{"id":19299,"date":"2015-05-25T10:14:39","date_gmt":"2015-05-25T15:14:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/?p=19299"},"modified":"2016-03-18T06:55:06","modified_gmt":"2016-03-18T11:55:06","slug":"visit-jardin-antioquia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/05\/visit-jardin-antioquia\/","title":{"rendered":"A visit to Jardin, Antioquia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One of the things I have loved the most about traveling in\u00a0Colombia has been <strong>the country&#8217;s remarkable ability to keep surprising me<\/strong>; each time I think my personal &#8216;best places I&#8217;ve been in Colombia&#8217; list must surely be impregnable to newcomers, <strong>I visit somewhere else that insists on muscling in to the list!<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/04\/tubing-in-san-cipriano-valle-del-cauca\/\" target=\"_blank\">San Cipriano was one of those places<\/a>, as was <a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/02\/the-end-of-the-world-in-mocoa\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mocoa in Putumayo<\/a>&#8230;and <strong>the delightful little colonial town of Jardin<\/strong>, nestled in a green valley of coffee and curubu plantations in southern Antioquia department was most certainly one as well&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I visited Jardin on a\u00a0<em>puente\u00a0<\/em>(Colombian long-weekend holiday) in June and am <strong>already hoping to be back as soon as possible<\/strong>&#8230;why? The town has pretty much everything that I personally look for in a Colombian\u00a0<em>pueblo<\/em>: <strong>lovely colonial architecture, a pleasant and friendly atmosphere, excellent coffee, hiking<\/strong> (to an amazing waterfall), and world-class birdwatching nearby.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19303\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19303\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/05\/a-visit-to-jardin-antioquia\/fb-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19303\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19303\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/FB.jpg\" alt=\"Jardin Antioquia\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/FB.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/FB-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19303\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The main church in Jardin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s <strong>a pretty long list of activities to occupy you in Jardin<\/strong>, and most of them are perfect if, like me, you try to stay active when you travel. Arguably the most popular thing to do is <strong>take a horse or hike along a mountainside trail to the hidden Cueva del Esplendor<\/strong>: a large cave hidden away in a grove of tropical forest (seriously, it was like something from &#8216;Fern Gully&#8217; &#8211; anyone else love that movie?!), with <strong>a postcard quality waterfall falling directly through a hole in the cave roof<\/strong> (I&#8217;ll be writing a more detailed post on this hike later in the week). Swimming in the pool is permitted&#8230;but gosh-darned cold!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19304\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19304\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/05\/a-visit-to-jardin-antioquia\/044fb\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19304\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19304\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/044fb.jpg\" alt=\"Cueva del Esplendor Jardin\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/044fb.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/044fb-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19304\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Little chilly post-swim<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>You can also hike to the Cueva de los Guacharos<\/strong>: a similar cave containing a colony of the eerie oilbird; go rappelling in either cave; <strong>take a horse-ride around the coffee plantations<\/strong> that surround the town; <strong>do some paragliding<\/strong> to truly appreciate the jaw-dropping scenery; or hire a bird-guide and visit the ProAves reserve above the town to try and <strong>catch a sight of the highly endangered, endemic Yellow-eared Parrot<\/strong> &#8211; these huge, macaw-like parrots were very recently rediscovered, and number only about 300 in the wild, so you&#8217;ll be seeing something pretty special. <strong>You can also take the little cable-car up the hillside for a nice panoramic view of the town&#8230;<\/strong>Any one of these things can be easily arranged through your hotel or the town&#8217; tourist information office.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19305\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19305\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/05\/a-visit-to-jardin-antioquia\/074fb\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19305\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19305\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/074fb.jpg\" alt=\"Jardin Antioquia\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/074fb.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/074fb-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19305\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The cable-car and the view from the top<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, if you&#8217;re not much of a serous birder, <strong>it&#8217;s definitely worth walking ten minutes down the valley out of town and paying your 10.000 to visit the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock lek<\/strong>&#8230;&#8221;what?&#8221; I hear you ask! This unusual and uncommon bird is bright red, and has a wonderful habit of gathering together at dawn and dusk to &#8216;lek&#8217;&#8230;which basically means jump up and down making mad noises in the hope of attracting a mate. <strong>Jardin might well be the best place in South America to guarantee a fantastic sighting of these often elusive birds<\/strong>&#8230;so make the effort and go and see them!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19306\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19306\" style=\"width: 781px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/05\/a-visit-to-jardin-antioquia\/editfb\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19306\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19306\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/EditFB.jpg\" alt=\"Andean cock of the rock Jardin\" width=\"781\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/EditFB.jpg 781w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/EditFB-293x300.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 781px) 100vw, 781px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19306\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The magical Andean Cock-of-the-Rock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The town itself is a delight, especially in the evenings<\/strong>, when (unlike many little towns I&#8217;ve visited) the main square is full of little table and chairs, and people sit out in the cool Antioquia evening for a bunch of beers or maybe a coffee. <strong>The atmosphere is wonderful<\/strong>; I would happily spend weeks in Jardin just to sit out on that plaza every evening. In the daytime, the main attraction is just wandering the old colonial streets, along with<strong> a visit to the Clara Rojas Pelaez House Museum on the main square<\/strong>: for a small donation, the delightfully eccentric curator will take you on a tour of the house, which is <strong>especially interesting for its collection of old photos of the town<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19307\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19307\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/05\/a-visit-to-jardin-antioquia\/004fb\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19307\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19307\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/004fb.jpg\" alt=\"Jardin Antioquia\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/004fb.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/004fb-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19307\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chairs on the plaza in Jardin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to get there:<\/strong> Getting to Jardin is a little long-winded but wonderfully easy: first get yourself to Medellin. That&#8217;s the really easy bit! Then make your way to <strong>the southern terminal in Medellin and seek out the information windows of either Transporte Suroeste Antioqueno or Rapido Ochoa<\/strong>: check the bus times (each company has 6 daily departures, spread over the day), pay your <strong>18.000 COP (one-way cost)<\/strong>, and get going&#8230;<strong>I&#8217;d recommend trying to score a window seat on the left-hand side of the bus on your way there<\/strong>, and vice-versa on the way back: the views over the green valleys of Antioquia are beautiful, and a seat on this side has the most consistent views throughout the<strong> 4 hour journey.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19308\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19308\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/05\/a-visit-to-jardin-antioquia\/004fb-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19308\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19308\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/004fb1.jpg\" alt=\"Jardin Antioquia\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/004fb1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/004fb1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19308\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jardin seen from the surrounding hiking trails<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where to stay in Jardin:<\/strong>\u00a0You have several options here &#8211; the town still doesn&#8217;t have a properly budget backpacker hostel, but<strong> there are many hotels and guesthouses dotted around the town<\/strong>. My friend and I (on account of busy holiday hotels) stayed in La Casona hotel, just half a block from the main square: it was basic, but the room was comfortable and well-appointed (<strong>price: 100.000 for a double and single bed on holidays, and 60.000 for the same normally<\/strong>).
