Of course, every month here is pretty amazing for travel, however, August offers a number of unique chances to experience <strong>a range of Colombian traditions and festivals<\/strong>, as well as some once-in-a-year moments that can&#8217;t be experienced more than, you know, once a year. On a weekend every August (since 1975 incidentally) <strong>thousands of colorful kites dot the blue skies<\/strong> around the cobbled streets of Villa de Leyva, on account of the especially high winds this time of year. It&#8217;s <strong>a delightfully whimsical way to pass a weekend&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>When to go:<\/strong> this year&#8217;s festival takes places on August 16-18th.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1996\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1996\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2011\/12\/photo-essay-2011-our-incredible-year-in-colombia-in-pictures\/tumblr_lptmeufsdm1ql60eyo1_1280-1024x682\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1996\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1996\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/tumblr_lptmeufsdm1ql60eyo1_1280-1024x682-e1343071010117.jpg\" alt=\"One of the flower displays\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1996\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of the flower displays in Medellin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Nothing but Flowers&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Actually, <strong>maybe this one is more colorful<\/strong>&#8230;the Medellin Flower Festival is a yearly tradition in Colombia&#8217;s second city. It&#8217;s not all flowers, although they&#8217;re the main focus of festivities; you can also find parades, horse shows, and a number of artistic contests. <strong>But mainly it&#8217;s all about flowers!<\/strong> The highlight is the annual\u00a0<em>silleteros\u00a0<\/em>parade, when <strong>hundreds of flower arrangers carry huge flower arrangements on their backs<\/strong> through the city, in honor of former slaves who would have had to carry men.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When to go<\/strong>: August 3-12 this year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2197\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2197\" style=\"width: 557px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2012\/01\/colombia-folklore-introducing-esto-es-colombia-cena-show\/cumbia-colombia\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2197\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2197\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Cumbia-Colombia.jpg\" alt=\"Cumbia Colombia\" width=\"557\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Cumbia-Colombia.jpg 557w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Cumbia-Colombia-300x242.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 557px) 100vw, 557px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2197\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Colorful Cumbia costumes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Baila esta cumbia&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>More festivals! This is a special one, however, in that it takes places in <strong>a quiet, untouristy little town on the banks of the Magdalena River<\/strong>. Dating back to 1970, when cumbia master Jose Barros decided to move to El Banco, the festival offers more cumbia that you can shake a (musical) stick at, and, seeing as <strong>cumbia is native to this region of the upper Magdalena<\/strong>, El Banco is a particularly special place to hear it&#8217;s distinctive strains as the greatest river in Colombia passes you by. To make it extra special, our friends at Awake Adventures are running <strong>a special 6-day trip kayaking along the river from Tamalameque to Mompos<\/strong>, with a stop at the festival along the way. If traditional music like cumbia isn&#8217;t your thing, then head to Bogota this August for the <strong>annual guitar-fest that is Rock al Parque<\/strong>. We wrote about this year&#8217;s edition in more detail <a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/07\/bogota-rock-al-parque-lineup\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, but suffice it to says, it&#8217;s a fun weekend of heavy riffing, black-clothing and <strong>good ol&#8217;fashioned rock &#8216;n&#8217; roll&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>When to go<\/strong>: August 16, 17, and 18.
