I had never even considered traveling there, let alone living there. In fact\u2026I can\u2019t even remember learning about the country in all of my education; <strong>I could only remember the violent drug related news stories of my childhood<\/strong>. Of course, Colombia isn\u2019t the only country to get an unfair rap from Western media, but it is one in need of an update. When I first announced my move to Colombia, I received a lot of well intentioned warnings: <strong>\u201cDon\u2019t tell anyone about your family\u201d [for fear of being kidnapped],<\/strong> \u201cDon\u2019t wander into neighborhoods you don\u2019t know\u201d [for fear of running into a drug cartel], \u201cCareful, who knows who your students\u2019 parents might be\u201d [for fear of\u2026being killed\u00a0for giving out a B+?]. <strong>Colombia\u2019s reputation was clearly a notorious one&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20610\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20610\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/12\/expectations-vs-reality-a-solo-female-u-s-traveler-to-colombia\/img_0291\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-20610\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20610\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_0291.jpg\" alt=\"Solo Female Travel Colombia\" width=\"800\" height=\"575\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_0291.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_0291-300x216.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20610\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Still keeping an eye open&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, a small amount of research beyond the U.S.\u2019s media portrayal of the country revealed <strong>how amazing of a country Colombia is<\/strong>. I found articles like Adam Seper\u2019s, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bootsnall.com\/articles\/10-02\/why-you-should-ignore-everything-youve-heard-go-to-colombia.html\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cWhy You Should Ignore Everything You\u2019ve Heard and Go to Colombia\u201d<\/a> and Justin Calderon\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2013\/04\/24\/travel\/colombia-10-things\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201c10 Things to Know Before Visiting Colombia\u201d<\/a>; as I learned from those who had actually been to the country in the last 5-10 years, I could feel the stereotypes melt away. <strong>The reality of my experience in Colombia has been incredibly warm and positive<\/strong> to the point of making those expectations of fear and worry feel embarrassing.<\/p>\n<p>When I arrived,<strong> I was greeted at the airport with warm hugs and smiles<\/strong>. Students from my new school offered to take me out for coffee and the classic Manizales pastry, Miloha, before school even started. <strong>I\u2019ve been asked if I\u2019m happy in Colombia at least once a day since I\u2019ve been here<\/strong>, and I\u2019ve been kissed on the cheek more times in my 4 months here than in all my years in the United States. Of course I don\u2019t mean to paint a portrait of perfection; <strong>there are of course areas I\u2019ve been told to avoid, but isn\u2019t that the truth with any country?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20611\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20611\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/12\/expectations-vs-reality-a-solo-female-u-s-traveler-to-colombia\/img_0730\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-20611\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20611\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_0730.jpg\" alt=\"Solo Female Travel Colombia\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_0730.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_0730-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20611\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wandering the streets of Cartagena<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I expected fear and violence, but<strong> I found warm, generous people who went out of their way to help me<\/strong>. I found a community that closed main every Sunday so people could bike, rollerblade, run, and walk their dogs.<strong> I found gorgeous, heart-stopping National Parks<\/strong>. I found a love of dancing, music, and parties. I found a game where you get to throw rocks at gunpowder (and yes, <strong>Tejo is as awesome as it\u00a0sounds<\/strong>). There is thought provoking and beautiful street art every few blocks. There is an acceptance, nay, worship of bootyliciousness that absolutely delights a pear-shape from the thin-obsessed US and would make even Beyonc\u00e9 proud. <strong>I expected the climate to be hot and humid, but I discovered a treasure trove of microclimates<\/strong>. I expected plain cuisine, but found exotic fruit juices and delicious street empanadas with hot chilli sauce. I found fresh ceviche doused in mango sauce in Cartagena, and I\u2019ve come to salivate while waiting for lunch at school when Ajiaco is on the menu. <strong>In almost every way, the real Colombia is so much more vibrant and welcoming than I expected.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I feel illuminated to have moved to a country where <strong>the negative expectations I harbored were challenged<\/strong>.
