I however recently decided to escape to a region actually quite close to Bogot\u00e1 called Boyac\u00e1. What does it have going for it? Well, it is <strong>home to some of the highest, most-stunning mountains in the country, lots of onions, delicious cheese, a world class cyclist<\/strong>&#8230;ok, ok, but what can you <em>do<\/em> there? Well, this is just the place for <strong>that relaxing \u201cnot-doing-anything\u201d type of travel<\/strong>, that is a fantastic way to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of city life; all in <strong>a quaint, genuine town amongst beautiful rolling mountains<\/strong>. That wonderful little town is called Mongu\u00ed and it is just waiting to charm you.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16881\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16881\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/11\/escape-the-city-in-mongui-boyaca\/img_4805\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16881\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16881\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_4805.jpg\" alt=\"Mongui Colombia\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_4805.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_4805-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16881\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The countryside surrounding Mongui<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Mongu\u00ed is found just 4-5 hours by bus to the north of Bogot\u00e1<\/strong>. Our little vehicle climbed up, up and up to the town at 2,900 meters above sea level. This altitude means<strong> you won\u2019t be sunbathing and you will need a sweater, or better yet a \u201cRuana\u201d<\/strong>, the traditional Colombian wool poncho seen all around town like it&#8217;s the hottest fashion. <strong>We hung our hats at a wonderful and rustic country house, La Posada de la Monta\u00f1a<\/strong>, where our wonderful hosts Julio and Marta made us feel at home and part of the family.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16882\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16882\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/11\/escape-the-city-in-mongui-boyaca\/img_4756\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16882\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16882\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_4756.jpg\" alt=\"Mongui Colombia\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_4756.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_4756-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16882\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The streets of Mongui<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Visiting Mongu\u00ed is <strong>like stepping back in time and taking it down a notch in the pace of life<\/strong>. The actual town is one of the prettiest of Boyac\u00e1 for its colonial architecture and main plaza with <strong>the stunning Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de Mongui church taking center stage<\/strong>. The religious founding of the town was in 1555, and many buildings are hundreds of years old. <strong>The famous Calicanto bridge in town remains from the 17th century<\/strong> and is constructed out of a curious combination of clay, lime and bull\u2019s blood! Flowers spill over balconies, children play soccer in the square and neighbors chat in doorways. <strong>This place is just a dream and the definition of tranquility<\/strong>. In fact, as we walked into town, we passed the football field that overlooks the mountain panorama and <strong>all we found were a herd of sheep grazing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16883\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16883\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/11\/escape-the-city-in-mongui-boyaca\/img_4772\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16883\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16883\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_4772.jpg\" alt=\"Mongui Colombia\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_4772.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_4772-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16883\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Calicanto Bridge in Mongui<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Mongu\u00ed is also famous for being the main producer of \u201cbalones\u201d or soccer balls!<\/strong> At one time, the town produced 25% of the national demand. You can stop into one of the factories to check out the process and <strong>bring home a freshly sewn up ball as a pretty sweet souvenir.<\/strong> The gastronomic offering consists of typical Boyacense plates like \u201cCocido Boyacense\u201d a platter containing pretty much every vegetable, potato and meat in a giant mountain. <strong>You can also snag a locally fished river trout on many menus<\/strong> and of course it is always a good idea to grab an aguapanela or canelazo (spirited version with aguardiente) to warm up from the chilly mountain air. Wander the cobblestoned streets a bit more and before you know it <strong>you have spent the whole day just soaking up the peaceful air of this enchanting little town.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16884\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16884\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/11\/escape-the-city-in-mongui-boyaca\/img_4758\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16884\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16884\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_4758.jpg\" alt=\"Mongui Colombia\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_4758.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_4758-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16884\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Architecture in Mongui<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">If you are looking to add in a dose of exercise, <strong>there is a great hike up to the cross overlooking the town<\/strong>. An hour hike winding around farms and old crumbling stone structures, wheezing a bit thanks to the high altitude, is <strong>worth every step to reach the panoramic view of the expansive mountains around you!<\/strong> The kind of scenery that makes you want to yodel as if your life depended on it! Ask around for the way to go, since it is not a particularly well-marked route, or if you are lucky, as we were, you might be accompanied by locals, who will <strong>show you the way and regale you with some interesting tales of the surrounding area.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>From Mongu\u00ed you can easily arrange day trips to many of the other local highlights<\/strong> like thermal springs, the grand Laguna Tota and other similarly quaint artisan towns. And the real kicker for Mongu\u00ed is that <strong>it lies just at the base of the P\u00e1ramo de Ocet\u00e1, a high treeless plateau<\/strong>, a climate found only in South America and truly stunning and other-worldly.
