{"id":19888,"date":"2015-08-27T09:57:31","date_gmt":"2015-08-27T14:57:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/?p=19888"},"modified":"2021-08-23T11:33:09","modified_gmt":"2021-08-23T16:33:09","slug":"colombia-photos-el-valle-and-utria-national-park-el-choco","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/08\/colombia-photos-el-valle-and-utria-national-park-el-choco\/","title":{"rendered":"Colombia Photos: El Valle and Utria National Park, El Choco"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Colombia&#8217;s Choco department, in the far west of the country, bordering the Pacific ocean, is a complex place: the poorest, most deprived region of the country, with some of the highest rainfall on earth, but <strong>blessed with a rich natural wealth, from humpback whales breeding in it&#8217;s warm waters, to incredible birdl and plant-life.<\/strong> I recently spend some time exploring the area around Bahia Solano, specifically El Valle and the Utria National Park, so <strong>here&#8217;s a selection of my best photos from that trip. In fact, from the terrace of my hostel,<strong> The Humpback Turtle, in El Valle<\/strong>, whales were often seen out to sea.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19902\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19902\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/08\/colombia-photos-el-valle-and-utria-national-park-el-choco\/attachment\/391\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19902\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19902\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/391.jpg\" alt=\"Termales de Jurubida Choco\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/391.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/391-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19902\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The jungle river that leads to the Termales de Jurubida<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The other side of Choco&#8217;s nature: t<strong>he deep jungles that blanket the coast and hide a marvelous array of hidden treasures<\/strong>, including the poison arrow frogs and basilisks that we saw walking along this river. This river\/path led deep into the forest from the fringes of the town of Jurubida to some <strong>small natural, thermal pools, and deep, cool swimming holes in the higher reaches of the river.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19908\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19908\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/08\/colombia-photos-el-valle-and-utria-national-park-el-choco\/attachment\/369\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19908\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19908\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/369.jpg\" alt=\"Termales de Jurubida Choco\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/369.jpg 600w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/369-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19908\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Termales de Jurubida<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here&#8217;s one of the thermal pools in the jungl<\/strong>e: it might not look like that much but the water is naturally bubbling up from the rocks at the bottom of the pool, and is breath-stealingly hot! Whilst I sat, enjoying the deep soak in the pool, <strong>a giant blue\u00a0<em>Morpho\u00a0<\/em>butterfly fluttered through the nearby tree branches and a tiny black and red poison dart frog hopped along the edge of the pool.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19903\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19903\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/08\/colombia-photos-el-valle-and-utria-national-park-el-choco\/attachment\/444\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19903\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19903\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/444.jpg\" alt=\"Jurubida Colombia\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/444.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/444-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19903\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The beach and bay in front of Jurubida<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The small (maybe 700 inhabitants) town of Jurubida is where you go to enjoy the hot-springs, as well as the friendly atmosphere of the town and the excellent food.<strong> It takes about an hour and a half by boat from El Valle<\/strong>, but it&#8217;s well-worth the trip &#8211; you can see whales and the Utria National Park on both journeys and <strong>the town itself is a truly isolated but beautiful little place.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19905\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19905\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/08\/colombia-photos-el-valle-and-utria-national-park-el-choco\/attachment\/470\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19905\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19905\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/470.jpg\" alt=\"Jurubida Colombia\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/470.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/470-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19905\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Some ingenuity in Jurubida<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>This guy shows both sides of the realities of the Choco<\/strong>: on one hand, the incredible poverty of the region forcing a fisherman to utilize a ripped tarpaulin as a sail for his little craft, but, on the other, the ingenuity and passion of the people on this coast, who<strong> manage to retain a\u00a0positive and happy attitude to life in spite of the hardships of life in the Choco.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19906\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19906\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/08\/colombia-photos-el-valle-and-utria-national-park-el-choco\/483-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19906\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19906\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/483.jpg\" alt=\"Utria National Park Colombia\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/483.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/483-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19906\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Utria National Park, seen from the Pacific<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The weather seen in this photo is perhaps not truly indicative of the general weather patterns in this region; one of the wettest places on earth. However, <strong>during the whale season, especially in July and August, a visitor stands a good chance of enjoying some stunning blue skies like these<\/strong>. Believe it or not, that morning, taking this same route to Jurubida, I could barely open my eyes against the driving rain, and <strong>the distant mountains were completely invisible.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19897\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19897\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/08\/colombia-photos-el-valle-and-utria-national-park-el-choco\/097-4\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19897\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19897\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/097.jpg\" alt=\"Ensenada de Utria Colombia\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/097.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/097-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19897\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Ensenada de Utria<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>This long bay, which curves into the waters of the Utria National Park<\/strong>, is a popular site for calving humpback whales, and is <strong>the access point to the National Park office and cabins<\/strong>: it costs 40.000 COP for foreigners to visit the park, and 15.000 COP for Colombians.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19900\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19900\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/08\/colombia-photos-el-valle-and-utria-national-park-el-choco\/171-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19900\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19900\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/171.jpg\" alt=\"Utria National Park Colombia\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/171.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/171-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19900\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Another beach on another island in Utria National Park: all this beauty gets tiring (kidding!)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We stopped off at this gorgeous beach for lunch &#8211; surprise, surprise&#8230;fish! Not complaining though, <strong>the food along this coastline is wonderful<\/strong>. Earlier that day we had slipped gently into the water while 3 giant humpbacks passed by, silent and unseen, just 10m in front of us&#8230;<strong>the visibility is only about 3m: how remarkable that such giants can pass by so close, yet remain unseen and unheard.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19901\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19901\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/08\/colombia-photos-el-valle-and-utria-national-park-el-choco\/200-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19901\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19901\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/200.jpg\" alt=\"El Valle Choco Colombia\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/200.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/200-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19901\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The beach near to the port of El Valle, with a 30-strong flock of pelicans flying overhead&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The small town of El Valle is about half-an-hour drive from the airport and Bahia Solano<\/strong>, and is where many visitors to this coast stay on their trips.
