This year it is all brand new as I spend the holidays in my new adopted home of Colombia! So how different could it be? Well <strong>here is a breakdown of North vs. South &#8211; USA vs. Colombia<\/strong> when it comes to \u201cla Navidad\u201d. I gotta say, Colombia might just take the cake on this one.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17231\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17231\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/12\/christmas-in-colombia-vs-christmas-in-usa\/luces-colombia-from-google-labeled-for-reuse\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17231\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17231\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Luces-Colombia-from-Google-Labeled-for-Reuse.jpg\" alt=\"Colombian Christmas Lights\" width=\"800\" height=\"531\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Luces-Colombia-from-Google-Labeled-for-Reuse.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Luces-Colombia-from-Google-Labeled-for-Reuse-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17231\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Colombian Christmas Lights<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Christmas Lights<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>USA:<\/strong> String up the icicle lights, <strong>maybe a blow up snowman and a wreath<\/strong> on the door; we certainly have our love for decorating the home for the holidays. Even some go all out timing a light show to music.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Colombia:<\/strong> A whole new level I must say. Huge business headquarters, commercial centers, entire neighborhoods, every park, traffic circle, and <strong>just streets covered in lights of every variety&#8230;basically not a square inch left unadorned!<\/strong> Medell\u00edn is particularly famous for it\u2019s light displays but even small towns like many in Boyac\u00e1 decorate like there is no tomorrow. <strong>You\u2019ll feel like a little kid again!<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17232\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17232\" style=\"width: 589px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/12\/christmas-in-colombia-vs-christmas-in-usa\/xmas-trees-usa\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17232\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17232\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Xmas-trees-USA.jpg\" alt=\"Colombian Christmas Tree\" width=\"589\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Xmas-trees-USA.jpg 589w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Xmas-trees-USA-220x300.jpg 220w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 589px) 100vw, 589px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17232\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cutting down the tree&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Christmas Trees<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>USA:<\/strong> Well there are a lot of ways you can do Christmas trees, <strong>but a favorite tradition of mine is trekking out out to the tree farm with the saw<\/strong>, arguing endlessly over whether it should be a fat, tall or Charlie Brown tree and finally chopping one down, <strong>\u201cTIMBER!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Colombia:<\/strong> Down in the tropics, it is easiest to buy and deck out a \u201cfake\u201d Christmas tree. But that doesn\u2019t mean there is any cutting corners on the decorations. <strong>Walking around Bogot\u00e1, practically every window frames an illuminated \u201carbolito\u201d!<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17233\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17233\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/12\/christmas-in-colombia-vs-christmas-in-usa\/family-tracey-xmas\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17233\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17233\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Family-Tracey-Xmas.jpg\" alt=\"Family Christmas Colombia\" width=\"480\" height=\"507\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Family-Tracey-Xmas.jpg 480w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Family-Tracey-Xmas-284x300.jpg 284w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17233\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Family Christmas<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Days of Celebration<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>USA:<\/strong> The official holiday season kicks off with Black Friday: <strong>shopping as if it were a professional sport.<\/strong> On Christmas Eve, there is often a family gathering, perhaps an evening visit to church and then off to bed for the kiddies, after <strong>setting out cookies for Santa with \u201cvisions of sugarplums\u201d in our heads.<\/strong> Christmas day is for attacking the presents, more family gatherings and food. A whirlwind of holiday cheer and then it is another year of waiting.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Colombia:<\/strong> Talk about spreading out your holiday as long as possible. <strong>Decorations were up starting in mid October this year!<\/strong> There is the D\u00eda de las Velitas where families set out candles beautifully illuminating the streets. Then starts the \u201cNovena\u201d on December 16 and lasting until Christmas Eve. <strong>It consists of 9 days of party hopping, eating, drinking, singing<\/strong> and, oh yeah, learning about the birth of Jesus. The big event is really Christmas Eve. Families gather and stay up until midnight when presents are opened and the party often lasts until sunrise! <strong>So, Christmas Day is really for sleeping.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17234\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17234\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/12\/christmas-in-colombia-vs-christmas-in-usa\/xmas-cookies-usa\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17234\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17234\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Xmas-cookies-USA.jpg\" alt=\"Colombian Christmas Food\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Xmas-cookies-USA.jpg 600w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Xmas-cookies-USA-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17234\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">US Christmas cookies<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Traditional Christmas Grub<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>USA:<\/strong>\u00a0Christmas cookies, gingerbread men, fruit cakes and\u00a0<strong>then a nice big dinner or two<\/strong>. Likely to gain a Holiday pudge in the weeks around Christmas.\u00a0<strong>That\u2019s what New Year\u2019s resolutions are for, right?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Colombia:<\/strong>\u00a0Get ready to chow down on the best:\u00a0<strong>bu\u00f1uelos,<\/strong>\u00a0a sweet and slightly cheese flavored donut ball&#8230;it\u2019s delicious trust me;\u00a0<strong>Natilla<\/strong>, a sweet custard using\u00a0<strong>panela (Colombian cane sugar)<\/strong>, get ready for a sugar rush; Tamales; Figs in sweet syrup&#8230;and\u00a0<strong>there are plenty of excuses to eat, so you can get your fill!<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17235\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17235\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/12\/christmas-in-colombia-vs-christmas-in-usa\/colombian-xmas-food\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17235\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17235\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Colombian-Xmas-Food.jpg\" alt=\"Colombian Christmas Food\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Colombian-Xmas-Food.jpg 600w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Colombian-Xmas-Food-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17235\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Colombian Christmas Food<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Christmas songs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>USA:<\/strong> Jingle Bells, Frosty the Snowman, Silent Night and some more current hits like All I Want For Christmas Is You. <strong>Played over and over until sometimes you want to punch the radio<\/strong>, but holiday cheer none-the-less.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Colombia:<\/strong> The Villancicos are a collection of TONS of traditional Christmas carols are as part of the Novena.
