This is without doubt <strong>the best time of the year<\/strong> and as it flies by so quickly people can\u2019t wait to celebrate \u2013 you might sometimes see Christmas adornments mixed in with Halloween decorations.<\/p>\n<p>Families get together, <strong>everyone seems happier than usual\u00a0<\/strong>(a tall task for Colombians), people ask for forgiveness, the past is left behind and Colombians reminisce about all the good moments they\u2019ve been through that year. <strong>It is an entirely festive, but above all family-oriented, atmosphere<\/strong>. One of our Christmas traditions is <i>novenas<\/i>, which take place during the nine days preceding Christmas and which commemorate Jesus\u2019 birth. Every night, friends, neighbours and family take turns at hosting the others.<\/p>\n<p>After the carols and prayers comes the best part of the night \u2013 <strong>indulging in traditional Christmas food<\/strong> which, although delicious, can wreak havoc with your diet. But hey, it\u2019s Christmas and it only comes once a year so the best thing you can do is just enjoy. <strong>You\u2019ll have time for the gym later<\/strong>. Make it your New Year\u2019s resolution.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a list of a few mouth-watering delicacies that will be taking pride of place on Colombian tables over the coming days:<\/p>\n<h2>1. Biscuits<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/12\/7-delicias-culinarias-de-colombia-para-decorar-tu-mesa-en-navidad\/galletas-caravana\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12525\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12525\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/galletas-caravana.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas cookies\" width=\"491\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/galletas-caravana.jpg 491w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/galletas-caravana-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 491px) 100vw, 491px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>They come with various characters, filled with cream, chocolate or vanilla. If you get invited to a <em>novena<\/em>, <strong>it&#8217;s a good idea to take some biscuits along for your host.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>2. Natilla<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/12\/7-delicias-culinarias-de-colombia-para-decorar-tu-mesa-en-navidad\/bunuelo\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12529\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12529\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/bunuelo-e1387289629706.jpg\" alt=\"bunuelo and natilla\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Readily available in supermarkets, you can find easy-to-prepare kits with <strong>a choice of arequipe, coconut or plain flavouring.<\/strong> If you&#8217;ve never tried it, it&#8217;s a bit like <strong>a pudding which you can pimp up<\/strong> with blackberry sauce, raisins or grated panela.<\/p>\n<h2>4.Tamales<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/12\/7-delicias-culinarias-de-colombia-para-decorar-tu-mesa-en-navidad\/tamal\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12531\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12531\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/tamal.jpg\" alt=\"tamal\" width=\"560\" height=\"373\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As I said, <strong>the diet goes out the window<\/strong> during Christmas, although maybe it&#8217;s not the best idea to eat a tamal at midnight, unless you don&#8217;t have plans to sleep that night. But tamales make up part of our varied gastronomy. The<strong> tamales from Tolima are delicious<\/strong> and it&#8217;s hard not to be tempted by one.<\/p>\n<h2>5. Hot Chocolate<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/12\/7-delicias-culinarias-de-colombia-para-decorar-tu-mesa-en-navidad\/chocolate_santafereno\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12534\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12534\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/chocolate_santafereno-e1387291015566.jpg\" alt=\"Hot chocolate\" width=\"268\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>perfect accompaniment to your tamal on a cold Bogota night<\/strong> in December. Whether it&#8217;s for your Christmas dinner or for the next day&#8217;s breakfast, Colombian hot chocolate has got to be on your list.<\/p>\n<h2>6. The ingredients are basic and it is easy to make. You can <strong>add your own personal touch<\/strong> with some cinnamon or raisins. It&#8217;s so famous that it&#8217;s even got a song of it&#8217;s own &#8211; a kind of nursery rhyme that goes something like <strong>&#8220;I want to marry rice pudding&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong>. That old classic.<\/p>\n<h2>7. Canelazo<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/12\/7-delicias-culinarias-de-colombia-para-decorar-tu-mesa-en-navidad\/canelazo\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12536\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12536\" src=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/canelazo-e1387291403978.jpg\" alt=\"canelazo\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Surprise your guests by greeting them with a canelazo, or <strong>warm up these December nights<\/strong> as you wander alongside the Christmas lights. The national dish goes great with capers, corn-on-the-cob, avocado and a dash of sour cream.<\/p>\n<p>Right, all this talk is making me hungry, I hope you&#8217;ve got some cravings after reading this.
