{"id":19628,"date":"2015-07-29T09:13:48","date_gmt":"2015-07-29T14:13:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/?p=19628"},"modified":"2021-03-16T17:35:21","modified_gmt":"2021-03-16T22:35:21","slug":"15-books-you-should-read-before-visiting-colombia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/07\/15-books-you-should-read-before-visiting-colombia\/","title":{"rendered":"15 Books You Should Read Before Visiting Colombia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A few years ago we published a<a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2012\/09\/books-you-should-read-before-coming-to-colombia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> list of recommended books to read before visiting Colombia<\/a>:<strong> this list contained such titles as\u00a0<em>100 Years of Solitude<\/em>,\u00a0<em>La voragine<\/em>, and <i>Maria<\/i>.<\/strong> It&#8217;s still a very relevant selection of excellent novels and non-fiction books to give any reader a good overview of Colombian, it&#8217;s history and culture. However, <strong>since that time many new books have been published, and we&#8217;ve discovered some great new ones<\/strong>: so here&#8217;s an update &#8211; 15 (yep, you heard! Value for &#8216;money&#8217; right?!) books you should read before visiting Colombia.<\/p>\n<p>Some romanticize Colombia, some are historical, some are fairly bleak: however, <strong>we believe it is important for a visitor to Colombia to be able to understand not only the beauty of the country, but also it&#8217;s past, present and future<\/strong>, in order to have a more well-rounded travel experience here. <strong>We&#8217;ve also included a section containing academic texts about Colombia<\/strong>: these are somewhat harder to get hold of, but most are sold through Amazon second-hand or can be found at University libraries. Not only offering an excellent plot, and well-written story, the novel also <strong>sheds some light on both the early years of the notorious Colombian drug trade, and the exceptionally violent 1990s<\/strong>. Perfect for anyone who loves a good story but also wants to learn more about how Colombia once was.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2012\/09\/books-you-should-read-before-coming-to-colombia\/gabriel-garcia-marquez-one-hundred-years-of-solitude-04\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4911\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4911\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/gabriel-garcia-marquez-one-hundred-years-of-solitude-04.jpg\" alt=\"100 Years of Solitude, Gabriel Garcia Marquez\" width=\"318\" height=\"475\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/gabriel-garcia-marquez-one-hundred-years-of-solitude-04.jpg 318w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/gabriel-garcia-marquez-one-hundred-years-of-solitude-04-201x300.jpg 201w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 318px) 100vw, 318px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Anything &#8211; Gabriel Garcia Marquez<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Nope, that&#8217;s not an obscure hipster Garcia Marquez tale you&#8217;ve never heard of; it just means that <strong>really any novel by the great Colombian writer would serve pretty well as a precursor for a visit to Colombia.<\/strong> We featured the classic\u00a0<em>100 Years of Solitude\u00a0<\/em>in our previous list, which still stands the test of time, but any one of\u00a0<em>Love in the Time of Cholera<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Nobody Writes to the Colonel<\/em>,\u00a0<em>News of a Kidnapping\u00a0<\/em>or any or the myriad others are <strong>well-worth a read for an insight into the magical realism of Colombia, as well as it&#8217;s complex history<\/strong>. OK, so it&#8217;s cheating a bit on a &#8217;15 books you should read&#8217; list&#8230;but what are you going to do, sue me?! That&#8217;s just value for money!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/07\/15-books-you-should-read-before-visiting-colombia\/delirium-laura-restrepo\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19671\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19671\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/delirium-laura-restrepo.jpg\" alt=\"delirium laura restrepo\" width=\"324\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/delirium-laura-restrepo.jpg 324w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/delirium-laura-restrepo-194x300.jpg 194w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 324px) 100vw, 324px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Delirium &#8211; Laura Restrepo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">This novel by Laura Restrepo is a wonderful book, told using multiple perspectives, and <strong>set in Bogota in the 1980s against a backdrop of violence and the drug trade<\/strong>. The narrative is beautifully constructed, and Restrepo&#8217;s writing is stunning. The depiction of Colombian society at the time might not always be the most flattering, but the truth is certainly there, and <strong>this novel sheds some light on a hard time in Colombia&#8217;s past.<\/strong> Hopefully this will help visitors to appreciate the many changes that have happened since the period depicted in\u00a0<em>Delirium<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Non-Fiction &amp; Travel<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/07\/15-books-you-should-read-before-visiting-colombia\/robber\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19638\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19638\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/robber.jpg\" alt=\"the robber of memories\" width=\"300\" height=\"473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/robber.jpg 300w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/robber-190x300.jpg 190w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>The Robber of Memories &#8211; Michael Jacobs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Michael Jacobs, now sadly gone, and the author of that other great book of South American exploration, <em>Andes<\/em>, wrote this <strong>wonderful account of a journey along the modern Magdalena River in an effort to come to terms with his parent&#8217;s Alzheimer&#8217;s Disease:<\/strong> the parallels between his experiences in a land of &#8216;forgetting&#8217; and his torments at the effects of the illness are nuanced and emotionally charged, and his descriptions of Colombia are both nostalgic and loving. <strong>A wonderful book for anyone with an interest in Colombian society and history, or who just loves a great travel narrative<\/strong>. Feiling pulls no punches in this informative account of the impact of violence on the country, but <strong>his passion and empathy for Colombia and it&#8217;s people it what shines brightest<\/strong>. Essential reading for modern travelers. Caroline Doherty de Novoa, Victoria Kellaway &amp; Richard McColl<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">A newly-published collection of essays, <strong>curated by several well-known Colombia-based expat journalists and authors<\/strong>,\u00a0<em>Was Gabo an Irishman?\u00a0<\/em>takes a look at Colombian through 26 personal essays by writers from all over the world. Spanish humanitarian workers, English anthropologists, Australian coffee farmers&#8230;<strong>all have a fascinating insight into the country, seen through a mutual love and appreciation of the work of Colombia&#8217;s great master, Garcia Marquez.\u00a0<\/strong>The book even made the official list of top books about Colombia by foreigners (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.colombia.co\/en\/culture\/top-five-foreign-books-colombia.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">read the list here<\/a>) recently published by colombia.co.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/07\/15-books-you-should-read-before-visiting-colombia\/oblivion\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19647\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19647\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/oblivion.jpg\" alt=\"oblivion\" width=\"220\" height=\"293\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Oblivion &#8211; Hector Abad Faciolince<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>Oblivion<\/em> is a memoir, and was described by the aforementioned Michael Jacobs as <strong>&#8220;one of the great memoirs of all time.&#8221;<\/strong> This seems fairly accurate: regardless of your knowledge or even interest in Colombia, Abad&#8217;s account of his father&#8217;s assassination by paramilitary groups is a visceral, compelling read. Although slightly dry in places, Bushnell&#8217;s book is thorough and detailed and<strong> contains much invaluable information that you might not otherwise find out.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Buying the Books:\u00a0<\/strong>Almost all of the fiction and non-fiction books can be purchased or ordered from most decent bookshops (<strong>try to support your local bookshop, we&#8217;ll miss them when they&#8217;re gone!<\/strong>).
