But\u00a0Boyac\u00e1 has a huge amount to offer beyond Villa de Leyva, as I found out on a recent press trip to the department with Cotelco Colombia and the regional tourist office. I have to admit that <strong>I was a bit naive to the department&#8217;s charms and incredible diversity<\/strong> and tourist potential before the trip, but came away with my desire to explore\u00a0Boyac\u00e1 heightened, and with <strong>plenty of strong reasons to recommend it<\/strong> to fellow Colombia travellers. So here are my <strong>10 reasons why you have to make time to visit\u00a0Boyac\u00e1<\/strong> (without a single mention of Villa de Leyva!)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24096\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24096\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/062-2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24096\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/062.jpg\" alt=\"visit boyaca colombia\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/062.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/062-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/062-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24096\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The lovely ladies of the Tibasosa dance group<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.\u00a0<em>Los Boyacenses<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Colombians across the board have gained a strong (and reasonable) reputation for friendliness and kindness among the traveler community, but <strong>folk from\u00a0Boyac\u00e1 might just have the No. 1 spot locked down!<\/strong> The department is proud of it&#8217;s reputation for peace, tranquility and kindness, and the\u00a0<em>boyacenses\u00a0<\/em>I met during my visit did not disappoint. <strong>Visiting small towns such as Macanal, Iza, Firavitoba, Tenza and Tibasosa, I was met with warm smiles, kind words, and generosity without exception<\/strong>. Wonderful off-the-beaten-track small towns&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Colombian small towns might just be the best places to experience the best of Colombia: friendly people, charming architecture, and interesting culture.\u00a0<strong>Boyac\u00e1 is known in Colombia for having the highest number of\u00a0<\/strong><em><strong>pueblos<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>and there are so many you can visit for an off-the-beaten-track authentic experience far from the main tourist trail. Mongui is another\u00a0<em>pueblo patrimonio\u00a0<\/em>of Colombia, but <strong>you can find even more stunning architecture and local charm in any one of Iza, Tibasosa, Tenza, Sutatenza, Macanal, Firavitoba, Paipa<\/strong>&#8230;the list could go on and on! History<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Boyac\u00e1 is <strong>one of the cradles of Colombia&#8217;s modern history<\/strong> following the Wars of Independence, as well as being an important region for the indigenous Muisca heritage. Those with a particular interest in history will enjoy being able to <strong>visit the sites of key battles in Simon Bolivar&#8217;s campaign<\/strong> against the Spanish, such as the &#8216;Puente de\u00a0Boyac\u00e1&#8217; and the &#8216;Pantano de Vargas,&#8217; both of which are crowned with impressive monuments and informative tours. <strong>A visit to the department capital of Tunja comes replete with several museums and some beautifully preserved colonial houses<\/strong>, whilst the\u00a0<em>Ciclorama\u00a0<\/em>at the site of the &#8216;Puente de\u00a0Boyac\u00e1&#8217; is a wonderfully presented 360 degree mural covering the history of Bolivar&#8217;s campaigns in the department.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24099\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24099\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/dscn8476\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24099\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/DSCN8476.jpg\" alt=\"visit boyaca colombia\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/DSCN8476.jpg 600w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/DSCN8476-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24099\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Learning how classic ruanas are made in Iza<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. The land of\u00a0<em>artesanias<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re ever <strong>looking for souvenirs from Colombia then\u00a0Boyac\u00e1 is definitely the place to visit<\/strong>: the iconic\u00a0<em>ruana\u00a0<\/em>poncho, emeralds, woven baskets and bowls, colorful\u00a0<em>guacamaya\u00a0<\/em>bowls and vases, pottery from\u00a0R\u00e1quira&#8230;the list goes on and on.\u00a0<strong><em>Boyac\u00e1 <\/em>is a land of wonderful artesanal products, partly due to the region&#8217;s indigenous heritage<\/strong>. You can learn all about the production of\u00a0<em>ruanas\u00a0<\/em>in Nobsa, Iza or Firavitoba as well for a fascinating insight on a very old and intricate tradition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Relaxation and comfort<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If adventure tourism isn&#8217;t really your bag then <strong>look no further than Paipa<\/strong>, a spa town not far from Tunja, set alongside a lovely reservoir (with the option of a boat cruise) &#8211; with a hot spring source bubbling up on the edge of town, <strong>there are a wealth of spas, pools and relaxing &#8216;wellness&#8217; centers<\/strong>. The Centro de Hidroterapia is a particularly appealing option, with excellent pools, facilities and mud baths, whilst the Estelar Paipa Hotel Spa has great rooms on the banks of the lake and a nice spa as well. <strong>Paipa is definitely the place to come to unwind and get away from the stresses of the city or of travelling.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24097\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24097\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/dscn8124\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24097\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/DSCN8124.jpg\" alt=\"visit boyaca colombia\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/DSCN8124.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/DSCN8124-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/DSCN8124-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24097\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Chivor reservoir near Macanal &#8211; there&#8217;s are some lovely nature walks and waterfalls around this region<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Nature and Ecotourism<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Boyac\u00e1 is relatively well-known (especially among Colombians) for it&#8217;s\u00a0<em>pueblos\u00a0<\/em>and kind people, but fewer folk associate the department with ecotourism and nature. However,\u00a0<strong>Boyac\u00e1 is home to some beautiful natural places<\/strong> &#8211; the\u00a0<em>Paramo\u00a0<\/em>de Oceta above Mongui is known as the most beautiful\u00a0<em>paramo\u00a0<\/em>in the world, whilst the area surrounding Macanal in the south-east of the department borders the eastern plains, and is home to <strong>cloud forest, the giant Chivor reservoir, stunning waterfalls, and excellent birdwatching.\u00a0<\/strong>It&#8217;s closed right now, but the department is also the home of El Cocuy National Park, the site of the best high-mountain trekking in Colombia&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24102\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24102\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/dscn8129\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24102\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/DSCN8129.jpg\" alt=\"visit boyaca colombia\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/DSCN8129.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/DSCN8129-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/DSCN8129-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24102\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Big, eh?!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>7. Emeralds<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Boyac\u00e1 is well known worldwide for it&#8217;s emerald mines; in fact, <strong>the department mines more emeralds than anywhere else on earth!<\/strong> However, far from simply being a place where commercial mining takes place, Boyac\u00e1 is branching out into tourism with it&#8217;s emeralds &#8211; a local miner in Chivor has decided to hang up his head-lamp and guide tourists on a <strong>&#8216;be an emerald miner for the day&#8217; tour<\/strong>. Delicious food<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Boyac\u00e1 is also home to some delicious Colombian delicacies &#8211; the winding rivers of the department are perfect for <strong>fresh trout, Paipa is the home of\u00a0<em>queso paipa,\u00a0<\/em>a tasty traditional cheese, Tibasosa is known for it&#8217;s feijoa<\/strong> (an unusual and delicious fruit) products, and in Tunja you have to pay a visit to Restaurante Raul Moreno &#8220;Los Helechos&#8221; for <strong>a traditional meat-feast that will leave even the most hardcore carnivores open-mouthed!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>9. Convenience and easy travel<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It might seem like a slightly random thing to include on this list, but <strong>part of the beauty of travelling in\u00a0Boyac\u00e1 is the wonderful convenience of transport and travel<\/strong> &#8211; most of these towns are less than an hour apart, with regular buses travelling between them. It means that, even in a long weekend, <strong>you could manage a trip between several of the destinations listed without spending much time or money on travel.<\/strong> The proximity to Bogota is an added bonus.
