Let\u00b4s just say<strong> I was quite surprised by a whole bunch of things<\/strong> \u2013 new life, landscapes, the big city of Bogot\u00e1, new friends, neighbors and fellow Colombianos. I love stumbling across the daily learnings about Colombian culture, but<strong> there are certainly a few things that would have been great to know ahead of time:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13784\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13784\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/03\/salsa-in-colombia\/salsa-in-cali-featured-image\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-13784\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13784\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Salsa-in-Cali-Featured-Image.jpg\" alt=\"Salsa Cali\" width=\"800\" height=\"359\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Salsa-in-Cali-Featured-Image.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Salsa-in-Cali-Featured-Image-300x134.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13784\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Learn how to do this!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1)<\/strong> Every, I repeat <strong>EVERY Colombian dances salsa and is great at it!<\/strong> Sure I heard that apparently Cali is famous for it, but I had no idea that it seems to be something in the water everywhere here (or the jugos, or arepas maybe?); it is impressive. Not that I can\u00b4t fumble my way through the steps, but <strong>I definitely would have taken a dance class or two to brush up<\/strong> so that I could join in the fun right away! Not to worry though, if you don\u00b4t have time at home, once you arrive there are <strong>loads of cheap or free classes all over and even more charming Colombians willing to help<\/strong> you out on the dance floor. Oh, and don\u00b4t forget those other lesser known but equally lively dances \u2013 merengue, champeta, cumbia&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16354\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16354\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/10\/5-things-i-wish-i-had-known-before-coming-to-colombia\/10505626_10152919598520921_6200021948720699586_n\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16354\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16354\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10505626_10152919598520921_6200021948720699586_n.jpg\" alt=\"Paramo Colombia\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10505626_10152919598520921_6200021948720699586_n.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10505626_10152919598520921_6200021948720699586_n-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16354\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bring some warm clothes for days like this!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2)<\/strong> Bring <strong>a sweater! And strong sunscreen, and a swimsuit<\/strong>&#8230;really be prepared for all weather. Living in Bogot\u00e1 in particular, I quickly have learned that <strong>Andean nights can get pretty chilly<\/strong> for being a tropical country! I knew the average temperature and scoffed at the several recommendations to bring some wool socks. Well, now that <strong>I have accumulated a bigger collection of sweaters and scarves<\/strong>, I can tell you that I too recommend you take the layers advice seriously. The great thing is that any type of weather you could possible want is just around the corner. <strong>The sun always makes an appearance sometime during the day<\/strong> in the high altitudes and you can find yourself in desert, beach, snow-capped mountains or rainforest with a short and cheap hop on a bus or plane.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3)<\/strong> This is not your high school Spanish class.<strong> In general Colombian Spanish is very clear which is great for beginners<\/strong> and getting around easily. However, when you throw in a mix of the local vocabulary, there can be entire phrases that at the beginning I barely understood. It is pretty easy to learn though because half of the words I didn\u00b4t recognize mean \u201cparty\u201d or \u201cawesome\u201d. I like the priorities here. <strong>Not to mention each region has a distinct accent to constantly keep you on your toes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16355\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16355\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/10\/5-things-i-wish-i-had-known-before-coming-to-colombia\/10704117_10152919597430921_5010086810294506177_n\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16355\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16355\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10704117_10152919597430921_5010086810294506177_n.jpg\" alt=\"Hot Chocolate Cheese Colombia\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10704117_10152919597430921_5010086810294506177_n.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10704117_10152919597430921_5010086810294506177_n-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16355\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Trust me&#8230;it works<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>4)<\/strong> Hot chocolate and cheese are a brilliant combination. And <strong>I mean together, in the same mug.<\/strong> Yup, you heard that right. And I only wish I had known about this wacky mix my entire life! To combat those chilly days in the mountains, you can join in the fun by <strong>ordering a \u201cchocolate completo\u201d from many traditional caf\u00e9s in Bogot\u00e1<\/strong> or the mountainous region. Drop in a few pieces of cheese and let it start to melt in the hot chocolate&#8230;in a minute or two, voil\u00e0! <strong>Delicious and gooey cheese to wash down with your chocolate<\/strong> and the several scrumptious typical breads (no plate is complete here without the carbs!).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16356\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16356\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/10\/5-things-i-wish-i-had-known-before-coming-to-colombia\/10646803_10152919601035921_3593949744199738935_n\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16356\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16356\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10646803_10152919601035921_3593949744199738935_n.jpg\" alt=\"Caribbean Colombia\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10646803_10152919601035921_3593949744199738935_n.jpg 600w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10646803_10152919601035921_3593949744199738935_n-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16356\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">There&#8217;s much more to this country than you might think&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>5)<\/strong> <strong>Colombia is more how it is too often portrayed in the news.<\/strong> To quote the popular Colombian group Choquibtown in their song <i>Somos Pacifico, <\/i>I truly wish I had known more about Colombian history, the people, the landscapes and diversity before coming. Like many,<strong> I really only knew what I had heard in the media and from a few people<\/strong>, but to understand <strong>what makes this place so beautiful, complex and resilient,<\/strong> there is a lot more to know than what\u00b4s on the surface. Bit by bit, I learn from friends and people I meet in each new place I have visited. And clearly<strong> the best way to learn about Colombia is to visit, so \u201cac\u00e1 te esperamos\u201d!<\/strong> But don\u00b4t wait.
