{"id":17512,"date":"2015-02-16T09:30:46","date_gmt":"2015-02-16T14:30:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/?p=17512"},"modified":"2016-03-19T05:39:20","modified_gmt":"2016-03-19T10:39:20","slug":"the-trampoline-of-death-mocoa-to-pasto-on-colombias-most-dangerous-road","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/02\/the-trampoline-of-death-mocoa-to-pasto-on-colombias-most-dangerous-road\/","title":{"rendered":"The Trampoline of Death: Mocoa to Pasto on Colombia&#8217;s Most Dangerous Road"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/02\/the-end-of-the-world-in-mocoa\/\" target=\"_blank\">The End of the World<\/a>&#8216;, &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/02\/paway-centro-ecoturistico-amazonico-mocoa\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gateway to the Amazon<\/a>&#8216;&#8230;&#8217;The Trampoline of Death&#8217;; <strong>Mocoa does produce some dramatic names, doesn&#8217;t it?!<\/strong> But whilst the Trampoline of Death conjures up images of some nightmarish, dystopian children&#8217;s birthday party gone awry, it is in fact the &#8216;affectionate&#8217; (but not so much) nickname given to <strong>the road that connects the capital of the jungle department of Putumayo with it&#8217;s Andean\/Pacific neighbour, Narino.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17522\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17522\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/02\/the-trampoline-of-death-mocoa-to-pasto-on-colombias-most-dangerous-road\/004-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17522\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17522\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/004.jpg\" alt=\"Mocoa Bus Terminal\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/004.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/004-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17522\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Our vehicle for the next 5 hours&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This road is famously dangerous, and is <strong>often called the most dangerous road in the entire country<\/strong>, and one of the worst on the continent. Shrines to the lost litter the roadside, and people have <strong>a nerve-wracking habit of crossing themselves and offering up a small prayer<\/strong> when the bus begins to undertake it&#8217;s winding journey. I can only assume that the worst days of the Trampoline are behind it (it&#8217;s lost some of it&#8217;s bounce you might say) as, and with all due respect to those who have suffered from it&#8217;s more dangerous aspects,<strong> I have definitely experienced more dangerous-seeming conditions on other roads<\/strong>, and, perhaps due to it&#8217;s reputation, to me the bus-drivers seemed to be exercising plenty of caution negotiating it&#8217;s hairpin turns.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17523\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17523\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/02\/the-trampoline-of-death-mocoa-to-pasto-on-colombias-most-dangerous-road\/010-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17523\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17523\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/010.jpg\" alt=\"Trampoline of Death Colombia\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/010.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/010-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17523\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Off into the mountains we go&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To show due deference to both sides of the coin, <strong>the road is also often called one of the most beautiful in Colombia<\/strong>, and with this information I can only agree; the journey (particularly the 3 hour section coinciding with the most dangerous part) is absolutely breathtaking, and not just because of <strong>the steep climb from Mocoa&#8217;s 600 m.a.s.l. to well over 2,000.<\/strong> The road winds rapidly upwards through jungle to cloudforest and ultimately to\u00a0<em>paramo<\/em>, with mist-shrouded waterfalls seemingly tumbling from the forest at every turn, and often engulfing the rough, unpaved road itself in their icy waters. At the highest section of the road <strong>you are driving blind as it were, as the clouds completely cover the road,<\/strong> and make the advancing headlights of an oncoming truck the only clue as to the way forwards.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17524\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17524\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/02\/the-trampoline-of-death-mocoa-to-pasto-on-colombias-most-dangerous-road\/attachment\/014\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17524\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17524\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/014.jpg\" alt=\"Trampoline of Death Colombia\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/014.jpg 600w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/014-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17524\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">We&#8217;ll be driving through that waterfall in a few minutes&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the other key point about this road;<strong> those oncoming headlights are just that&#8230;oncoming!<\/strong> The road is a simple, one-lane affair, with nothing but some small metal barriers to prevent a vehicle veering towards the edge. Therefore, <strong>when a huge oil truck does round the corner the driver is forced to sharply apply the brakes<\/strong> and reverse until a suitable passing spot is established. This, as well as the area&#8217;s proclivity for landslides, is <strong>the root of it&#8217;s dangerous reputation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17525\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17525\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/02\/the-trampoline-of-death-mocoa-to-pasto-on-colombias-most-dangerous-road\/048-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17525\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17525\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/048.jpg\" alt=\"Trampoline of Death Colombia\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/048.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/048-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17525\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Truck oncoming!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But there&#8217;s beauty in danger it&#8217;s said, and this road lives up to that phrase (<strong>which, even though I may have just coined it, seems appropriate<\/strong>); as the mountains loom, large and green and shrouded by mist, in the never-ending mountainous distance, I honestly can&#8217;t think of any road I&#8217;d rather be on. Eventually it all eases up, <strong>two lanes appear, and we pass through Sibundoy, out of Putumayo, past the Laguna de la Cocha, and into Pasto.<\/strong> But that fabulous first three hours remains fresh in my memory.
