{"id":14135,"date":"2014-03-26T16:17:04","date_gmt":"2014-03-26T21:17:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/?p=14135"},"modified":"2016-03-31T12:19:57","modified_gmt":"2016-03-31T17:19:57","slug":"journey-to-colombia-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/03\/journey-to-colombia-update\/","title":{"rendered":"A Journey to Colombia \u2013 March 2014 Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><em>During the making of my documentary,\u00a0<strong>A Journey to Colombia<\/strong>, I&#8217;ve always tried to update people on the progress of the film.\u00a0\u00a0It has been a long process and in my eyes, I still have a long way to go.\u00a0\u00a0In an effort to inform those that may be seeing this for the first time or to bring you up to speed, I&#8217;ve compiled some of the questions I\u2019m often asked about the film.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is this documentary film about?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was born in the US and both my parents are Colombian.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>The first and last time I was in Colombia, I was two and a half years old and it was 1973.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019ve never been back.\u00a0\u00a0Even though I\u2019ve only been there that one time, I\u2019ve always felt a strong connection to the country.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>My goal is to educate people about the beauty of Colombia and the Colombian people<\/strong> while contradicting Hollywood-stereotypes by displaying the country\u2019s diverse culture, economic advances and the resilience of the people.\u00a0\u00a0I want to give the audience insight into <strong>my search for understanding my identity, family history and Colombian heritage.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The film highlights those themes through stories from various family members, notable Colombians and Colombian Americans spanning back to the 1930\u2019s.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>I believe that our film can help change people\u2019s perspectives about Colombia<\/strong> by presenting this beautiful country &amp; people before a broad, international audience.\u00a0\u00a0While this is a compelling human interest story, the film has the potential to start <strong>a positive, new narrative for Colombia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13007\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13007\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/01\/a-journey-to-colombia-a-documentary\/olympus-digital-camera-5\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-13007\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13007\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/1271AJ2C-2-1.jpg\" alt=\"Luis Eduardo Villamizar\" width=\"560\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/1271AJ2C-2-1.jpg 560w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/1271AJ2C-2-1-240x300.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13007\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Luis Eduardo Villamizar<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Whether that is finding their roots, rediscovering or visiting their country, this is one of those films that can be make people think about their own lives and <strong>what they are doing to preserve their culture and beliefs<\/strong> as well as how they pass that on to the younger generations and their children.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0What parts, cities of Colombia will you show in the film?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll be filming in <strong>Barranquilla, Cartagena, Sincelejo, Tol\u00fa and Bogot\u00e1.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0My family is from la Costa Norte, so we\u2019ll be up there and then in Bogot\u00e1 since it\u2019s the capital.\u00a0\u00a0I tell people that the family story is what drives the film but you\u2019ll see interviews of not only family members but of other people along my journey.\u00a0\u00a0Right now we have <strong>Colombian recording artists Lisandro Meza, Juan Jose Meza and Duey Meza<\/strong>, a Colombian historian, a well-known news media anchor and others speaking about various themes in the film like the economy, travel and tourism and Colombian culture.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are you currently doing \/filming?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Currently I\u2019m preparing for my next road trip in the US.\u00a0\u00a0This May I\u2019ll be traveling back to Miami, the place where I grew up. This will be a special trip as I will be filming an interview session for the documentary with my grandmother.\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019m also trying to schedule other interviews on this trip and will probably shoot some B-roll footage.\u00a0 Besides that I\u2019m writing proposals and applying for film grants and funds to help with the production cost of this project.<strong> In April I will start the process of gaining dual citizenship, US and Colombian.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0I hope to have more details about that here in future articles and discuss that whole process.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14140\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14140\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/03\/journey-to-colombia-update\/colombia_1_luis\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14140\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14140\" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Colombia_1_Luis.jpg\" alt=\"Journey to Colombia\" width=\"800\" height=\"566\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Colombia_1_Luis.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Colombia_1_Luis-300x212.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14140\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An artistic image from a Journey to Colombia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>When and where can I see the documentary?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At this point in time it\u2019s hard to say.\u00a0\u00a0It all depends when I can reschedule our travel and production dates in Colombia.\u00a0\u00a0That is where the main chunk of the story takes place.\u00a0\u00a0After that I can then move into post-production\/editing which will last several months.\u00a0\u00a0Once it is complete, <strong>I\u2019m planning to submit the film or a short version to film festivals here in the states and in Colombia.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0At film festivals is where a project can grow and be picked up for distribution.\u00a0\u00a0Sometime after that it will be available as a download and on DVD.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0A good way to secure a copy right now is through a donation<\/strong> that will go towards helping with production cost.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How can people donate or help with getting this film made?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We did a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo last year to help us with the production cost of the film.\u00a0\u00a0While we didn\u2019t meet our goal amount, we did have a <strong>great increase of growth in awareness and opportunities<\/strong> that came out of that process.<\/p>\n<p>In February of 2013, <strong>our documentary became a fiscally sponsored project<\/strong> through Fractured Atlas. This opportunity is unique for our film since projects fiscally sponsored by Fractured Atlas are able to give donors the incentive of a charitable deduction for income tax purposes, a service individual filmmakers could not otherwise offer.
