{"id":14395,"date":"2014-04-14T11:03:14","date_gmt":"2014-04-14T16:03:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/?p=14395"},"modified":"2016-03-31T11:53:56","modified_gmt":"2016-03-31T16:53:56","slug":"semana-santa-mompos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/04\/semana-santa-mompos\/","title":{"rendered":"Semana Santa in Mompos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s Semana Santa!<\/strong> Holy Week is here finally &#8211; it&#8217;s <strong>one of Colombia&#8217;s biggest and most important holidays<\/strong>, and a great chance to travel around the country experiencing traditional Colombian cultural celebrations, of which there are many. <strong>One of the most iconic takes place in the town of Mompos<\/strong>, a See Colombia favourite.<\/p>\n<p>Mompos is <strong>a colonial gem of a town along the banks of the Magdalena River.<\/strong> It moves at its own pace, which could generously be defined as &#8216;pretty slow.&#8217; Once the third most important city in Colombia, changes along the Magdalena relegated it to the status of &#8216;backwater,&#8217; but <strong>its stunning architecture and laid-back charm remained<\/strong>, making it an increasingly popular location for travellers in search of some old-world charm and relaxation. But we&#8217;ve written about Mompos before, and this post is about Easter Week&#8230;<strong>so why Mompos?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11987\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11987\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/11\/magical-realism-in-mompox\/mompox4\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11987\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11987\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Mompox4.jpg\" alt=\"Mompox, the square where some of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's scenes took place\" width=\"800\" height=\"470\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Mompox4.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Mompox4-300x176.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11987\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mompos plays host to some of Colombia&#8217;s most unique Holy Week celebrations<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Simple: <strong>Mompos plays host to some of Colombia&#8217;s most unique and fascinating Easter celebrations.<\/strong> All 7 of the town&#8217;s original colonial churches are involved in the Easter processions, making them <strong>a tour through history<\/strong> as much as anything. Furthermore (this part&#8217;s my favourite),<strong> the Easter processions on Thursday and Good Friday are marched in a pretty unusual fashion<\/strong>: two steps forward and one step back. This curious style gives the procession a more rhythmic sense, making it solemn but particularly Colombian at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>Other interesting details of the celebrations include the procession to the Inmaculada Concepci\u00f3n Church, <strong>where Nazarenos in turquoise robes kick the doors and throw stones to gain entry<\/strong>; the 4am mass at the Santo Domingo Church; and a large procession through the town on Palm Sunday, commemorating Jesus&#8217; entry into Jerusalem. <strong>The whole town is engulfed in the celebration<\/strong>, and traffic empties from the streets (although, <strong>this is Mompos, so the traffic on a normal day is pretty much 2\u00a0 motorbikes and a cyclist!).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14401\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14401\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/04\/semana-santa-mompos\/san-francisco-church-mompos\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14401\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14401\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/San-Francisco-Church-Mompos.jpg\" alt=\"San Francisco Church Mompos\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/San-Francisco-Church-Mompos.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/San-Francisco-Church-Mompos-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14401\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Simon Bolivar was a pretty big Mompos fan too &#8211; here he is in front of the church of San Francisco<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Semana Santa is basically Mompos&#8217; only clear &#8216;high&#8217; season, but it&#8217;s worth braving the crowds for the chance to experience such <strong>an exceptional and traditional celebration<\/strong>: a commemoration of Colombia&#8217;s traditions and its past, set in <strong>one of the country&#8217;s most exciting and upcoming destinations.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Chris<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; It&#8217;s Semana Santa!
