The theatre, the oldest standing opera house in South America, was built in 1885 by the Italian architect Pietro Cantini, and was opened in 1892, to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Columbus&#8217; &#8216;discovery&#8217; of America. It is a stunning Neoclassical structure and an official National Monument, and will a welcome &#8220;new&#8221; addition to the cultural calender in Bogota, and yet another wonderful place to visit for tourists to Colombia&#8217;s capital.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15651\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15651\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/07\/bogota-teatro-colon-reopens\/1280px-teatro_colon_bogota_01\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-15651\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15651\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/1280px-Teatro_Col\u00f3n_Bogot\u00e1_01.jpg\" alt=\"Teatro Col\u00f3n Bogot\u00e1\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/1280px-Teatro_Col\u00f3n_Bogot\u00e1_01.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/1280px-Teatro_Col\u00f3n_Bogot\u00e1_01-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15651\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A plaque telling the story of Teatro Col\u00f3n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The first performance in the newly opened theatre will take place on Thursday 24th July, and will be a special performance from London Royal Ballet&#8217;s\u00a0Fernando Monta\u00f1o, just for disadvantaged children from COTA (Children of the Andes). The theatre&#8217;s official new season will then begin with 3 performances from\u00a0Monta\u00f1o and members of the Royal Ballet over the following three days: 25, 26, and 27 July.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15652\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15652\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/07\/bogota-teatro-colon-reopens\/colon-interior-escenario-tm\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-15652\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15652\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Colon-interior-escenario-TM.jpg\" alt=\"Teatro Col\u00f3n Bogot\u00e1\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Colon-interior-escenario-TM.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Colon-interior-escenario-TM-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15652\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The stunning interior of the theatre before it closed for restoration<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, the theatre is aiming to diversify and modernize it&#8217;s calender in order to appeal to a broader range of people. There will be special children&#8217;s programmes taking place on Sundays, with Mondays given over to traditional Colombia music. Not only that, but Colombian theatre groups will have use of the stage, as will hip-hop DJs!
