Our Top 5&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Following on from <a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/04\/casa-elemento-in-minca-the-best-hostel-view-in-colombia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">yesterday&#8217;s post about Casa Elemento hostel in Minca<\/a>, which I declared has the best hostel view in Colombia, I got to thinking about what it is that makes a really great hostel&#8230;sure, there&#8217;s things like <strong>value for money, good service and an easy booking procedure<\/strong>, but these are standard requirements in most service industries. I&#8217;m talking about those extra things that turn a good hostel into one that you recommended far and wide, <strong>the kind of hostel that becomes an attraction to see in a town<\/strong>, not just a place to get some sleep. So <strong>here are my personal top 5 requirements for a truly great hostel&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13961\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13961\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/03\/top-5-colombian-hostels\/la-casa-de-francois\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-13961\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13961\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/La-Casa-de-Francois.jpg\" alt=\"La Casa de Francois\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/La-Casa-de-Francois.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/La-Casa-de-Francois-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13961\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The dorm room at La Case de Francois, San Agustin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>1. An amazing communal area&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This might seem like an obvious first choice, but you&#8217;d be surprised how many hostels seem to think this just means a couch or two, and perhaps a dining table. These things are important, but <strong>I&#8217;m talking about a truly memorable area where visitors can make the most of the social benefits<\/strong> that come from choosing to stay in hostels. Good examples include Parklife Hostel in Popayan, with it&#8217;s large open communal area, filled with beanbags and illuminated by amble light from overhead windows. Or places like <strong>Santa Marta&#8217;s Dreamer Hostel with it&#8217;s pool\/bar\/games area<\/strong>. Hostels are meant to be sociable and an excellent communal area greases the wheels of conversation and <strong>helps make making new friends easy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19190\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19190\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/04\/what-makes-a-great-hostel-our-top-5\/002new\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19190\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19190\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/002new.jpg\" alt=\"Parklife Hostel Popayan\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/002new.jpg 600w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/002new-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19190\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Parklife&#8217;s excellent common area<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>2. Pets!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not to get all &#8220;Instagram-cats-are-super-cute&#8221; here, but <strong>having animals in a hostel can really improve people&#8217;s perceptions of the place<\/strong>. Loads of studies have shown that people relax more around animals and one of the keys to a great hostel experience is relaxation, right?! So a few lazy and friendly dogs and cats around the place is a great bonus. <strong>Think La Pinta in Bogota with their 2 friendly labradors, Parklife&#8217;s insanely fat cat Sushi<\/strong>, or the menagerie of cats, dogs and horses at La Casa de Francois in San Agustin.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19191\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19191\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/04\/what-makes-a-great-hostel-our-top-5\/sushi\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19191\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19191\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/sushi.jpg\" alt=\"Parklife Hostel Popayan\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/sushi.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/sushi-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19191\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sushi the cat from Parklife (looking less fat than I remember) [Photo: Parklife Hostel]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>3. Food and Drink<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;m not asking for a nightclub\/5* Restaurant<\/strong> here, just the option to have a few beers and perhaps a sandwich or breakfast. This doesn&#8217;t apply to all hostel &#8211; <strong>location means a great deal, so a place surrounded by good food places doesn&#8217;t need this as much<\/strong>; however, for many people it makes a huge difference to be able to grab a simple bite to eat in the evening, <strong>especially after a tiring day-trip for instance<\/strong>. Activities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>OK, so this isn&#8217;t a holiday camp, we don&#8217;t need group bingo and kid&#8217;s clubs; but<strong> it&#8217;s a nice touch to offer guests communal activities at least a few nights a week<\/strong> to help to add more value to their stay. El Viajero in Cali offers free salsa classes and dance nights, The Dreamer has a full programme of pool tournaments, quizzes and football games, La Pinta has a good weekly BBQ&#8230;<strong>things like this just make hostel evenings a bit more of an event, and can be a blessing for solo travelers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>5. Hammocks!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s just that simple prospective-hostel-owners: <strong>string up hammocks every which-way, and I&#8217;m yours!<\/strong> There is nothing more pleasant after a long day of doing touristy stuff than relaxing with a book\/beer in a well-strung hammock. Please take not &#8211; <strong>1 hammock to support 30 backpackers\u00a0<em>is not sufficient!\u00a0<\/em>A ratio of 3:1<\/strong> of people to hammocks is desirable at least!
