Don&#8217;t be alarmed, though: if you know me at all by now, you should realise how many scruples I&#8217;m the proud owner of, and would never stoop to such crass, unfair, and reductive tricks. I mean, where&#8217;s the arepa? What I&#8217;d like to say in my charming reductionist way is that a Colombian meal will fill you up. If I don&#8217;t feel like I&#8217;ve <strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">stuffed myself stupid<\/strong>, I don&#8217;t feel like I&#8217;ve really eaten Colombian food.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Ummm&#8230; I don\u00b4t want to make a fuss, but where are the vegetables?<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11889\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11889\" style=\"width: 278px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/11\/food-in-colombia-thoughts-on-the-colombian-diet\/vegetables\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11889\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-11889  \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Vegetables-1024x673.jpg\" alt=\"MISSING: Have you seen this objects?\" width=\"278\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11889\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">MISSING: Have you seen these objects?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Am I alone in thinking that <strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">vegetables often get a pretty raw deal<\/strong> here in Colombia? I mean, I&#8217;m not a tree-hugging hippy or anything, but I feel a little bit funny if there&#8217;s not something green on my plate. I sometimes feel a bit funny here in Colombia. Veggies often seem to be <strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">viewed with skepticism<\/strong> here.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Fruit often makes an appearance in the main dish<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5658\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5658\" style=\"width: 340px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2012\/12\/food-in-colombia-the-plantain\/bigbanana\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5658\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-5658 \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/bigbanana.jpg\" alt=\"Well met, old foe. \" width=\"340\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/bigbanana.jpg 425w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/bigbanana-300x222.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 340px) 100vw, 340px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5658\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Well met, old foe.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As we keep on trying to <a style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/10\/from-the-vault-colombian-fruits-part-1\/\" target=\"_blank\">remind you<\/a>, <strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">fruit is a different thing here in Colombia<\/strong>: if it&#8217;s not a fruit you&#8217;ve never seen before, and that doesn\u00b4t have an English name, it&#8217;s a fruit you thought you knew, but only <strong>100 times more delicious<\/strong> (science, guys). Maybe it&#8217;s not that surprising, then, that they turn up everywhere. Not only are most lunches accompanied by a <strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">super-fresh, super-delicious fruit juice<\/strong>, but fruit can sometimes sneak onto the plate itself, as if to apologise for the dearth of vegetables. The most common perpetrator is my old, worthy foe, <a style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2012\/12\/food-in-colombia-the-plantain\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Plantain<\/a> (and don&#8217;t forget that the avocado is a fruit, too), but you might also find a salad consisting of some perfunctory lettuce, onion, and tomato &#8211; \u00a0with the surprise inclusion of mango, or indeed strawberry. It&#8217;s<strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\"> a unique contrast to the savoury<\/strong> component of your meal, even though it might take a <a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/05\/a-colombia-food-top-5-a-savoury-sweet-symphony\/\" target=\"_blank\">little to get used to<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Lunch is Big<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_107\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-107\" style=\"width: 223px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2011\/03\/my-everest-the-bandeja-paisa\/2752681471_9b8cd54ab6_m\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-107\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-107 \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/2752681471_9b8cd54ab6_m-e1300125448165.jpg\" alt=\"Bandeja Paisa\" width=\"223\" height=\"157\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-107\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Enough said.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This is something that I never noticed before I got here, but it makes a lot of sense.<strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\"> Why should dinner be the biggest meal\u00a0<\/strong>of the day? Why not, as in Colombia, make lunch the star of the show? Not only does this give you more energy for the afternoon; but <strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">not stuffing yourself stupid at night<\/strong> makes the probability of a Dutch Oven Event significantly lower. Having a big lunch: smart.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>There are always exceptions<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10991\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10991\" style=\"width: 336px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/10\/gastronomia-en-colombia-santander-y-su-comida\/mercado-santander-colombia\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10991\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-10991  \" src=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Mercado-Santander-Colombia.jpg\" alt=\"Mercado Bucaramanga\" width=\"336\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Mercado-Santander-Colombia.jpg 800w, https:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Mercado-Santander-Colombia-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 336px) 100vw, 336px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10991\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Santander: An exception all by itself.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I&#8217;ll stick to my guns about the above generalisations, but there are <strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">variations on the above theme<\/strong>. For example; although you&#8217;ll find rice all over Colombia, you&#8217;ll find an amazing coconut-flavoured variety on the coast; where you&#8217;ll also often find the usual meat exchanged for <strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">ridiculously fresh fish<\/strong>. And, in Antioquia, you&#8217;ll generally find a hearty serving of beans augmented to the carbohydrate bomb (another reason to make your evening meal smaller). Then, there&#8217;s the<a style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\" href=\"http:\/\/seecolombia.travel\/blog\/2013\/10\/colombian-gastronomy-santander-vein-soup-leg-of-beef-and-other-delicatessen\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Santander region<\/a>.
