Although the man commonly known as \u2018The Liberator\u2019 was born in Venezuela (Caracas in 1783), <strong>many of Bolivar\u2019s greatest triumphs and disasters took place in what is now Colombia,<\/strong> during and after the Wars of Independence which have made him famous throughout the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With 2 countries named after him, countless towns, and virtually every square and plaza in the Latin America, his is a legacy that has stretched well beyond his death and will seemingly continue to do so. <strong>So here is how you can follow in the footsteps of the great man during your time in Colombia\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/follow-simon-bolivars-footsteps-in-colombia-5.jpg\" alt=\"Puente de Boyac\u00e1\" class=\"wp-image-27775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/follow-simon-bolivars-footsteps-in-colombia-5.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/follow-simon-bolivars-footsteps-in-colombia-5-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/follow-simon-bolivars-footsteps-in-colombia-5-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption>Puente de Boyac\u00e1<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tunja &amp; Puente de Boyaca<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was in Tunja, the capital of Boyac\u00e1 department, that Bolivar first received a military command in 1813, and it was at the nearby Puente de Boyaca where he fought the battle that has made him a military icon for many; marching his men over the Andes from Venezuela, in echoes of Hannibal, to strike a devastating blow for Spanish forces on August 7th, 1819.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tunja is a pretty, colonial town with plenty of history, and is the perfect base to visit the commemorative site of the battle at the nearby Puente.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/follow-simon-bolivars-footsteps-in-colombia-2.jpg\" alt=\"Simon Bolivar Mompos\" class=\"wp-image-27772\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/follow-simon-bolivars-footsteps-in-colombia-2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/follow-simon-bolivars-footsteps-in-colombia-2-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption>\u201cIf to Caracas I owe my life, then to Mompos I owe my glory\u201d.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mompos<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bolivar arrived in the Magdalena River port of Mompos in 1812, when it remained a thriving, important Colombian town. During his time there<strong>, Bolivar recruited virtually every able-bodied man\u00a0 (nearly 400 in number) for his wars of independence, and these men formed the base of his army which would win such decisive victories in Caracas<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His famous quote: \u201cIf to Caracas I owe my life, then to Mompos I owe my glory\u201d; adorns many statues of the Liberator in Mompos today, <strong>and the town itself is a paean to a lost period<\/strong>, with crumbling colonial buildings sitting along the stiflingly hot banks of the Magdalena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/quote-your-trip-to-colombia-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Visit one of the most historical towns in Colombia, Mompos.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/follow-simon-bolivars-footsteps-in-colombia-6.jpg\" alt=\"Quinta de Bolivar Bogot\u00e1\" class=\"wp-image-27776\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/follow-simon-bolivars-footsteps-in-colombia-6.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/follow-simon-bolivars-footsteps-in-colombia-6-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/follow-simon-bolivars-footsteps-in-colombia-6-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption>The Quinta de Bolivar in Bogot\u00e1<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bogot\u00e1<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following liberation, Bolivar ruled the then-named Gran Colombia from the current Colombian capital. Today, <strong>the Quinta is an excellent museum, dedicated to the final days of a man who shaped a continent. The bed he died in, the bathtub where he washed, and the stopped clock, marking the hour of his death<\/strong>, are all preserved in the original house where Bolivar drew his last breath.
