My British skepticism couldn\u2019t grasp the concept, the idea of <strong>magic being present in the mundane, real world<\/strong>, of normal, realistic settings going hand in hand with the extraordinary and unbelievable. Yet at times in Colombia, <strong>Magical Realism seems all too genuine.<\/strong> And nowhere more so than in Mompox.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11987\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11987\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/11\/magical-realism-in-mompox\/mompox4\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11987\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-11987 \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Mompox4.jpg\" alt=\"Mompox, the square where some of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's scenes took place\" width=\"640\" height=\"376\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Mompox4.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Mompox4-300x176.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11987\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The square where, in the film for Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Santiago Nasar was found dead<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The town exudes magic<\/strong>, history and wonderment, stories abounding in every corner, every stone, every street. In fact, Mompox\u2019s history is inextricably linked with Colombia\u2019s past, with many people here claiming that <strong>Colombian independence was achieved in Mompox<\/strong>, rather than Bogot\u00e1. Bolivar himself once said \u201cIf to Caracas I owe my life, then to Mompox I owe my glory\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Yet due to its geography and the fact that the Magdalena River split, <strong>Mompox was left stranded and isolated<\/strong>, an island in the middle of a vast river, giving rise to an incredible<a title=\"The Four Best Colonial Towns for Time Travel in Colombia\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/10\/the-four-best-colonial-towns-for-time-travel-in-colombia\/\" target=\"_blank\"> time-warp town<\/a>, perhaps <strong>Colombia\u2019s last remaining truly colonial outpost<\/strong>. Mompox is completely lost in time and, while this is a phrase that is often used to describe <a title=\"Cucunuba: A Real Colombian Town\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/10\/cucunuba-a-real-colombian-town\/\" target=\"_blank\">Colombian towns<\/a>, it is nothing short of a perfect description of Mompox.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11988\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11988\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/11\/magical-realism-in-mompox\/mompox6\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11988\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-11988 \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Mompox6.jpg\" alt=\"A street in Mompox, Colombia\" width=\"640\" height=\"439\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Mompox6.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Mompox6-300x205.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11988\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A typically quiet Mompox street<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever read any <a title=\"Aracataca: Birthplace of a Colombian legend \u2013 Information and Photos\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2012\/07\/aracataca-birthplace-of-a-colombian-legend-information-and-photos\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gabriel Garcia Marquez<\/a> books, you might be familiar with <strong>the fictional town of Macondo<\/strong> and the Nasar family. Well, step through the streets of Mompox and you will feel and breathe Macondo, wandering the squares and streets that Marquez described, giving you<strong> the surreal feeling that you are actually in one of his books<\/strong>, such is the descriptive power of Colombia\u2019s most famous literary hero. And as for the Nasars, they were real Mompox residents who had to flee to <a title=\"Top 5: Cartagena Magical Realist Stories.\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/05\/top-5-cartagena-magical-realist-stories\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cartagena<\/a> after the townsfolk started to believe what was in Marquez\u2019s books.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11986\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11986\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/11\/magical-realism-in-mompox\/mompox5\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11986\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-11986 \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Mompox5.jpg\" alt=\"Sunset over the Rio Magdalena near Mompox\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Mompox5.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Mompox5-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11986\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The sun sets over the stunning Magdalena River as a solitary fisherman looks for his last catch of the day<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The feeling and character of <strong>Mompox is almost impossible to describe<\/strong>. On the banks of the awe-inspiring <a title=\"The Ruta Mutis \u2013 Jungle jaunts, cultural heritage sites and the Magdalena River\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/01\/the-ruta-mutis-jungle-jaunts-cultural-heritage-sites-and-the-magdalena-river\/\" target=\"_blank\">Magdalena River<\/a> \u2013 take a boat trip and gaze in wonderment at the wildlife and the isolation \u2013 with <strong>history flowing through its very core<\/strong>, locals sitting in the stifling evening heat on their traditional wicker rocking chairs, this is a place that is at the same time unique and (thanks to Marquez\u2019s books) so incredibly familiar.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11990\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11990\" style=\"width: 512px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/11\/magical-realism-in-mompox\/mompox-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11990\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-11990  \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Mompox-2.jpg\" alt=\"Courtyard of Mompox University\" width=\"512\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Mompox-2.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Mompox-2-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11990\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of the oldest universities in Colombia. Not a bad place to study eh?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Head to Mompox if you want to feel history and magic. Learn about <strong>the town\u2019s important role in Colombian independence<\/strong>, visit the cemetery where many famous generals and politicians are buried, <strong>step back in time in one of Colombia\u2019s oldest universities<\/strong> or simply marvel at the soporific and laid-back attitude of one of the <strong>most historically and literarily significant towns in all of Latin America<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11992\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11992\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/11\/magical-realism-in-mompox\/mompox3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11992\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-11992 \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Mompox3.jpg\" alt=\"Mompox cemetery\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Mompox3.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Mompox3-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11992\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mompox&#8217;s cemetery<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It might not be the easiest place to get to, although there are some direct buses\/cars from Cartagena, Santa Marta and Valledupar. Be sure to ask the wise folk at <a href=\"www.seecolombia.travel\" target=\"_blank\">See Colombia Travel<\/a>\u00a0(that&#8217;s us!) for advice.\u00a0However, <strong>the extra travel is definitely worth it<\/strong> to visit Mompox, where <strong>Magical Realism is much more real than magic.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Azzam<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>P.S.
