Check out the juxtaposition between traditional architecture and history, with the city&#8217;s new face as a powerhouse of innovation. <strong>Modern history is being created here!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6501\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6501\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/01\/tourist-in-bogota-going-back-to-the-country-of-my-birth-guest-post-by-matthias-scherer\/dscn0289\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6501\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6501\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/DSCN0289-e1359477842538.jpg\" alt=\"The main square in Cartagena\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6501\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The main square in Cartagena<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 9-10 &#8211; Cartagena<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From the green hills of Medellin to the Jewel of the Indies: <strong>Cartagena is a culture-vulture&#8217;s dream<\/strong>, with diverse museums, gorgeous colonial architecture and Caribbean weather all combining into <strong>one of the greatest cities you can visit in South America.<\/strong> Just spend your days wandering the cobbled streets, dipping into museums, and relaxing, and you won&#8217;t go far wrong.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 11-14 &#8211; Santa Marta and surrounding area<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For the final days of your trip, head along the coast to Santa Marta: the city is the <strong>2nd oldest in South America<\/strong>, and is full-to-bursting with museums and history. Also in the surrounding SIerra Nevada de Santa Marta are wonderful opportunities to <strong>get to know the indigenous side of Colombia&#8217;s history<\/strong>, with many companies offering tours into the mountains to learn more about the Kogi indigenous people.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4869\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4869\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2012\/09\/getting-lost-a-four-day-trek-to-la-ciudad-perdida-sierra-nevada\/lost-city-5\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4869\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4869\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Lost-City-5-e1348497559175.jpg\" alt=\"Traditional Kogi houses\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4869\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Traditional Kogi houses<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This route could easily be achieved using <strong>a combination of buses and internal flights<\/strong>, although, be warned, it&#8217;s a hectic fortnight! If you have longer than 2 weeks, then here are some suggestions for <strong>additional trips and activities:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lost City Trek<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This trek definitely requires some extra time as it takes <strong>a minimum of 4 days to complete<\/strong>; but what a rewarding 4 days! Trek through pristine mountain scenery to Colombia&#8217;s great Lost City of the Tayrona people, <strong>hidden deep in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.<\/strong> A chance to wander around the crumbling walls of an ancient civilization deep in the jungle: <strong>all your Indiana Jones fantasies come to life!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13716\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13716\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/03\/the-lost-city\/the-lost-city\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-13716\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13716\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/The-Lost-City.jpg\" alt=\"The Lost City\" width=\"800\" height=\"347\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/The-Lost-City.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/The-Lost-City-300x130.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13716\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Lost City<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Popayan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the far south of the country is Popayan, a beautiful little colonial city<strong> famous for it&#8217;s wonderful architecture and it&#8217;s white walls.<\/strong> This would be a great addition following your visit to San Agustin. It contains a number of beautiful colonial churches and a number of Colombia&#8217;s most distinguished and oldest universities. As well as this, it&#8217;s <strong>a UNESCO World Heritage Site on account of it&#8217;s range of gastronomy.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14397\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14397\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/04\/semana-santa-mompos\/mompos-featured-photo\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14397\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14397\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Mompos-Featured-Photo.png\" alt=\"Mompos Semana Santa\" width=\"800\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Mompos-Featured-Photo.png 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Mompos-Featured-Photo-300x131.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14397\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mompos<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mompos<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nothing I can say about Mompos hasn&#8217;t already been said: it&#8217;s like a time capsule. Wandering around it&#8217;s crumbling old riverfront streets and<strong> exploring houses where Bolivar once stayed<\/strong>, you feel like you&#8217;ve been transported back in time. It&#8217;s a town to get lost in, to allow into your consciousness: a place where <strong>it genuinely feels like you&#8217;ve stepped back in time.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So, there you have it: 2-4 weeks for anyone with a passionate interest in history and culture. Naturally, there are <strong>many more places that could have made this list<\/strong>, but this should give any first-time visitor more than their fair share of enjoyment.
