Thinking about food and Portugal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently Portuguese <strong>travel and food blogger Nelson Carvalheiro<\/strong> published a post on his award winning blog <a title=\"Nelson Carvalheiro\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nelsoncarvalheiro.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">www.nelsoncarvalheiro.com<\/a>, talking about the chance to win a <strong>16 day food tour of Portugal<\/strong>. Just reading the title made my mouth water, and looking at his amazing food photos made me want to jump on the first flight to Lisbon <strong>to sample these delicacies for myself.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nelson proposes a very interesting question: <strong>how is food your main reason for travelling?<\/strong>\u00a0 So first I had to ask myself : <strong>is food really my main reason to travel?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Well, during the humble origins of this blog several years ago, when our only objectives were t<strong>o promote Colombia, try to change the stereotypical perception of the country, and show the world its real wonders,<\/strong> food wasn\u2019t really a topic we thought about much; but then <strong>eventually, organically, something started to happen.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We started to realize that some <strong>colors and flavors<\/strong> that we took for granted by living in Colombia were quite exotic for many of our readers. Soon, posts about <a title=\"Fruits in Colombia\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/10\/from-the-vault-colombian-fruits-part-2\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>exotic fruits<\/strong><\/a> ( lulo, maracuya, guanabana, borojo), <a title=\"Colombia Street Food\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2011\/12\/colombian-street-food-the-good-the-bad-and-the-strange\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>street food<\/strong> <\/a>in the Colombia&#8217;s highly distinctive cities, and <a title=\"Bizarre Food Colombia\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/01\/top-5-weird-things-we-have-only-seen-in-colombia\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>bizarre combinations<\/strong><\/a> like hot chocolate and cheese started to gain a lot of popularity.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15460\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15460\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/07\/portuguese-food\/food-and-travel-colombia-fruits\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-15460\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15460\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Food-and-travel-colombia-fruits.jpg\" alt=\"Colombian Fruits\" width=\"800\" height=\"598\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Food-and-travel-colombia-fruits.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Food-and-travel-colombia-fruits-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15460\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Can you name this Colombian fruit?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We even have <strong>an ongoing debate<\/strong> about Colombia\u2019s most iconic food, <a title=\"The Arepa Debate\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2012\/02\/arepas-love-them-or-hate-them-the-great-arepa-debate\/\" target=\"_blank\">the arepa<\/a>: some of us hate them, some of us love them, but everybody has an \u00a0&#8211; often very passionate &#8211;\u00a0 opinion and the same was evident with our readers.\u00a0 In my trips throughout the country <strong>I met amazing people<\/strong>: like Spanish chef <a title=\"El Cocinero Viajero\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/10\/colombian-gastronomy-santander-vein-soup-leg-of-beef-and-other-delicatessen\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dani Meronho<\/a>, AKA &#8220;El Cocinero Viajero&#8221; who taught me how <strong>the apparent lack of creativity in Colombian cuisine<\/strong> was in a large part a result of an <strong>old 18th century decree that forbade the use of any ingredient which originated in the conquering nations.<\/strong> Colombia&#8217;s cuisine, therefore, has benefitted <strong>less from the fusion influences<\/strong> which have shaped the food of other countries on the continent.<\/p>\n<p>Food helped me to <strong>understand the history and idiosyncrasies of my adopted country<\/strong>, beyond my initial sense that here we only had \u201cbland\u201d food.\u00a0 In my first year in Colombia I had a very <strong>passionate <a title=\"Arepas en la Guajira\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/02\/la-guajira-chronicles-my-best-colombian-breakfast-by-far-so-far\/\" target=\"_blank\">reconciliation with the arepa<\/a><\/strong><a title=\"Arepas en la Guajira\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/02\/la-guajira-chronicles-my-best-colombian-breakfast-by-far-so-far\/\" target=\"_blank\"> in the remote Guajira region<\/a>, we ate <strong>fat bottomed ants in Bucaramanga<\/strong>, and slowly began understanding the reasons behind the <strong>differences between the regional cuisines<\/strong>: the famous <strong><i>bandeja paisa<\/i> <\/strong>was originally just <strong>a very necessary carb overdose<\/strong> for the hard working coffee workers in Antioquia,\u00a0 whilst the laidback coastal inhabitants naturally preferred to use the <strong>ingredients they had close to hand<\/strong>: \u00a0fish, coconuts and plantain. In the Andean chill of Bogota (known as \u201cthe refrigerator\u201d in the rest of the country) people <i>needed<\/i> to have a variety of <a title=\"Colombian Soups\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2012\/01\/5-delicious-soups-you-should-try-when-you-travel-to-colombia\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>hearty and delicious hot soups<\/strong><\/a> like <i>Ajiaco<\/i>, a delicious mixture of corn, chicken, cream, potatoes and avocado.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15463\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15463\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/07\/portuguese-food\/food-and-travel-arepa-colombia\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-15463\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15463\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Food-and-travel-arepa-colombia.jpg\" alt=\"Arepas food Colombia\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Food-and-travel-arepa-colombia.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Food-and-travel-arepa-colombia-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15463\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Arepas, arepas everywhere!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Through food we rediscover the history and traditions of different regions<\/strong>. And when this blog started to expand; when we left Colombia\u2019s boundaries to explore and show the rest of the world to our readers, <strong>our minds and gustative glands had already been opened.<\/strong> From the juicy and <i>very<\/i> spicy <a title=\"Tortas ahogadas\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/11\/blog-de-viajes-mexico-la-torta-ahogada-la-gorda-y-el-chile-picante-contra-mi\/\" target=\"_blank\"><i>tortas ahogadas<\/i><\/a> in <strong>Guadalajara<\/strong>, to the strange Poe Fish of <strong>Easter Island<\/strong>; from <i>Arroz Chaufa<\/i> in <strong>Lima<\/strong>, which can teach us more about the history of Chinese immigration in Peru than any book, to a <a title=\"Oaxtail stew in Madrid\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/02\/blog-de-viajes-madrid-plaza-mayor\/\" target=\"_blank\">perfectly cooked oxtail stew<\/a> <strong>in Madrid<\/strong> : food is living history, food is culture, food is <strong>the best excuse to gather around strangers and share stories.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15465\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15465\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/07\/portuguese-food\/food-and-travel-mexico-tortas-ahogadas\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-15465\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15465\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Food-and-travel-Mexico-tortas-ahogadas.jpg\" alt=\"Tortas ahogadas gudalajara food MExico\" width=\"800\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Food-and-travel-Mexico-tortas-ahogadas.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Food-and-travel-Mexico-tortas-ahogadas-300x113.jpg 300w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Food-and-travel-Mexico-tortas-ahogadas-662x250.jpg 662w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15465\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A very Guadalajarian (?) torta ahogada<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why\u00a0 &#8211; and I just counted them now- we have <strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">more than 250 posts related to food,<\/strong> a topic as important as a specific destination or an historical anecdote: because f<strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">ood is also all of those things.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When I think of Portugal, a country I have not visited since I was 14, I can almost taste <strong>extra virgin olive oil and fresh tomatoes;<\/strong> I can imagine a plate of <strong>exquisitely cooked codfish<\/strong> and immediately connect that image to the role of that fish in the history of colonization; I imagine <strong>vineyards, blue sea, white beaches and seafood.<\/strong> <strong>And I want to learn<\/strong>: to learn much more about Portugal, <strong>not in front of a screen, but at a table covered in wine and food<\/strong> and surrounded by new friends.
