{"id":17834,"date":"2015-03-25T11:25:48","date_gmt":"2015-03-25T16:25:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/?p=17834"},"modified":"2016-07-15T12:14:10","modified_gmt":"2016-07-15T17:14:10","slug":"top-5-colombian-coastal-foods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/03\/top-5-colombian-coastal-foods\/","title":{"rendered":"Top 5 Colombian Coastal Foods"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I recently spent some time in the tiny Pacific jungle village of San Cipriano in Valle del Cauca; it might not be quite on the coast, but <strong>the menus are dominated by Pacific coast seafood<\/strong>, as the closest major settlement is the coastal city of Buenaventura. This got me thinking about Colombian cuisine (which is rarely held up as the world&#8217;s best to be fair), and how much <strong>incredible, fresh, and unique seafood is available in the only country in South America with both Pacific and Atlantic coastlines<\/strong>. I love fish and seafood more than any other kind, and so here are my Top 5 Colombian coastal foods&#8230;<strong>buen provecho!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Cazuela de Mariscos<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This list is in no particular order&#8230;but <strong>this is totally number 1!<\/strong> This thick, seafood stew is a staple on the coast in both coastal regions of Colombia, and is especially connected with Cartagena, Barranquilla and Santa Marta. <strong>A\u00a0<em>cazuela\u00a0<\/em>I ate in Camarones in La Guajira was among the best meals I have ever eaten<\/strong>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/09\/colombia-food-tour-anthony-bourdain-style\/\" target=\"_blank\">Anthony Bourdain concurred when he came to visit<\/a>. It usually contains lobster, shrimp, prawns, squid and white fish&#8230;.<strong>I can&#8217;t do it justice, just taste it!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17837\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17837\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/03\/top-5-colombian-coastal-foods\/cazuela-de-mariscos\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17837\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17837\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Cazuela-de-Mariscos.jpg\" alt=\"Cazuela de Mariscos\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Cazuela-de-Mariscos.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Cazuela-de-Mariscos-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17837\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cazuela de Mariscos<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Encocado de Muchilla<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I just had this dish for the first time in San Cipriano&#8230;and, just wow!\u00a0<em>Muchilla\u00a0<\/em>is <strong>basically like a giant crayfish\/mini-lobster<\/strong>, and the dish I had served a bunch of them whole in a stunning coconutty broth, seasoned liberally with herbs. You pull them out ans crack them open and the meat is just like lobster. At 35.000COP for the dish it&#8217;s a little on the pricey side, but worth it for a treat!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17836\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17836\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/03\/top-5-colombian-coastal-foods\/encocado-de-muchilla\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17836\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17836\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Encocado-de-Muchilla.jpg\" alt=\"Encocado de Muchilla\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Encocado-de-Muchilla.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Encocado-de-Muchilla-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17836\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Encocado de Muchilla<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Fried fish, cocount rice and\u00a0<em>patacones<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>costeno\u00a0<\/em>classic: a local, fresh fish (I like the red snapper), fried up and served with\u00a0<em>arroz de coco\u00a0<\/em>and a few\u00a0<em>patacones<\/em>. <strong>You find this available in the every coastal restaurant, but it&#8217;s best served on the beach<\/strong> &#8211; where you can pick your fish from a fresh platter, and have it served on a little beachside table <strong>with the Caribbean gently rolling in front of you&#8230;paradise!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17838\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17838\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/03\/top-5-colombian-coastal-foods\/fresh-fish-colombia\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17838\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17838\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Fresh-Fish-Colombia.jpg\" alt=\"Fresh Fish Colombia\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Fresh-Fish-Colombia.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Fresh-Fish-Colombia-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17838\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">So&#8230;which one looks good to you?!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Ceviche<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I know, I know,\u00a0<em>ceviche\u00a0<\/em>is Peruvian&#8230;but <strong>the Colombians have put their own little spin on this classic dish, and essentially turned it into at &#8217;70s shrimp cocktail!<\/strong> It&#8217;s fresh prawns\/shrimp, served in a ketchup\/mayo sauce, seasoned with Tabasco for that extra spice. If that sounds like a perversion of a classic to you then fine, but <strong>if you just treat it like a unique dish in itself, it&#8217;s deliciousness is hard to argue with!<\/strong> Best tried in Cali and the Pacific region&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17839\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17839\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/03\/top-5-colombian-coastal-foods\/olympus-digital-camera-9\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17839\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17839\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Shrimp-Cocktail.jpg\" alt=\"Colombian Ceviche\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Shrimp-Cocktail.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Shrimp-Cocktail-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17839\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Colombian Ceviche&#8230;just kidding, this actually is a shrimp cocktail!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.\u00a0<em>Arepa de Huevo<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>OK, so it&#8217;s not fish&#8230;sue me! This spin on the\u00a0<em>arepa\u00a0<\/em>can be found all over Colombia, <strong>but it&#8217;s a\u00a0<em>costeno\u00a0<\/em>invention to begin with<\/strong>.
