Everyone is either on holiday or with their families, the streets are deserted and there\u2019s nothing for you to do, right? Well, <strong>not in Colombia, people<\/strong>. The party-mad folk in <a title=\"From the Vaults: Travel To Cali \u2013 Top 10 Things To Do In This Hot City\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/08\/from-the-vaults-travel-to-cali-top-10-things-to-do-in-this-hot-city\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cali<\/a> <strong>aren\u2019t going to spend five days sitting around waiting for the New Year<\/strong>. No, siree. From the 25<sup>th<\/sup> until the 30<sup>th<\/sup> of December every year, the city of Cali hosts <a title=\"Barranquilla Carnival and Friends: Colombia\u2019s Top 5 Festivals.\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/02\/barranquilla-carnival-and-friends-colombias-top-5-festivals\/\" target=\"_blank\">one of Colombia\u2019s biggest festivals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Feria de Cali attracts party-goers, salsa-lovers and bull-fighting enthusiasts from all over the country and beyond and is a stunning display of the <strong>city\u2019s insatiable love for dancing<\/strong> and simply confirms its reputation as the <strong>world capital of Salsa<\/strong>. Hips gyrate wildly, while shoulders and legs seemingly move to different beats and the same beat all at once. And that\u2019s just at breakfast.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12904\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12904\" style=\"width: 338px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/01\/feria-de-cali-beating-the-post-christmas-lul\/tolondra\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12904\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-12904 \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Tolondra.jpg\" alt=\"The Topa Tolondra is one of Cali's best and most traditional Salsa clubs\" width=\"338\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Tolondra.jpg 422w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Tolondra-211x300.jpg 211w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 338px) 100vw, 338px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12904\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Topa Tolondra is one of the best, most traditional Salsa clubs you are likely to find anywhere in the world&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As part of the festival, there are numerous live concerts (some of them free, some of them not so free) featuring <strong>Colombian and international artists<\/strong>, with a heavy emphasis on salsa, although you might be <i>lucky <\/i>enough to hear some vallenato and reggaeton. In fact, this year <strong>Marc Anthony and Don Omar were in attendance<\/strong>. <i>Sadly<\/i>, I arrived a day late.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12906\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12906\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/01\/feria-de-cali-beating-the-post-christmas-lul\/img_0373\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12906\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-12906 \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_0373.jpg\" alt=\"Dia del Pacifico, Feria de Cali 2013\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_0373.jpg 600w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_0373-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12906\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I was convinced by my &#8216;friends&#8217; that this would be a good idea&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There are plenty of salsa shows too; the perfect way for motionless foreign hips to have any last ounce of confidence knocked right of them. Sadly, unlike our very own Shakira, <strong>my hips do lie<\/strong>. A lot.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12902\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12902\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/01\/feria-de-cali-beating-the-post-christmas-lul\/img_0355\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12902\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-12902 \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_0355.jpg\" alt=\"The dia del pacifico at the feria de Cali\" width=\"480\" height=\"478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_0355.jpg 600w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_0355-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_0355-300x298.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12902\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One word &#8211; cool<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But, thankfully, it\u2019s not all hip-wiggling and shame. There are plenty of other events to keep the, let\u2019s say, musically-challenged amongst us occupied. Like horses? There\u2019s a horse parade. Like cars? There\u2019s <strong>a classic car parade<\/strong> (seemingly unrelated but who cares? They\u2019re classic cars!). Like the Pacific? Well, there\u2019s a whole day devoted to it, with <strong>Pacific music, food and, yes, arrechon<\/strong> (a bafflingly horrible alcoholic beverage which they claim is an aphrodisiac. I beg to differ). Add to that the art exhibitions, floats, and theatrical works and you have yourself <strong>a truly diverse feria.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12903\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12903\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/01\/feria-de-cali-beating-the-post-christmas-lul\/img_0352\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12903\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-12903 \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_0352.jpg\" alt=\"The dia del pacifico at the feria de Cali\" width=\"480\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_0352.jpg 600w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/IMG_0352-300x252.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12903\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Serving up some traditional Pacific treats<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In addition, there are six daily bullfights which take place at <strong>Cali\u2019s impressive plaza de toros<\/strong>. Clearly, this is a pastime which generates plenty of controversy, with bullfighting being banned in many cities across Colombia, including Bogota. However, putting ethical issues aside, the spectacle was very impressive. The <strong>graceful movement of the matadors<\/strong>, the costumes, the colours and the atmosphere all made for an enjoyable afternoon (if you ignore the brutality of the show). I doubt I will ever visit a bullfight again, though, it\u2019s <strong>certainly not for the faint-hearted.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12905\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12905\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2014\/01\/feria-de-cali-beating-the-post-christmas-lul\/toro\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12905\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-12905 \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/toro.jpg\" alt=\"A bullfight at the plaza de toros in Cali, Feria de Cali 2013\" width=\"480\" height=\"358\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/toro.jpg 600w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/toro-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12905\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gearing up for the spectacle<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And if you need a break from the partying and mind-boggling dances, you can nip out of town to Buga, a <strong>beautiful and traditional Colombian town<\/strong> with more churches than you can shake a stick at. Or, a little further away is <a title=\"Weekend Getaways \u2013 Gotta Get Down to Guatavita, Santa Fe de Antioquia or Calima.\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/02\/weekend-getaways-gotta-get-down-to-guatavita-santa-fe-de-antioquia-or-calima\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lake Calima<\/a>, a perfect place to relax and <strong>recharge your batteries before the next round of dancing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So this year, instead of complaining that there\u2019s nobody to hang out with in your city and instead of freezing your gonads off in a European winter, <strong>head on down to Cali and get your Salsa on<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Azzam<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Featured image by Ben Bowes<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The period between Christmas Day and New Year\u2019s Eve, it\u2019s just plain boring.
