new-found love would lead. So, after spending 5 months doing the long-distance thing, I moved to Bogota. For a guy. Regardless of where this ends up going, I am very glad that I took this risk. And that I broke my own rules – I guess it just took the right person for me to break them.

Paul’s Story

Paul & Valentina at a wedding in Colombia

Kids, in the December of 2010 I was in Argentina working as an editorial intern. At the time I thought that was pretty huge, but one of the biggest moments in my life was still to come…

You know Aunt Marcela? Well, Marcela and I were sat drinking a coffee and she mentioned a project he was starting in Colombia. She wanted me to be a part of it. Suddenly I was faced with the decision: move back to England as I had planned or move to Colombia? I decided the latter and since I moved here it has been legen… Wait for it…

…dary.

So my story of coming to Colombia is more opportunity-based than others. I didn’t come for the love of anything except adventure and travel. Since being here though, I met a florist with Diana Ross-style hair. She intuiged me. Before long I was seeing her every day and doing crazy things like going to the cinema on a Friday night. I didn’t come here with a relationship in my mind, but I soon decided being a Marshall was more rewarding than being a Barney.

And anything’s better than being a Ted.

So Valentine’s Day is almost here and, love it or hate it, it’s pretty much unavoidable.
