{"id":17060,"date":"2014-12-05T07:16:57","date_gmt":"2014-12-05T12:16:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/?p=17060"},"modified":"2016-03-18T07:33:44","modified_gmt":"2016-03-18T12:33:44","slug":"colombia-by-numbers-the-tallest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/12\/colombia-by-numbers-the-tallest\/","title":{"rendered":"Colombia by Numbers: The Tallest&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Colombia has a number of amazing statistics:<\/strong> some of the world&#8217;s greatest biodiversity, nearly 20% of all known bird species, the most amphibians, around half of all the known ecosystems on the planet. <strong>There are so many enviable numbers associated with Colombia<\/strong> that it&#8217;s tough to narrow anything down to one humble blog post, so we&#8217;re not going to try; instead, <strong>over the coming weeks we&#8217;re going to be breaking our adopted homeland down into numbers<\/strong> and facts, expressing the incredible realities that make Colombia so magical&#8230;<strong>This week: Colombia&#8217;s tallest, well&#8230;everything!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17067\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17067\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/12\/colombia-by-numbers-the-tallest\/073-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17067\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17067\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/073.jpg\" alt=\"Pico Colon Bolivar Colombia\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/073.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/073-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17067\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pico&#8217;s Colon and Bolivar<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Highest Mountain &#8211; Pico Cristobal Colon &amp; Pico Simon Bolivar<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re starting with a tie: these two giant peaks in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta range are <strong>almost exactly the same height at an estimated 5,700 meters<\/strong>. Both have permanent snowcaps and are located incredibly close to the Caribbean, which can make for some pretty unique vistas. <strong>The best way to see them is to hike up to the higher elevations<\/strong> of the Sierra early in the morning when they are less likely to be shrouded in cloud. Really lucky flyers can occasionally see the peaks in <strong>bright sun on a flight into Santa Marta&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17066\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17066\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/12\/colombia-by-numbers-the-tallest\/volcan_huila_9-12-2008_1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17066\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17066\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Volcan_Huila_9-12-2008_1.jpg\" alt=\"Nevado del Huila Colombia\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Volcan_Huila_9-12-2008_1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Volcan_Huila_9-12-2008_1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17066\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nevado del Huila<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Highest Volcano &#8211; Nevado del Huila<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>At 5,364 meters this volcano in Huila department is just about the highest in the country<\/strong> (narrowly beating Caldas&#8217; Nevado del Ruiz). It can be seen on a clear day from the city of Cali, and has shown signs of activity as recently as 2008 when it erupted, <strong>after laying dormant for almost 500 years<\/strong>. Visiting this volcano can be tricky due to this activity; maybe a volcano is one of those things better seen from a distance&#8230;<strong>like sharks and in-laws!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17065\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17065\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/12\/colombia-by-numbers-the-tallest\/080-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17065\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17065\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/080.jpg\" alt=\"Wax Palm Cocora\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/080.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/080-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17065\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A gigantic wax palm in Cocora Valley<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Tallest Tree &#8211; Quindio Wax Palm<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I&#8217;m cheating a bit with this on, because <strong>technically a palm isn&#8217;t a tree<\/strong>, but Colombia calls this endemic palm the national tree, so, as far as I&#8217;m concerned, they started it! These giant palms can tower over visitors to the Cocora Valley in Quindio <strong>at heights of up to 60 meters<\/strong>. They only grow wild in this one valley Colombia&#8217;s Coffee Region, and visitors can wander in peace among them&#8230;<strong>the only risk is neck pain!<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17064\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17064\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/12\/colombia-by-numbers-the-tallest\/colpatria_desde_la_cra_7\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17064\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17064\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Colpatria_desde_la_cra_7.jpg\" alt=\"Torre Colpatria Bogota\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Colpatria_desde_la_cra_7.jpg 600w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Colpatria_desde_la_cra_7-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17064\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Torre Colpatria, Bogota<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Tallest Building &#8211; Torre Colpatria<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Colombia isn&#8217;t exactly known for it&#8217;s massive skyscrapers; in fact, <strong>there is no building in the country that clears 200 meters<\/strong>. However, the title of Tallest Building is staying right here in Bogota, with the Torre Colpatria, which stands at 196 meters,<strong> just 4 meters higher than it&#8217;s closest challenger<\/strong>, the Centro de Comercio Internacional (also in the capital). The observation deck at Colpatria offers memorable views of the city, and <strong>the face of the building is illuminated at night.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17071\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17071\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/12\/colombia-by-numbers-the-tallest\/san_andes\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17071\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17071\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/San_and\u00e9s.jpg\" alt=\"San and\u00e9s colombia\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/San_and\u00e9s.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/San_and\u00e9s-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17071\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A high town in Santander (not Vetas!)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Highest Town &#8211; Vetas, Santander<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Being an Andean country <strong>Colombia has a large number of pretty high-altitude towns and cities<\/strong>, but the title of highest goes to the little town of Vetas, in the north-east of Santander department. With a population of just over 1,700 people, <strong>Vetas is hardly a well-known or large place\u00a0<\/strong>(we couldn&#8217;t even find a good photo of the place to use!), but at an altitude of 3,350 meters-above-sea-level, it clearly holds the title of highest town.
