A must-do activity in Manizales is to organize a tour into the Los Nevados National Park, to get <strong>close up views of the aforementioned volcanoes, as well as beautiful Andean ecosystems<\/strong>, filled with mammals, birds and plants.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>7. Tierradentro<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17442\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17442\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/01\/top-10-colombian-travel-destinations-for-2015-part-2\/tierradentro\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17442\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17442\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Tierradentro.jpg\" alt=\"Tierradentro Colombia\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Tierradentro.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Tierradentro-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17442\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A tomb in Tierradentro<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Nearby San Agustin might be <strong>Colombia&#8217;s most well-known and iconic ancient archaeological site<\/strong>, but Tierradentro remains much less visited, and just as historically interesting, whilst being set within the spectacular mountain scenery of the department of Cauca. <strong>Famous for it&#8217;s pre-Columbian tombs (known as &#8216;hypogea&#8217;), the area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/strong>; and well-worth a visit for those interested in \u00a0experiencing the ancient history of Colombia.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>8. San Antero Donkey Festival<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14422\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14422\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/04\/san-antero-donkey-festival\/donkey-pope\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14422\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14422\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Donkey-Pope.jpg\" alt=\"San Antero donkey\" width=\"800\" height=\"608\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Donkey-Pope.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Donkey-Pope-300x228.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14422\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Donkey as the pope&#8230;I think&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Whilst not exactly as iconic as the celebrated Barranquilla carnival, or indeed many of the other important festivals celebrated in Colombia, <strong>this bizarre and unique annual festival<\/strong> (which takes place every Easter) in the coastal town of San Antero is definitely an experience not to be missed; one which you&#8217;ll surely be <strong>recounting to anyone who&#8217;ll listen in years to come!<\/strong> It&#8217;s basically exactly like it sounds: there&#8217;s a donkey parade, donkey costume contest, and king and queen donkey.<strong> Essentially an equine Woodstock&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>9. Norte de Santander<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17448\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17448\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/01\/top-10-colombian-travel-destinations-for-2015-part-2\/attachment\/17448\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17448\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17448\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Panoramica_de_Pamplona.jpg\" alt=\"Pamplona Norte de Santander\" width=\"800\" height=\"462\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Panoramica_de_Pamplona.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Panoramica_de_Pamplona-300x173.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17448\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The town of Pamplona in Norte de Santander<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Okay, so this is a whole department, and naturally we&#8217;re not recommending the entire place, but <strong>this region bordering Venezuela remains under-explored by travelers<\/strong>, which is a shame as it contains a number of gorgeous colonial towns, all set in beautiful mountainous scenery. Particular highlights include the town of Ocana, and <strong>lovely colonial architecture of Pamplona<\/strong>, as well as many stunning mountain lakes offering water-sports. If you&#8217;re looking for <strong>an &#8216;off-the-beaten-track&#8217; department in 2015<\/strong>, then this is it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>10. Mompos<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17408\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17408\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/01\/colombia-photo-gallery-mompos-and-the-magdalena\/attachment\/151\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17408\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17408\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/151.jpg\" alt=\"Church Mompos\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/151.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/151-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17408\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepci\u00f3n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We&#8217;ve talked about this town many times before, but now is the time to visit this colonial gem on the Magdalena River following <strong>a fantastic development of the town&#8217;s main square<\/strong>. Mompos is overflowing with history, surrounded by spectacular natural scenery, and, thanks to the new developments, now boasts a relaxed, <strong>almost Mediterranean atmosphere in the balmy evenings<\/strong>.
