{"id":12108,"date":"2013-11-25T09:32:51","date_gmt":"2013-11-25T14:32:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/?p=12108"},"modified":"2016-03-31T16:36:08","modified_gmt":"2016-03-31T21:36:08","slug":"from-the-vault-what-to-do-around-villa-de-leyva","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/11\/from-the-vault-what-to-do-around-villa-de-leyva\/","title":{"rendered":"From the Vault: What to do around Villa de Leyva"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the words of possibly the <strong>greatest Australian poet of all time<\/strong>, if you ever find yourself in &#8220;a ball of confusion, when nothing is new and there\u00b4s nothing doin\u00b4, step back in time.&#8221; And if ever happen to be lucky enough to find yourself travelling in Colombia, one of your best options if you want to follow renowned poet-philosopher Minogue\u00b4s advice is to<strong> high-step it to the colonial town of Villa de Leyva.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now, I was going to try to squeeze this blog-post into some kind of &#8220;Ultimate Guide to Villa de Leyva&#8221; or &#8220;Top 5&#8221; or something, but, to tell you the truth, I thought today I\u00b4d just leave you with a series of impressions about <strong>the places I love in and around this cobblestoned retreat.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>The Clay House<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9278\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9278\" style=\"width: 624px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/07\/villa-de-leyva-and-its-neighbours-things-to-see-around-villa-de-leyva\/clay-house-villa-de-leyva\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9278\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-9278 \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/clay-house-villa-de-leyva.jpg\" alt=\"Villa de Leyva's Clay House\" width=\"624\" height=\"528\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/clay-house-villa-de-leyva.jpg 780w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/clay-house-villa-de-leyva-300x253.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9278\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">So, they were like, why don\u00b4t we just go eat some hay, make a house out of clay, and then lay by the bay&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>It\u00b4s completely made out of clay!<\/strong> The logistics of firing the stuff alone are mind-boggling. How did they even do it? People were keen on giving me all sorts of explanations, but I\u00b4m going to have to say that it was MAGIC that did it. The idea was, apparently, to simply build a house and live in it (a fairly commonplace idea), but the indigenous owners have turned it into one of the coolest museums around. <strong>There\u00b4s MAGIC in that there house,<\/strong> I tells ya&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3>Pozos Azules<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1659\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1659\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2011\/11\/guest-post-villa-de-leyva-an-extended-guide\/image-five\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1659\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1659 \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Image-five-e1385389617801.jpg\" alt=\"One of the five pozos azules (blue pools) in Villa de Leyva, which can be enjoyed as part of a short circular walk\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1659\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of the five pozos azules (blue pools), which can be enjoyed as part of a short circular walk.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>These natural pools, a short distance from Villa de Leyva are so strikingly aquamarine aquamarine, beautifully limpid and fresh that <strong>you&#8217;d have to be an idiot not to bring your swimming trunks<\/strong>. Well, I was that idiot. Next time, Pozos, next time&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3>Raquira<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9280\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9280\" style=\"width: 624px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/07\/villa-de-leyva-and-its-neighbours-things-to-see-around-villa-de-leyva\/piggy-banks\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9280\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-9280 \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/piggy-banks.jpg\" alt=\"Traditional pottery piggy banks in Raquira\" width=\"624\" height=\"490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/piggy-banks.jpg 780w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/piggy-banks-300x235.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9280\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">They do whatever Spider Piggy Banks do.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The nearby town of <strong>Raquira is a Pottery Paradise<\/strong>. The name Raquira is derived from the Chibcha word meaning &#8220;City of Pots.&#8221; This is something of a happy coincidence, as Raquira has been, from time immemorial, home to the best &#8211; and cheapest &#8211; traditionally-made pottery in Colombia. To be totally honest, not being that much of a shopper, I was bored almost to tears by this place. However, my keen shopper companions went completely bananas on the main street with its <strong>myriad of shops devoted to all things pottery<\/strong>, all at the most outrageously low prices you\u00b4re ever likely to come across. Mugs featuring every Spanish name imaginable, pots, trinkets, and, of course, the main event, the traditional Spider Piggy Bank. There are also other traditional goods on sale, and, what\u00b4s more, an awesome little <a title=\"Shopping in Bogota \u2013 In Search of the Hammock District.\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2012\/12\/shopping-in-bogota-in-search-of-the-hammock-district\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hammock District<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>And&#8230;plenty more!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you get a tour from town, or organise a pick-up from the bus terminal, there are loads of other cool spots around Villa de Leyva for you to explore. Another favourite of mine is the <strong>Convent of Ecce Homo<\/strong>, a sanctuary devoted to silence. Head into its church, and find the drawing of Jesus by the Confessional. If Jesus\u00b4 eyes are open when you look, you are clean. Closed eyes, however, signify the opposite. No prizes for guessing what happened when I looked. Or check out the Ostrich Park. I can&#8217;t quite explain its presence in Villa de Leyva, but<strong> it&#8217;s a park full of ostriches.<\/strong> Say no more. There are also plenty of fossils around the area &#8211; check out the huge marine dinosaur at the Fossil Museum.
