{"id":14417,"date":"2014-04-15T11:14:18","date_gmt":"2014-04-15T16:14:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/?p=14417"},"modified":"2016-03-31T11:55:09","modified_gmt":"2016-03-31T16:55:09","slug":"san-antero-donkey-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/04\/san-antero-donkey-festival\/","title":{"rendered":"Alternative Colombian Easter: the San Antero Donkey Festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>If the Wanderlust strikes you this Easter week<\/strong>, but you really don&#8217;t feel like long religious processions between churches (beautiful and fascinating&#8230;but it&#8217;s a lot of walking, and we&#8217;re on holiday!), then there&#8217;s at least<strong> one rather alternative Colombian festival<\/strong> that you might be interested in&#8230;I&#8217;m talking, of course, about <strong>the <i>Festival del Burro<\/i>, or Donkey Festival, held yearly during Easter<\/strong>, in the little Caribbean coastal town of San Antero.<\/p>\n<p>Everything about this festival strikes me as unusual: <strong>costumed donkeys<\/strong>&#8230;check; wait, actually that&#8217;s all a festival needs for me to consider it unusual! And this festival has <strong>plenty of fancy-dress donkeys<\/strong>. In fact, it&#8217;s pretty much <strong>the basis of the whole celebration<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14422\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14422\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/04\/alternative-colombian-easter-the-san-antero-donkey-festival\/donkey-pope\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14422\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14422\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Donkey-Pope.jpg\" alt=\"San Antero donkey\" width=\"800\" height=\"608\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Donkey-Pope.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Donkey-Pope-300x228.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14422\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Donkey as the pope&#8230;I think&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Conceived as a sort of<strong> &#8216;thank you&#8217; for the hard-work that donkeys do in helping Colombian farmers<\/strong> every year, the festival sees <strong>a parade of donkeys<\/strong>, all dressed to the nines in a costume of their owner&#8217;s choosing, <strong>usually a Colombian hero or world-famous celebrity.<\/strong> I can&#8217;t help but feel that an extra carrot and a sugar lump would have been thanks enough, but, hey, what do I know, right?! Although<strong> the prospect of seeing a Carlos Valderrama donkey<\/strong> would probably be too good a chance to pass up&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The festival began in the early 20th century<\/strong>, but looked quite different then: originally the only donkey involved was carrying an effigy of Judas Iscariot to be burned as punishment for betraying Jesus. Eventually, people realized that <strong>the whole donkey thing was a lot more fun,<\/strong> and the donkeys took over as the central part of the whole celebration. It&#8217;s not too Easter-y&#8230;but then, neither are eggs, if you think about it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14423\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14423\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/04\/alternative-colombian-easter-the-san-antero-donkey-festival\/donkey-fest\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14423\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14423\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Donkey-Fest.jpg\" alt=\"San Antero donkey fest\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Donkey-Fest.jpg 640w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Donkey-Fest-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14423\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I really don&#8217;t know what to say about this photo&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The donkeys sporting the best costumes are crowned as King and Queen of the festival<\/strong>, and presumably given a week off. The whole thing is also a good excuse for the people of San Antero to enjoy <strong>street parties, live music, delicious food and drink, and a frolic on the town&#8217;s white-sand beaches.<\/strong> Sounds pretty good to me&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Chris<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;
