{"id":20120,"date":"2021-06-07T08:14:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-07T13:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/?p=20120"},"modified":"2021-09-05T20:00:37","modified_gmt":"2021-09-06T01:00:37","slug":"santanders-cano-cristales-the-rivers-of-guadalupe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2021\/06\/santanders-cano-cristales-the-rivers-of-guadalupe\/","title":{"rendered":"Santander&#8217;s &#8220;Ca\u00f1o Cristales&#8221; &#8211; The Rivers of Guadalupe"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/11\/visit-quebrada-las-gachas-guadalupe-santander\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Photo Gallery: The Red Rivers of Guadalupe, Santander<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ca\u00f1o Cristales is (rightfully) becoming one of Colombia\u2019s most iconic sights:<\/strong> next year it will appear on Colombia\u2019s new banknotes, and people from around the world are coming to Colombia and leaving enchanted with the \u2018river that escaped from heaven.\u2019 However, this trip is not easy to undertake or cheap; for many people it\u2019s a step too far on a budget trip to Colombia\u2026&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/quote-your-trip-to-colombia-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">List here to also visit the renowned Ca\u00f1o Cristales.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Enter Guadalupe, a small <\/strong><strong><em>pueblo <\/em><\/strong><strong>of a few thousand people in southern Santander department. <\/strong>Before visiting Guadalupe I had little idea of it even existing; there is very little information online (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guadalupe,_Santander\">save a Wikipedia page!<\/a>) and tourism there is very limited to some \u201c<em>puente\u201d <\/em>weekenders from Santander itself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>And, in fairness, Guadalupe is much like many <\/strong><strong><em>pueblos <\/em><\/strong><strong>in Santander: whitewashed, low buildings, with red-tiled roofs and cobbled streets. It takes about an hour to hike there<\/strong> (set off early if you can, the heat gets intense towards midday!), but it\u2019s well-worth the sweat\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/quote-your-trip-to-colombia-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Planning to visit Santander? Reserve today.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/santanders-cano-cristales-the-rivers-of-guadalupe-3.jpg\" alt=\"Las Gachas Guadalupe Santander\" class=\"wp-image-27479\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/santanders-cano-cristales-the-rivers-of-guadalupe-3.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/santanders-cano-cristales-the-rivers-of-guadalupe-3-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/santanders-cano-cristales-the-rivers-of-guadalupe-3-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption>Those jacuzzis are deep (this photo isn\u2019t fake \u2013 it really was deeper than my height!)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Las Gachas isn\u2019t red for the same reason as Cano Cristales: there the redness (and other colors) is caused by algal plants,<strong> here it\u2019s the color of the rocks and an oxide they contain that makes the river appear red. <\/strong>However, the advantage of that is that there is no \u2018season\u2019 at Las Gachas; it\u2019s like this all year round (but it looks <strong>better when the sun has been shining, and the jacuzzis are clearer if it hasn\u2019t been raining recently!<\/strong>).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The flow of the water has also added another bonus element to a visit here: the \u2018jacuzzis.\u2019 These are the deep, round holes you can see in the above photo:<strong> they are up to 2\/3 meters deep and perfect for sitting in and relaxing in the water after a hot, sweaty hike! <\/strong>The distant views of the Andes and the calm, quiet countryside around, the silence punctuated only by birdsong and occasional cow-sounds, make this place like something out of a slightly trippy dream! It might not be as iconic as Colombia\u2019s other red river, but that certainly doesn\u2019t make it any less beautiful or unusual\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>2017 UPDATE \u2013 There have been worrying recent reports from Guadalupe about tourists leaving large amounts of trash behind when they visit Las Gachas \u2013 <\/em><strong><em>please, please, please<\/em><\/strong><em> (and we really can\u2019t emphasize this enough) clean up your rubbish and take it back to town to dispose of it properly! I only spent a weekend there, and I already need to find a spare weekend to go back, as there were extra activities I didn\u2019t have time for! <strong>Most focus around rivers, waterfalls and caves: I didn\u2019t manage to visit Salto la Llanera and the nearby caves of Perico and Indio, but they look amazing!<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/quote-your-trip-to-colombia-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Schedule your visit to Guadalupe and enjoy all these activities.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The town itself also has its charms:<\/strong> the \u2018Casa de Cultura\u2019 on the main square is interesting and free, you can hike a short distance out of the town and enjoy a wonderful panoramic view, and <strong>the main church is one of the more beautiful I have seen in a country of beautiful churches!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/santanders-cano-cristales-the-rivers-of-guadalupe-5.jpg\" alt=\"Guadalupe Santander Church\" class=\"wp-image-27481\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/santanders-cano-cristales-the-rivers-of-guadalupe-5.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/santanders-cano-cristales-the-rivers-of-guadalupe-5-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/santanders-cano-cristales-the-rivers-of-guadalupe-5-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption>The beautiful main church<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>On my second day in the town, however, I did manage to enjoy a hike through the countryside again to visit Quebrada del Salitre and Pozo La Gloria<\/strong>, another river and swimming hole that were almost equally beautiful as Las Gachas. Both are just 10 minutes walk from the town, but can be turned into a lovely little hour long hike: simply walk to Salitre and then hike 2 km up along the shallow river, before turning off into the countryside over a hill and coming to the man-made swimming spot La Gloria.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This could be tricky to find by yourself: we went with excellent local guide Jose, from the Hostal and Restaurant Bonanza. He was born in the town and returned here about 18 months ago to realize his dream of bringing tourism to the town: we were having breakfast in his (excellent) restaurant, just off the main square, and asked him about visiting Salitre \u2013 he told us to come back in an hour and proceeded to take us on a totally <em>gratis <\/em>hike along the rivers, and I hadn\u2019t even name-dropped the blog!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Do not forget to check more hidden destinations in our blog.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/santanders-cano-cristales-the-rivers-of-guadalupe-6.jpg\" alt=\"El Salitre Guadalupe Santander\" class=\"wp-image-27482\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/santanders-cano-cristales-the-rivers-of-guadalupe-6.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/santanders-cano-cristales-the-rivers-of-guadalupe-6-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/santanders-cano-cristales-the-rivers-of-guadalupe-6-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption>Enjoying a hike up El Salitre<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The trip was lovely:<strong> a relaxing (if sometimes slippery) hike through the actual river, enjoying the cool waters running over my feet, basking in the warm Santander sunshine, and marvelling at the (still red) waters of El Salitre.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La Gloria is a deep swimming hole, fed by a river and dammed up (apparently for over a hundred years) to create a safe and peaceful swimming spot. It\u2019s not radically different to visiting Las Gachas, but if you like <strong>gorgeous scenery, sunshine and swimming in beautiful rivers\u2026then you can\u2019t go far wrong with a visit to Guadalupe<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/santanders-cano-cristales-the-rivers-of-guadalupe-7.jpg\" alt=\"El Salitre Guadalupe Santander\" class=\"wp-image-27483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/santanders-cano-cristales-the-rivers-of-guadalupe-7.jpg 600w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/santanders-cano-cristales-the-rivers-of-guadalupe-7-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption>What a place, right?!<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Jose is an excellent guide (and I\u2019m not just saying that cause of the price!) \u2013 I\u2019ve rarely had a more attentive, passionate and knowledgeable tour guide in all my travels: he clearly cares deeply about the place, and it shows in the information he has to give a visitor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He charges around 15,000 for a trip to the waterfalls and caves mentioned above, and it\u2019s certainly worth that fairly small sum. His restaurant is the best I went to in the town as well (the <em>churrasco <\/em>was especially good) and, although I stayed in a different hotel, the location of his is great. He even helped my friend and I buy some unroasted coffee from the local coffee cultivator\u2019s collective, and then walked us around the town, explaining the history, before taking us to the \u2018bus station\u2019 to buy a return ticket! If you arrive in Oiba before 5:30 pm then grab a \u201ccolectivo\u201d to Guadalupe (cost: 6,500 for a one-hour trip); if you arrive later, enjoy the main square in Oiba and sleep over \u2013 we stayed at Hotel Los Balcones, directly over the road from where the \u201ccolectivos\u201d depart. It was clean and quiet and a double room cost just 20,000.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2021\/08\/5-more-amazing-day-trips-from-bogota\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Look! 5 more amazing Day Trips from Bogot\u00e1.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>In Guadalupe, we stayed at Hotel Remanso Colonial, one of several lovely old hotels near the main square. T<\/em><strong><em>he rooms were high-ceilinged and airy, and a room with both a double and single bed cost just 35,000 (<\/em><\/strong><em>a steal when split between 2 people or more). Breakfast and lunch are easy to come by \u2013 breakfast at around 6,000 and ample, and lunch at around 8-10.000.
