The process was by no means easy; the Wars of Independence continued long after this date, and <strong>Colombia became part of Gran Colombia<\/strong> (including modern-day Venezuela, Panama, and Ecuador) in 1819, but, following its break-up in 1831, Colombia began the process by which it would arrive at its current state, <strong>the Republic of Colombia, in 1886<\/strong>. Museo de la Independencia &#8211; \u00a0Bogot\u00e1<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This museum, located in Bogot\u00e1&#8217;s historic neighborhood of La Candelaria (Cra 7 #11-24) on the edge of the Plaza Bolivar, is where, all those years ago,<strong> Independence was declared in 1810<\/strong>. The museum contains personal items and artifacts connected to the main protagonists of this historic event, as well as <strong>a copy of the Declaration of Independence<\/strong>. Puente de Boyaca<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This bridge in Boyac\u00e1, near Tunja, just a couple of hours outside Bogot\u00e1, is where, <strong>in 1819, after marching his armies across the Andes<\/strong> to catch the Spaniards by surprise, Simon Bolivar, the liberator <strong>won a victory which definitely confirmed Colombia&#8217;s independence from Spain<\/strong>. Mompos<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We mention Mompos a lot on this blog (mainly because it&#8217;s <strong>so beautiful and unique<\/strong>) but it also has a special connection to Latin American independence, as it was here that Bolivar arrived in 1812, and <strong>recruited nearly all the able-bodied men in the town (around 400)<\/strong> who went on to form the basis of the liberator&#8217;s army for his victories in Caracas, which inspired his continued struggle for independence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several statues of Bolivar in the town, and you can <strong>visit houses where he stayed during his time there<\/strong>. Hacienda Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino, Santa Marta<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On your way to Tayrona Park, you pass this beautiful Hacienda, which is over 400 years old. This calm and lovely place is <strong>where the great Simon Bolivar spent his final days<\/strong>, as so wonderfully recounted in Garcia Marquez&#8217;s &#8216;The General in His Labyrinth.&#8217; There is a well-appointed museum, statues and monuments to the liberator, and <strong>Bolivar&#8217;s death bed<\/strong> where, in 1830, Bolivar breathed his last, struck down by tuberculosis at the age of just 47. <strong>A fascinating slice of history to experience in between all the beaches and sunbathing.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"797\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/colombian-independence-day-top-5-places-to-visit-4.jpg\" alt=\"Los Llanos Colombia\" class=\"wp-image-27794\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/colombian-independence-day-top-5-places-to-visit-4.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/colombian-independence-day-top-5-places-to-visit-4-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/colombian-independence-day-top-5-places-to-visit-4-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/colombian-independence-day-top-5-places-to-visit-4-768x765.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption>Horse-riding in Los Llanos<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. Los Llanos<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a slightly more abstract addition to the list, but I believe this region of Colombia deserves a place here: the great plains of Colombia and Venezuela are home to\u00a0<em>llaneros,\u00a0<\/em><strong>essentially Latin American cowboys<\/strong>, and it was these men who made up the bulk of Jose Antonio Paez&#8217;s liberation armies and played a key role in the Battle of Boyac\u00e1. <strong>Famed for their riding skills, and strength, and endurance,<\/strong> the\u00a0<em>llaneros\u00a0<\/em>were essential to the liberation of both Colombia and Venezuela. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A visit to Villavicencio or Yopal can offer a window into\u00a0<em>llanero\u00a0<\/em>culture, which revolves around <strong>cattle, traditional music involving the\u00a0<em>cuatro\u00a0<\/em>guitar, meat (including the capybara), and horse-riding.<\/strong> It&#8217;s a beautiful region to visit, there is amazing wildlife to watch, and it played a vital role in Colombia history to boot.\u00a0<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><br><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/quote-your-trip-to-colombia-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">If you have <strong>any further questions<\/strong> about visiting these places, please get in touch, we&#8217;re always happy to help.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chris<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Colombia celebrated its Independence Day on July 20th, 1810, independence was declared in Santa Fe de Bogot\u00e1.
