I decided not to sit around sleeping off the inevitable novelty-Sunday-party hangover, but do some research for this blog instead (so professional!), and <strong>enjoy a day at one of Bogota&#8217;s most beautiful tourist attractions; the\u00a0Jos\u00e9 Celestino Mutis Botanical Gardens (Calle 63 # 68-95).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16705\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16705\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/11\/jose-celestino-mutis-botanical-garden-bogota\/054-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16705\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16705\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/054.jpg\" alt=\"Jos\u00e9 Celestino Mutis Botanical Gardens\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/054.jpg 600w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/054-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16705\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The creator of the gardens (clue: it&#8217;s not Jos\u00e9 Celestino Mutis)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Located right next to Parque Simon Bolivar<\/strong>, Bogota&#8217;s premier green space, the gardens are a fantastic resource, and are Colombia&#8217;s largest botanical gardens. They <strong>feature plants from every altitude, region and climate in Colombia<\/strong>; and if you read this blog even a little bit, you&#8217;ll know that that&#8217;s a lot of altitudes, regions and climates (we do tend to go on about that a bit&#8230;hey, it&#8217;s relevant!).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16700\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16700\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/11\/jose-celestino-mutis-botanical-garden-bogota\/attachment\/102\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16700\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16700\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/102.jpg\" alt=\"Jos\u00e9 Celestino Mutis Botanical Gardens\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/102.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/102-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16700\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jos\u00e9 Celestino Mutis Botanical Gardens<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>First of all, let&#8217;s get this out of the way: <strong>who is\u00a0Jos\u00e9 Celestino Mutis, I hear you cry?!<\/strong> Well, I can tell you&#8230;Jos\u00e9 Celestino Mutis was born in Spain in 1732, and in 1783, he headed a Royal Botanical Expedition to the Kingdom of New Granada (including the now-Colombia). They <strong>discovered and described over 6,600 new species of flora<\/strong>, making it one of the 18th centuries&#8217; most important scientific expeditions. He went on to reside in Bogota, where <strong>Alexander von Humboldt visited him in 1801<\/strong>, and where he died, aged 76, in 1808. Mutis is therefore known as <strong>one of the most important scientists in the history of the Americas.<\/strong> Fun fact: as well as this garden, <strong>he has given his name to an airport in Bahia Solano<\/strong> (in the Choco) and a species of orchid (<em>mutisia<\/em>), and <strong>his image appeared on the old Spanish 2,000\u00a0<em>peseta\u00a0<\/em>banknotes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16698\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16698\" style=\"width: 631px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/11\/jose-celestino-mutis-botanical-garden-bogota\/jose_celestino_mutis\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16698\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16698\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Jos\u00e9_Celestino_Mutis.jpg\" alt=\"Jos\u00e9 Celestino Mutis\" width=\"631\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Jos\u00e9_Celestino_Mutis.jpg 631w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Jos\u00e9_Celestino_Mutis-236x300.jpg 236w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 631px) 100vw, 631px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16698\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jos\u00e9 Celestino Mutis himself<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But I digress; <strong>back to the Botanical Gardens!<\/strong> Perfect for a half-day visit on a sunny morning or afternoon<strong> (perhaps combined with Parque Simon Bolivar or Salitre Magico theme park for a full day-out)<\/strong>, they are full to bursting with examples of Colombia&#8217;s stunning flora, both in outdoor and indoor displays. <strong>The garden is largely divided into regions<\/strong>, with the\u00a0<em>paramo\u00a0<\/em>area a personal highlight. Another highlight is the extensive greenhouse network in the center of the gardens; <strong>full of more humid climate plants, including a beautiful rainforest room<\/strong>, complete with Reina Victoria waterlilies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16701\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16701\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/11\/jose-celestino-mutis-botanical-garden-bogota\/attachment\/076\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16701\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16701\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/076.jpg\" alt=\"Jos\u00e9 Celestino Mutis Botanical Gardens\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/076.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/076-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16701\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A resident of the rainforest room<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s not just plants either<\/strong>; I spent a good amount of time observing the <a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/09\/wildlife-in-colombia-where-to-watch-birds-in-bogota\/\" target=\"_blank\">many lovely bird species that call this garden home<\/a>. Bursting, as it is, with exotic flowers and trees, means that <strong>the garden attracts an impressive array of hummingbirds, flowerpiercers and tanagers<\/strong>. Their bright colors and beautiful song gives an added dimension to your surroundings;<strong> it often genuinely feels like you&#8217;ve escaped the city<\/strong> (no mean feat for a city as expansive as Bogota). The only real clue is that the gardens lie on the flyover of the El Dorado airport (although you quickly learn to forget about this).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16702\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16702\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/11\/jose-celestino-mutis-botanical-garden-bogota\/attachment\/089\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16702\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16702\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/089.jpg\" alt=\"Jos\u00e9 Celestino Mutis Botanical Gardens\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/089.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/089-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16702\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The desert section<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With<strong> special events regularly scheduled<\/strong>, such as the orchid exhibition that was going on during my visit (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jbb.gov.co\/jardin\/\" target=\"_blank\">check their website for updates<\/a>), and <strong>an excellent selection of activities for kids, as well as a nice cafe<\/strong>, the gardens are a good addition to any visitor&#8217;s Bogota itinerary. And <strong>at a cost of just 10.000 COP for adults and 7.000 for children<\/strong>, it&#8217;s an inexpensive day-out at that!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16703\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16703\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/11\/jose-celestino-mutis-botanical-garden-bogota\/047-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16703\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16703\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/047.jpg\" alt=\"Jos\u00e9 Celestino Mutis Botanical Gardens\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/047.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/047-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16703\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Special plant market for the holiday<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So, grab your binoculars and best horticultural field-guide and head over. Or, to be fair, you could just grab an ice-cream and have a nice stroll. Both are equally acceptable!
