It&#8217;s remarkable that in <strong>just 12 hours on a night bus from the Andean chill of the &#8216;refrigerator&#8217;<\/strong> (as people often call Bogota) you can reach the humid green of the Amazon basin: monkeys, macaws, jungle and &#8216;falls&#8230;all just a night-bus away! Anyway, I digress: <strong>one of the highlights of the trip has been a visit to the\u00a0Paway Centro Ecoturistico Amaz\u00f3nico&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17500\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17500\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/02\/paway-centro-ecoturistico-amazonico-mocoa\/attachment\/070\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17500\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17500\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/070.jpg\" alt=\"Paway Centro Ecoturistico Amaz\u00f3nico, Mocoa\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/070.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/070-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17500\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A resident parrot<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This center lies just about 5km from my hostel (Casa del Rio), which itself is only just outside Mocoa: <strong>take the Villagarzon road<\/strong> on any\u00a0<em>colectivo\u00a0<\/em>and jump out when you see the Paway sign just before a bridge over a large river. From there it&#8217;s a 15 minute hike along jungley river banks until you arrive (<strong>one steep uphill at the end, and pretty muddy: dress accordingly<\/strong>). Once you&#8217;re at the gate, ring the bell (actually it&#8217;s a hollow metal object on string with a metal bar to bang it with), <strong>pay your 4.000COP entry fee\/donation and enjoy!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17501\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17501\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/02\/paway-centro-ecoturistico-amazonico-mocoa\/125-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17501\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17501\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/125.jpg\" alt=\"Paway Centro Ecoturistico Amaz\u00f3nico, Mocoa\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/125.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/125-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17501\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Meeting Chonta the monkey<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve gotten ahead of myself: <strong>what is the\u00a0Paway Centro Ecoturistico Amaz\u00f3nico<\/strong>, right? Well, the center exists to allow visitors to experience some of the wonders of the Amazon and its wildlife at close quarters, as well as to <strong>educate them in conservation, ecology and sustainable development<\/strong>. It also serves as home to many rescued animals and birds, a number of which are being <strong>rehabilitated for an eventual return to the Colombian wild.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17502\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17502\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/02\/paway-centro-ecoturistico-amazonico-mocoa\/attachment\/043\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17502\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17502\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/043.jpg\" alt=\"Paway Centro Ecoturistico Amaz\u00f3nico, Mocoa\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/043.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/043-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17502\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A resident of the butterfly house<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There are macaws, various species of parrot (one of whom has &#8216;<em>quiere cacao&#8217;\u00a0<\/em>down to a tee!), <strong>a variety of small and large monkeys<\/strong> and forest-dwelling mammals&#8230;as well as the young star of the show, <strong>Chonta the Woolly Monkey<\/strong>, who, although too familiar with humans to be rehabilitated, is an affectionate, woolly bungle of joy, and <strong>will proceed to swing on you, sit on your head, groom you<\/strong>, and generally make an adorable nuisance of herself!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17503\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17503\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/02\/paway-centro-ecoturistico-amazonico-mocoa\/attachment\/129\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17503\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17503\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/129.jpg\" alt=\"Paway Centro Ecoturistico Amaz\u00f3nico, Mocoa\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/129.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/129-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17503\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chonta, making an adorable nuisance of herself!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There is also a\u00a0<strong>fantastic butterfly house and a lab where Amazon butterflies are studied<\/strong>\u00a0and bred; you can observe the fully grown specimens in all their multicolored glory, as well as inspecting the cocoons, pupae and larvae of the variety of species bred here.\u00a0<strong>Along with the mammals and butterflies there is also a little pond for several Amazonian turtles<\/strong>, who make an especially sweet addition to the menagerie assembled here. Also (just one more!) there is\u00a0<strong>a massive treehouse and several cabins where it is possible to stay<\/strong>, surrounded by wildlife; just don&#8217;t let Chonta in, I don&#8217;t imagine she&#8217;d make a good roommate!<\/p>\n<p>I would highly recommend a visit to Mocoa, if <strong>not just for the waterfalls and jungle<\/strong>, then for the\u00a0Paway Centro Ecoturistico Amaz\u00f3nico, and <strong>the chance to interact and help protect arguably Colombia&#8217;s most essential patrimony<\/strong>: it&#8217;s fantastic and varied wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>Chris<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; I&#8217;ve been spending some time down in the jungle over the past few days, getting to know Mocoa (the capital of Putumayo department) and it&#8217;s surrounding jungles and waterfalls.
