As we mentioned in this post last year&#8230;<strong>why not try something more fun and achievable and travel Colombia&#8230;?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You could (and should) hit up the usual popular destinations like <strong>Tayrona, Salento, Cartagena and Medellin<\/strong>, but why not also include some slightly different spots? To clarify, this list isn&#8217;t meant to be &#8217;10 Alternative Colombian Tourist Spots&#8217; list, it&#8217;s just <strong>a list with some ideas for a variety of interesting and lesser-visited places<\/strong> to consider for this year. <strong>So, without further ado, here are the first 5&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em\">1. Valledupar<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17368\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17368\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/01\/colombia-photo-gallery-valledupar\/attachment\/090\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17368\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17368\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/090.jpg\" alt=\"Rio Badilla Valledupar\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/090.jpg 600w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/090-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17368\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rio Badilla near Valledupar<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With it&#8217;s prime location <strong>sandwiched between the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and Serrania de Perija<\/strong> mountain ranges, the home of\u00a0<em>vallenato\u00a0<\/em>is a must-visit city for anyone fond of music, cultural heritage and natural beauty. <strong>The city is generally left off most people&#8217;s Caribbean itineraries<\/strong>, which is a shame, as the warmth of the people and the relatively small size of the city makes a visit a very pleasurable experience. The <strong>surrounding rivers, mountains and indigenous villages make Valledupar a truly wonderful place to visit.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>2. Around Bogota&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16853\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16853\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/11\/hiking-in-colombia-la-chorrera-waterfall\/attachment\/073\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16853\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16853\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/073.jpg\" alt=\"La Chorrera Waterfall Colombia\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/073.jpg 600w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/073-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16853\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Getting wet at La Chorrera<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chingaza National Park, the cloud forests of Chicaque, the largest\u00a0<em>paramo\u00a0<\/em>in the world at Sumapaz, Colombia&#8217;s tallest waterfall La Chorrera<\/strong>&#8230;use 2015 to fully experience the natural wonders just hours from the nation&#8217;s capital. A visit to Bogota doesn&#8217;t just have to be culture anymore; too many people come here with the idea that a stop-off in Bogota is just an excuse to &#8216;party&#8217; for a few days and visit the occasional cultural site, but <strong>the spectacular Andean surroundings of the city offer so much more<\/strong>: make 2015 the year you discover them!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>3. Mocoa &amp; Putumayo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17430\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17430\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/01\/top-10-colombian-travel-destinations-for-2015-part-1\/fin_del_mundo_mocoa_putumayo\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17430\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17430\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Fin_del_mundo_mocoa_putumayo.jpg\" alt=\"Waterfall Mocoa Putumayo\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Fin_del_mundo_mocoa_putumayo.jpg 600w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Fin_del_mundo_mocoa_putumayo-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17430\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A waterfall near Mocoa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mocoa is the <strong>best way to visit the Amazon without getting on a plane<\/strong>. Located near the Ecuador border, the town is a gateway to waterfalls, jungle, rivers, and wildlife in <strong>a little-known and under-explored department.\u00a0<\/strong>There isn&#8217;t much to do other than<strong> enjoy your natural surroundings<\/strong>, swim in rivers and waterfalls, watch out for birds and monkeys and&#8230;actually, that&#8217;s about it! <strong>Mocoa also combines pretty well with a visit to number 4&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>4. Popayan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17426\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17426\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/01\/top-10-colombian-travel-destinations-for-2015-part-1\/popayan-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17426\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17426\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Popayan.jpg\" alt=\"Popayan\" width=\"800\" height=\"526\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Popayan.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Popayan-300x197.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17426\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Popayan with Purace volcano visible in the background<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A <strong>UNESCO recognized city for it&#8217;s gastronomy<\/strong>, famous for it&#8217;s white-walled colonial buildings and Easter celebrations, the capital of Cauca department is fast becoming <strong>a must-visit city<\/strong> on any Colombia traveler&#8217;s checklist. The <strong>nearby Purace National Park<\/strong> with it&#8217;s condors, volcanoes and incredible hiking adds to Popayan&#8217;s appeal.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>5. Sapzurro &amp; Capurgana<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17428\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17428\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2015\/01\/top-10-colombian-travel-destinations-for-2015-part-1\/panama\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17428\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17428\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Panama.jpg\" alt=\"Colombia to Panama\" width=\"800\" height=\"786\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Panama.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Panama-300x294.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17428\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hiking into Panama from Sapzurro<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Along with the nearby (larger) town of Capurgana, <strong>Sapzurro marks the end of the road (so to speak) before Colombia meets Panama<\/strong>. A tiny little village with a population of less than 500, Sapzurro is a true gem: sparkling Caribbean waters and a <strong>huge reef full of fish for diving and snorkeling<\/strong>, lush jungle surroundings filled with toucans and monkeys, and fresh seafood on every corner. Plus, you can walk over a nearby hill to Panama, for another great beach; <strong>walking out of a continent is always a fun and unique experience<\/strong>.
