One of the most fun expressions of this world-famous diversity is the <strong>myriad of accents<\/strong> you&#8217;ll hear when you come to Colombia. It&#8217;s claimed that the Spanish spoken in Bogota is the <a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2012\/02\/su-merced-is-colombian-spanish-the-best-in-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">best in the world<\/a>. I don&#8217;t know if that actually means anything, but, although we do love the Rolo&#8217;s eccentricities, there are <strong>other Colombian accents<\/strong> we love even more&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Paisa<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11748\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11748\" style=\"width: 412px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/11\/antioquia-week-just-another-colombian-colonial-town\/don-joaquin\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11748\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-11748 \" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Don-Joaquin.jpg\" alt=\"Santa Elena, Antioquia\" width=\"412\" height=\"490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Don-Joaquin.jpg 588w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Don-Joaquin-252x300.jpg 252w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 412px) 100vw, 412px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11748\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Don Joaquin, a silletero (flower farmer) who also happens to have a beautiful, deep paisa accent.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is an accent as distinctive, and, at times, <strong>downright\u00a0<em>nice\u00a0<\/em>as you&#8217;re going to find anywhere<\/strong> in the Spanish speaking world. Although there are a number of variations of this way of speaking, the good citizens of <a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/03\/about-time-medellin-most-innovative-city-of-the-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Medellin <\/a>will be proud (again) to know we rate the often <strong>sing-song manner<\/strong> you&#8217;ll hear in the City of Eternal Spring just beats out the way you&#8217;ll hear it spoken in Manizales or Pereira. You might think that calling everybody\u00a0<em>amor<\/em> (love) <strong>might come across creepy<\/strong>, but it just sounds right coming out of a Paisa&#8217;s mouth. Most of the time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Pastuso<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12915\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12915\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/01\/our-5-favourite-colombian-accents\/pasto-volcano-panoramic\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12915\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-12915 \" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/pasto-volcano-panoramic.jpg\" alt=\"Pasto, an eruption of unique culture\" width=\"560\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/pasto-volcano-panoramic.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/pasto-volcano-panoramic-300x196.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12915\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pasto, an eruption of unique culture<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I may be a bit biased here, but the <strong>peaks and troughs<\/strong> of intonation of the nice folks down <a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/01\/paul-g-in-pasto-the-black-and-white-carnivals-war-of-powder-paint-and-foam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pasto <\/a>way get me every time. You know how every country has a region everybody else makes jokes about? Pasto happens to be the Colombian version. Still, Pastuso culture, as expressed in its Spanish, is so rich that there is a proper <strong>dictionary of unique local words<\/strong> people from Pasto use in everyday life. Somewhat contradictory to this, and in opposition to the Rolo claim of &#8220;good&#8221; Spanish, <strong>Pastuso Spanish is sometimes singled out for its purity<\/strong>. It often sounds really, well,\u00a0<em>cute,\u00a0<\/em>too.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Guajiro<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4121\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4121\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2012\/06\/trip-report-from-la-guajira-hint-it-was-really-really-great\/img_8295\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4121\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4121\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/IMG_8295-e1340215701943.jpg\" alt=\"Cabo de La Vela, La Guajira\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4121\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cabo de La Vela, La Guajira<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The landscape of <a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/09\/the-hidden-wonders-of-la-guajira\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">La Guajira<\/a> is from another world, and so is the variation of the coste\u00f1o accent the people up that way use. The <strong>wayuu culture is a rich and ever-strong way of life<\/strong>, and I don&#8217;t know if I&#8217;m just imagining or not, but it&#8217;s possible that the wayuu language often spoken in this region has influenced the Spanish spoken there as well. There&#8217;s also talk of <strong>influence from the Arab traders<\/strong> of the past. Although the coste\u00f1o accent in general is <strong>notoriously difficult to understand<\/strong>, there is a richness to it in La Guajira that I really appreciate.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>San Andres<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5514\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5514\" style=\"width: 403px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2012\/11\/colombia-retains-ownership-of-san-andres-providencia-and-the-cays-nicaragua-gets-more-water\/644351_409894422403430_1817847773_n\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5514\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-5514  \" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/644351_409894422403430_1817847773_n.jpg\" alt=\"Sun setting in San Andres\" width=\"403\" height=\"268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/644351_409894422403430_1817847773_n.jpg 960w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/644351_409894422403430_1817847773_n-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 403px) 100vw, 403px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5514\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sun setting in San Andres<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>old pirate island<\/strong> of San Andres has a profoundly unique history here in Colombia, so much so that you&#8217;ll find that <strong>English is sometimes spoken natively<\/strong>, along with a unique kind of Creole and English. These languages as spoken by the people from San Andres or Providencia are a taste of Caribbean island paradise.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Boyacense<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9569\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9569\" style=\"width: 476px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/08\/just-another-puente-special-villa-de-leyva-wind-kite-edition\/villa-de-leyva-plaza-night\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9569\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-9569 \" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/villa-de-leyva-plaza-night.jpg\" alt=\"This is the massive plaza in Villa de Leyva, su merced\" width=\"476\" height=\"319\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/villa-de-leyva-plaza-night.jpg 680w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/villa-de-leyva-plaza-night-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 476px) 100vw, 476px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9569\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is the massive plaza in Villa de Leyva, su merced<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I think I like the way people speak in Boyaca, home to <a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/08\/stepping-back-in-time-villa-de-leyva-impressions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Villa de Leyva<\/a>, El Cocuy, and a score of other beautiful locations more for their v<strong>ocabulary and downright friendliness<\/strong> than strictly the accent per se. It&#8217;s said that folk from Bogota used to speak very similarly &#8211; and it&#8217;s true that this can be detected sometimes in the bustling capital, but, to be assured of the <strong>real, very polite, deal,<\/strong> head down the road to Boyaca, where\u00a0<em>su merced\u00a0<\/em>(which roughly translates to &#8220;your worship&#8221;) is heard all the time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Well, that&#8217;s our five. Which ones are we being mean in ignoring here?
