So, without further ado, <strong>here are our top 10 Colombian travel destinations for 2017\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>1. San Jos\u00e9 del Guaviare, Guaviare<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This list is officially in no particular order, but if it were, then <strong>this would still be No. 1<\/strong> \u2013 the small capital city of Guaviare department isn\u2019t necessarily much to look at first glance, but <strong>it\u2019s located smack bang in the middle of some of Colombia\u2019s most incredible and diverse sights<\/strong>. Within a couple of hours of the city you can visit <a href=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2016\/11\/cerro-azul-nuevo-tolima-el-raudal-ancient-rock-paintings-in-guaviare\/\">10,000 year old rock paintings<\/a>, perfectly reflective jungle lakes (see the cover photo), a red river that is <a href=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2016\/08\/cano-cristales-long-lost-twin-tranquilandia-in-guaviare\/\">the twin of Ca\u00f1o Cristales<\/a>, surreal rock formations, refreshing swimming holes, all whilst checking out amazing natural diversity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have visited San Jos\u00e9 del Guaviare 3 times now, and I have seen toucans, parrots, 4 different species of monkeys, and much more. <strong>It has quickly become my most highly recommended destination in the country.<\/strong> If I had to pick one place to recommend to travelers in 2017 it would be Guaviare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/quote-your-trip-to-colombia-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Don\u2019t wait anymore! Jeric\u00f3 is a Colombian Heritage Town, Tamesis is home to some of the best adventure sports in Colombia (not to mention one of the best views, after one of the loveliest hikes, I have ever seen \u2013 see photo below), and in Valparaiso you can visit and stay at the lovely La Elisa coffee farm or spend some time at the local Embera Chami indigenous reservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/quote-your-trip-to-colombia-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Plan and quote your visit to The Cartama Valley and enjoy each town and its surprises.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then there\u2019s La Pintada, which is often written off as nothing but a \u2018swimming pools and beer\u2019 destination but offers so much more, including <strong>discovering the traditions of artisanal gold mining and hiking around the stunning <em>farallones <\/em>mountains<\/strong>. On last year&#8217;s list we mentioned the \u2018Alternative Coffee Trail\u2019 as a recommended destination, but this time we\u2019re going to be even more specific: make time to visit this delightful little town, a real off-the-beaten-track coffee region destination.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2016\/09\/experiencia-cafetera-wakecup-coffee-tour-buenavista\/\">a post about our visit there<\/a> earlier in the year declaring the Experiencia Cafetera coffee tour to neighboring Pijao as \u201cthe best coffee tour in Colombia\u201d and we\u2019re sticking by that bold claim. Plus, the rafting is some of the best in Colombia: level 4 and 5 monsters roiling through the narrow jungle-clad canyon as the river carves its way through the Antioquia countryside.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was easily the best rafting I\u2019ve experienced in Colombia, and the excellent guidance provided by <a href=\"http:\/\/expeditioncolombia.com\/\">Expedition Colombia<\/a> made the experience even more unique. Photo: Expedition Colombia<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>5.&nbsp;<em>Pueblos<\/em> of Boyac\u00e1<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No, not Villa de Leyva! <a href=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2016\/10\/10-reasons-why-you-have-to-visit-boyaca\/\">Another excellent trip<\/a> we did this year was exploring some of Boyac\u00e1 department&#8217;s lesser-known small towns, and boy, were we impressed! T<strong>his rural department north of Bogot\u00e1 has so much more to offer beyond the iconic Villa de Leyva: Tibasosa, Tenza, Sutatenza, Mongui, Paipa, Macanal, Iza<\/strong> (easily one of the loveliest towns I\u2019ve visited in Colombia)\u2026the list could go on!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best part: all of these towns are really close together and easily toured in a few days. B<strong>ut trust us, once you meet Boyac\u00e1\u2019s people you\u2019ll want to stay longer<\/strong> \u2013 a strong contender for the friendliest department, Boyac\u00e1 is a treasure trove of off-the-beaten-track colonial towns and kind folks. The central department of the Colombian&nbsp;<em>llanos orientales,&nbsp;<\/em>or Eastern Plains, Casanare couldn&#8217;t be much different to the Andean regions that it <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It\u2019s truly remarkable that Casanare department exists and isn\u2019t full of tourists and travelers<\/strong>. The central department of the Colombian <em>llanos orientales, <\/em>or Eastern Plains, Casanare couldn\u2019t be much different from the Andean regions that it borders.<strong> A department of cowboys, giant rivers and plains, incredible nature and unique culture<\/strong>, in other countries Casanare would most likely be a major tourist destination, and it is poised to become one over the next few years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A visit to a giant nature reserve <em>finca<\/em><strong><em> <\/em><\/strong><strong>in Casanare can yield incredible sighting of a variety of birds and mammals, as well as giant caimans and anacondas <\/strong>\u2013 it\u2019s the closest equivalent to a safari in Colombia, and probably second only to Brazil\u2019s <em>Pantanal <\/em>region for wildlife spotting in South America. But why visit? <strong>For the town&#8217;s delicious Pacific coast food, Afro-Colombian culture, remarkable natural diversity (it\u2019s arguably the best place in Colombia to enjoy views of toucans), and <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/04\/tubing-in-san-cipriano-valle-del-cauca\/\"><strong>tubing along the clear jungle rivers<\/strong><\/a><strong> that snake through the surrounding jungle.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh yeah, and <a href=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/03\/riding-the-brujitas-in-san-cipriano\/\">then there are the <em>brujitas<\/em><\/a> \u2013 the inhabitants of the town have come up with a unique solution to their isolation: they\u2019ve attached motorbikes and wooden boards together and to get to the town you simply sit on a bench while the bike zips you along the old train tracks through the jungle like a decommissioned theme park ride! <strong>It\u2019s a perfectly Colombian experience: exhilarating, one-of-a-kind, with just a hint of danger and uncertainty!&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/quote-your-trip-to-colombia-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Visit Cali for sure, and make certain to get out for a few days and explore San Cipriano.
