With it&#8217;s breathtaking <strong>&#8216;Sea of Seven Colors&#8217;<\/strong>, rich cultural heritage and marvelous diving and snorkeling opportunities<strong>, San Andres is a highly popular holiday destination for Colombians<\/strong>. However, with the rise in budget airlines such as Viva Colombia, <strong>San Andres is becoming increasingly popular as a traveler&#8217;s and backpacker&#8217;s destination as well.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19262\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19262\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/05\/san-andres-a-travelers-guide\/084-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19262\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19262\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/084.jpg\" alt=\"San Andres Colombia\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/084.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/084-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19262\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The calm blue waters of San Andres<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>How to get there&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>San Andres is only really accessible by plane, but that&#8217;s alright, as <strong>there are many flights to the island with a variety of operators<\/strong>: LAN, COPA, Avianca and Viva Colombia all fly to the island from Bogota on a daily basis, and COPA operate one daily flight from Cartagena. <strong>Prices vary, but if you avoid booking on a Colombia national holiday<\/strong>, and try and travel during the week you can get especially good deals, with <strong>return flight prices as low as $100.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19263\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19263\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/05\/san-andres-a-travelers-guide\/attachment\/0701\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19263\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19263\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/0701.jpg\" alt=\"San Andres Colombia\" width=\"800\" height=\"473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/0701.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/0701-300x177.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19263\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sadly, you can&#8217;t catch this ship home&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Where to stay&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>San Andres, unlike nearby Providencia, is geared up for mass tourism<\/strong>; most of the island is geared towards package tourism, and large hotel chains and operators are dominant. However,<strong> there are a number of small, family-run guesthouses<\/strong> around the island as well. <strong>For backpackers though, El Viajero Hostel is a good option<\/strong>. With dorms at 40.000 COP (with bathrooms and air-con), a bed is a good value for San Andres. It&#8217;s not the cosiest option, but y<strong>ou&#8217;ll be spending all your time out and about anyway!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19264\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19264\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/05\/san-andres-a-travelers-guide\/133-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19264\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19264\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/133.jpg\" alt=\"El Acuario San Andres\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/133.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/133-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19264\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The crystalline waters of the Aquarium<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>What to do&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is where it get&#8217;s interesting! <strong>San Andres is full of wonderful activities to keep you busy<\/strong> for as long as you choose to stay. The more active can dive at one of the islands many excellent sites (including several wreck dives), <strong>enjoy a day&#8217;s snorkeling at El Acuario<\/strong> (a return boat trip costs 10.000 COP; when they advise you to wear water-shoes, listen! There are sea urchins everywhere), rent a jet-ski, go kite-surfing&#8230;the list goes on. <strong>Just don&#8217;t bother with the manta ray experience<\/strong>: when I was snorkeling at the Aquarium, a ray swan into the area, and was immediately corralled by an opportunistic local for &#8216;fun&#8217; photos with the tourists &#8211; <strong>the poor creature was surrounded by people, grabbed and moved around<\/strong>, and, when it made an effort to swim away, dragged back into the circle. It was an example of mass tourism at it&#8217;s worst, and I highly recommend not bothering! <strong>Otherwise, San Andres&#8217; underwater world is a paradise waiting to be explored.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19265\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19265\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/05\/san-andres-a-travelers-guide\/126-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19265\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19265\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/126.jpg\" alt=\"Manta rays San Andres\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/126.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/126-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19265\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Spot the clearly distressed manta ray&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For those with less energy,<strong> renting a golf-cart (80.000 for a full day) and driving around the island<\/strong> is a wonderful way to experience the different beaches and attractions all around the island &#8211; <strong>the &#8216;Hoyo Soplador,&#8217; a blowhole-like spot<\/strong> on the south coast of the island; Morgan&#8217;s Cave, where Henry Morgan is supposed to have hidden his treasure; <strong>Rocky Cay, a lovely little island<\/strong> that can be walked to from the shore along a sandbank. Driving around the island non-stop would take about 3 hours, but<strong> you really need a whole day to take your time and enjoy it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19267\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19267\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/05\/san-andres-a-travelers-guide\/068-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19267\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19267\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/068.jpg\" alt=\"San Andres Colombia\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/068.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/068-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19267\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Delicious fresh, fried fish<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>What to eat<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">When it comes to food, <strong>San Andres can be a little tricky for the traveler on a really tight budget<\/strong>; the island&#8217;s excellent fresh fish and seafood doesn&#8217;t come cheap, but it&#8217;s worth a little treat for a few days, as the food really is great. During my weekend on San Andres <strong>I enjoyed fresh fried fish, cazuela de mariscos, ceviche, mouth-watering shrimp<\/strong>&#8230;None of it was cheap (30.000 for a fried fish, 40.000 a cazuela), but it was all amazing! <strong>The main town has budget eating spots for fast-food<\/strong> and sandwiches, but it&#8217;s not quite the same!
