What makes it even better is that it is fairly difficult to get to (you have to fly to La Macarena either from Villavicencio or Bogota) and the best time to visit is between July and December, so <strong>mass tourism has not yet taken hold<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Music, floats, dancing, bright colours and, well, everything you might expect from a massive Colombian party, fill the streets with joy and merriment. <strong>A must-visit for any party-goer or culture-vulture<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>4. With the mountain air providing a welcome respite from the stifling heat of Santa Marta, this is the <strong>ideal place to unwind, walk amongst nature<\/strong>, swim in waterfalls or simply gaze in wonderment at the fantastic sunsets.<\/p>\n<h2>5. Sadly, not as many as those who visit <a title=\"Medellin desde arriba con Daniel Tirado, un paisa aventurero\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/10\/medellin-desde-arriba-con-daniel-tirado-un-paisa-aventurero\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Medellin<\/a> or Cartagena. Yet, as far as Colombia&#8217;s cities go, Cali is right up there. <strong>Warm, open people, a friendly culture<\/strong> and all the salsa clubs you can shake a stick at are just some of the reasons to visit. Add to that some <strong>great museums, a fantastic zoo<\/strong> and nearby attractions such as Buga and <a title=\"D\u00f3nde escaparse los fines de semana en Colombia: Guatavita, Santa Fe de Antioquia o Calima.\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/10\/donde-escaparse-los-fines-de-semana-en-colombia-guatavita-santa-fe-de-antioquia-o-calima\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lake Calima<\/a> and you&#8217;re onto a winner.<\/p>\n<h2>6. Providencia<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3578\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3578\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2012\/04\/top-5-natural-spectacles-in-colombia\/new_1_1192\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3578\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3578\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/New_1_1192-e1346351050304.jpg\" alt=\"Providencia Island, Colombia\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3578\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">No more complaining about traffic jams&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>San Andres&#8217;s little sister, Providencia, is your <strong>stereotypical Colombian Caribbean paradise<\/strong>. You&#8217;ll find golden sands, crystal-clear water and barely a soul in sight. Spend a few days whiling away your time on a perfect beach, sipping some rum and admiring the views but be careful &#8211; <strong>you might find it hard to leave.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>7. Not for the faint-hearted, this snow-capped mountain destination is perfect for anyone into <strong>hiking, fresh air and unique and beautiful landscapes<\/strong>. With most of the park at over 5,000 metres, Cocuy will literally take your breath away.<\/p>\n<h2>8. Las Lajas Sanctuary<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3329\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3329\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2012\/03\/5-landscapes-you-no-one-told-you-that-youd-find-in-colombia\/pasto-church\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3329\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3329\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/pasto-church.jpg\" alt=\"Las Lajas Sanctuary near Ipiales in southern Colombia\" width=\"640\" height=\"446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/pasto-church.jpg 640w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/pasto-church-300x209.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3329\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Santuario de las Lajas<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Even if you&#8217;re not particularly religious, <strong>you&#8217;ll find it hard not to be impressed<\/strong> by the Las Lajas Sanctuary, near the border with Ecuador in southern Colombia. Precariously balanced in a gorge, this church <strong>has been attributed with numerous miracles<\/strong>. Even if you don&#8217;t get your miracle, you&#8217;ll be hard pushed to find a more awe-inspiring church in Colombia.<\/p>\n<h2>9. Isla Gorgona<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5340\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5340\" style=\"width: 399px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2012\/11\/5-preguntas-a-toya-viudes-de-colombia-de-una-el-blog-de-viajes-de-colombia-en-espanol-mas-leido-de-la-red\/colombia-de-una-ballena-see-colombia-travel\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5340\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5340\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Colombia-de-Una-Ballena-See-Colombia-Travel-e1389109668356.jpg\" alt=\"Isla Gorgbna, in the Colombian Pacific, is a great place to go whale-watching\" width=\"399\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5340\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A spectacular photo of a humpback whale by Toya Viudes from Colombia de Una<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This small Pacific island, about 35 km from the Colombian coast, is interesting for a number of reasons. From August to October, visitors can enjoy the <strong>yearly passage of humpback whales<\/strong>, a good enough reason to visit all by itself. However, the island was also used as a <strong>maximum-security prison<\/strong> from 1959 to 1984, with venomous snakes on the interior of the island and patrol sharks ensuring that only one prisoner ever escaped. <strong>The prison is now covered in dense jungle<\/strong>, but small portions of it can still be seen.<\/p>\n<h2>10. Choco<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10869\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10869\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/10\/quibdos-san-pacho-festival-a-tale-of-two-cities\/attachment\/8\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10869\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10869\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/8-e1381430164941.jpg\" alt=\"San Pacho Festival, Quibdo\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10869\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Festival of San Pacho is just one of the many attractions in Choco<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This under-visited and misunderstood region of Colombia is slowly improving its reputation and beginning to attract more visitors. <strong>Impressive thick rainforest<\/strong> dominates the landscape, while raw, savage coastline completes the picture. The Afro-Colombians that live here are extremely friendly and eager to shake off the negative reputation.
